  1. I agree, you are obviously NOT a parent. on GPS Wristwatch for Kids · · Score: 1

This is a great step forwared in child safety, and I have also heard that this is also going to be used for alzheimer patients. The author of this heeds to re-evaluate his statement after he has looked into the innocent eyes of his own children.

  2. Just start a business on Low-end Laptops? · · Score: 1

Why not start your own computer cousulting business? You probably already fix computers anyway. Then you can write it off (it is like getting a 30% discount). You really should just go ahead and buy the laptop you really want-- $1500 will get you a decent machine with a color display, dvd, big hd, etc. Just admit it, you WILL be frusterated with a $200 end laptop. Buy it 12 months same as cash and pay it off! My 2cents...

  3. Try cable and DSL on Telecommuters and Downtime? · · Score: 1

I have been consulting/telecommuting for 6+ years. I have redundant computers, UPS backups and most importantly, a Cable AND a DSL broadband connection. I use a Nexland ISB Pro800turbo DUAL WAN port router. I have yet to have BOTH DSL and cable down at the same time!

  5. Fun with Wap11 on Supercharging Your Linksys Wireless Access Point · · Score: 4, Interesting
Funny, I just worked on boosting my power this weekend before this post. It works like a champ! This info came out earlier this fall but it is nice to see it all written up in such a nice manner. I have a whole bunch of printouts describing all this stuff and I somehow pieced it all togethter. I have a couple of notes of interest pertaining to this stuff:

First, I never did upgrade the firmware to 1.4g5 or 1.4g7, I am running 1.4H3. I guess I should upgrade, but that would require me to actually get the AP next to my PC for the USB connection. The upgrade seems to work OK without the latest rev as long as you can connect via snmp. I think I must have the 1.0 hardware since I got this thing Jan 2001.

Second, I think you can also turn off the SSID on your WAP using these utilities. I have not tried this but perhaps it could help if you are paranoid...

Finally, The main reason I worked on trying to fugure this out is because my wireless network was running very slow. I finally figured out the reason was the wpc11 linksys pcmcia card that I have. If you have one of these cards make sure to DISABLE the PowerSaveMode in your network configuration (in Windows). Your network will now run significantly faster (500K/sec instead of 50K/Sec in my case). Also when exploring in windows use mapped drives instead of unc names. This seems to also help.

    Hope that helps, BRian

  6. Try EE/CS on Fast Track to a CS Degree? · · Score: 1

I would recommend going back to school for a 4 year degree double majoring in EE and CS. For me the EE classes were much more fun then the CS classes. In your CS classes you would have to program the same thing in like four or five languages. Boring. In the EE classes you would design the computer yourself. Whatever you decide, remember not to let your schooling get in the way of your education.

  7. Try both cable and DSL on Dump Broadband, Dig Out Your Modem! · · Score: 2, Interesting

My cable was so unreliable that I now have a cable modem AND DSL, joined together with a neato router from nexland (ISBPro 800 Turbo). I program out of my basement and I cannot afford to be without a reliable connection.
