    I still stop buy once in a while. The diary section is always a good place to get tech answers, I've found.

    What you do with your own network is your business, if you're afraid of legal trouble, its your choice. But calling other people idiots for not doing pulling the same restrictions is asinine. Who is going to press charges on the NYC parks dep. for some hack-job? You seem to be saying any anonymous use of the Internet is dangerous, and shouldn't be allowed. Not that offering it opens you up to liability.

    What is the difference between what your suggesting and efforts by the RIAA and others to ban computers with DRM? Lets cripple technology so people can't do bad things.

    In this case, it's even stupider. You're basically saying we should put restrictions on everyone because some people haven't bothered keep up with security patches. As far as spamming goes, well I might agree with an SMTP block, but that has more to do with the fact that SMTP is an obsolete protocol, and there's no real reason to be running a mail server from a park with (I'm assuming) a DHCP address.

    Talk about camablizing TW for the sake of AOL.

    If they really want to redeem make AOL an attractive choice, they should allow broadband AOLers to download TWs Tv shows and old movies and the like.

    Of course they'd rather sit on their ass and wait for things like CDBPTPA or whatever to 'promote' broadband by making computers illegal so people won't steal their crap. Sheesh.

    I do read CNN once in a while though, when people to link to it.

    Itanium chips do Run x86 code, but, they are not optimized for it. They have a new, modern ISA thats supposed to be really good. Hammer on the other hand, is simply a 286->396 style extension to x86.

    Of course, Itanium chips don't really seem to run all that fast, so who knows what's going on :P

    The codebase for the project I'm working on at work is currently about 170,000 lines, big, but certainly not a "huge" project, and it takes nearly ten minutes to rebuild on a P4 2 GHz

    Perhaps you should stop using such a crappy compiler/linker.

    I don't really think you can really quantify coolness in general, but I fail to see how the fact that this thing is cheap makes it all that cool.

    Perhaps if it was going to run simulations of ultra-low temperature physics... get it? haha. I kill me.

    If you're writing a browser, just change the behavior of the popup-blocker from actually stopping popups, to having the window open without displaying it, IE it doesn't show up on the taskbar and can't be seen. It's the same effect as not opening, really.

    Of course, this probably wont work with an add-on popup blocker to IE. It's to bad M$ doesn't have the guts to put a popup blocker in IE.

    I've found a simple way to prevent popups is to put frequently-visited sites (salon, the onion) that do have popup's in the restricted sites list.

    Also these people are crazy. The kinds of people who would actually put this software on their pages probably aren't making pages worth visiting anyway.

    Of course, since slashdot has gone down in quality so much most of the people from long ago are gone (actualy the comments have been getting a little better lately, but the stories are still crappy as hell)
