  1. Should've seen it coming ... on KaZaA Collapses · · Score: 1
... since we've all been using the lite version of the software.

At least we can say we stuck it to the man ... who stuck it to the man!

  2. How far they've fallen (in Toronto) on The Truth Revealed · · Score: 1
You know that XFiles has fallen when Toronto's global affiliate, which shows both Survivor and XFiles, went with the Survivor finale.

If Carter hadn't tried to stretch the show past 5 or 6 seasons, people would probably still care -- making the jump to a Star Trek-like franchise possible. Now, the next XFiles movie will be a nostalgia player like the new Miami Vice movie.

  3. An homage to P.K. Dick? on The Years of Rice and Salt · · Score: 1
KSR did his PhD. thesis on P.K. Dick, and later edited his short stories. Perhaps it's not a total coincidence one of Dick's best books, The Man In The High Castle , is also an alternate history.

    Just a thought.

  4. Suing the USPTO? on Under Attack by PanIP's Patent Lawyers? · · Score: 1
That would only make things worse -- the main problem facing the USPTO is that it is chronically underfunded, leading to its being understaffed, and undersupplied with usable prior art. The USPTO is, however, profitable. Unfortunately, the US government siphons money from them to pay for really useful stuff like missile defense plans and thousand dollar wrenches.

  6. Software licenses, OS, and AMD on Rolling Your Own Business Desktops? · · Score: 1
Check your MS licenses closely. If you have OEM licenses, they probably can't be recycled; OEM software can only be used on the hardware it was bundled with. Upgrading a PC with OEM software enters you into a gray area. The more hardware you change, they grayer things get. I'm not sure at what point MS considers an upgraded PC to be a new PC, but you could get in touch with your in-house and/or MS to find out.

If you really want to save bucks and cut down on licensing headaches, use open source software. If all you need is replacements for Office and Windows, standardizing on Linux and one of the handful of free / cheap office suites will save you a pile of money and a few headaches (no more macro and e-mail viruses, for instance).

AMD is much more cost-effective than Intel. If you do go with Linux desktops, NForce-based boards should be sweet. There are full Linux drivers for all built-in components (sound, IDE, network, video, etc). Otherwise, check out reviews for ECS K7S5A mobos. They're cheap, fast, and reliable. No built-in video, however.

Finally, look around for recent reviews of customer service from Dell and company. With the downturn in PC sales, most PC manufacturers have slashed and burned their support staff to meet earnings expectations. If you know the hardware in all your PCs, it's much easier to do your own hardware support.

  7. Why Katz Hurts My Head on Dog Bites Website · · Score: 1
    Writers who can't hype themselves.

If he's the voice of the next nerd generation, we're all in trouble.

He spends less time editing his writing than Harlan Ellison, and yet needs it more.

He talks about new ways of publishing, yet relies on dead trees and traditional publishers.

He's hyping a book about living with four dogs over a year ... on a news site for nerds. And, apparently, gets paid for it by the site.

He thinks he's the saviour of computer nerds because he can install Linux. Or because he takes kiddies to see the South Park movie.

There isn't a band-wagon he isn't willing to hop on. Unless it interferes with his desire to self-agrandize.

I'd belly up money for a subscription if they'd just can this bozo.

  10. Headaches on What About IPv6? How Long Until Widespread Deployment? · · Score: 1
OS's are easy to upgrade -- or, at least, they should be. But what about all those hardware devices like SOHO broadband routers? Those suckers are everywhere. I remember reading that mine, a NetGear RT 314, couldn't possibly do IPV6.

I can see telcos and corporations using it. For them, the advantages are great. But for consumers? The hassles would seem to outweigh the benefits.

  11. Bogus test on Two Approaches to the Next-Generation Desktop · · Score: 1, Interesting
The test is bogus -- the article itself said that the Intel chips tested won't ship until fall. Fall. That's 7 or 8 months away, minimum. The test pitted unavailable CPU's from Intel against currently shipping AMD CPU's. 8 months is a long time, almost long enough for CPU's to get 50% faster, according to Moore's Law. Almost long enough for AMD to have its Hammer line coming into play.

Keep in mind that, on the day the 2GHz P4's were released, Tom's was running Intel-sponsored P4 ads on its front page. The 2Ghz P4 they overclocked to 3GHz was an engineering sample while their overclocked Athlon XP was retail. They're hardly objective.

  12. Puff piece on Time Canada Shows New iMac · · Score: 1

Ach, to think I read through the article. I expect puffery like this to come from Jon Katz on /. writing about Linux, not a somewhat respectable weekly news rag.

I particularly had to choke down the bile for the "Advantage / Feature" section. Correct me if I'm wrong ... but don't all current desktop OS's come with similar / identical features?

And wasn't the Newton Apple's first consumer electronics device, not, as the author said, the iPod?
