It's interesting you mention FP. One of the most interesting parts of Higher Order Perl, in my opinion, is the parser generator Dominus builds up. In response to an email about it, Dominus told me he'd adapted it from Structured ML for the Working Programmer.

Yes, but it just as strongly provides a cop-out mechanism with which the patient may absolve herself of her responsibility to recover. Besides, the science of measuring changes in brain and blood chemistry, then these changes for mood swings concurrent with the change, is shaky at best. It will be a long time before humans fully understand neuro- and bio-chemistry and how they relate to the psyche, and until that day I am more than happy to keep my patients in the dark about it.

  14. As a psychologist on Anxiety Disorders Discoverable by Blood Test · · Score: 0, Flamebait

I find this attitude to be the singlemost prevalent misconception in the field today. In my studied opinion it is far better for the chemical/physical causes of mental illness to be hidden safely away from the subject. The patient should understand that their problem stems from within themselves, not from generations of malignant genes. This places the burden and yoke of recovery squarely on their shoulders, where it belongs.

What is so terrible about pointing out the apparent, natural and omnipresent differences about males and females?

(ok, here I go throwing my karma into the fire)

Men excel at physical pursuits. It is not only because our hormones allow greater muscle mass -- there are other forces at work here and science has not yet pinned them down. But a quick look at fighter pilots today, for example, shows that even in a field where physical strength is not essential, men are far more suited to the task than women.

Sure, there are lady fighter pilots, women who can exert the concentration and coordination necessary for Uncle Sam to trust them with $100M toys. Just as there are women who can beat men at Quake III. All I'm saying is that statistics confirm that there are not many of them.

    Is that so bad?
