Well, the fact that he gets oil for free probably has a big effect on the price. I mean, if your local gas station could get crude oil for free, I'm sure prices would be lower.
That said, even buying vegetable oil at the store and brewing it into biodiesel is cheaper then buying petrol-based stuff in the UK, due to high gas taxes which are not applied to cooking oil. But, people who do it are actually arrested, presumably for tax evasion.
I think it's odd that they think it's your God-given right to reverse-engineer your car, but not your XBox.
Because, you fucktard, the DMCA applies to copyright enforcement devices and nothing else. No copyrighted content, no DMCA case.
I'm just so sick of people (particularly on slashdot) bitching about the DMCA, copyright law, trademark law, and just about everything else IP without having any clue what the laws actualy say.
It's really amazing that Bruce can spend so much time sniping, without at least addressing the fact that nuclear power plants and nuclear weapons are different things It's very possible to build nuclear reactors that neither run the risk of causing a nuclear explosion themselves, nor create fissionable material for bombs.
I tired eclipse, but honestly the auto-complete simply didn't work the way I'm used to. Eclipse has great features, but the wonky autocomplete made it a pain to type out code:P.
Never looked at netbeans, though.
Also, sun despises eclipse because it's based (IIRC) on WX windows, rather then Swing. So GUI code produced isn't '100% pure java'. Is that correct, or can you design swing aps with eclipse?
Honestly. Over half of the hits to autopr0n (NSFW) are from people using mozilla these days, only about 30% or so use IE, and that's with over half the visitors using windows. It seems like IE is on the way out, now that other browsers are "just as good" (Or at least have the one feature people really want, popup blocking).
It's really surprising to see, and maybe I don't have a very good sample, but I really don't think people can simply "code for IE" the way they used to.
Well, I think the idea is, they don't want students to simply recycle their old papers without doing any new work. It's not really plagerism (you're not stealing anyone's work), but at the same time it's not really doing the assignment either.
I have to wonder about this; to me red-hat's decision to drop its own distro was monumentally stupid. The reason people knew and used Redhat in the workplace was because they knew about it from using it during the run-up to the Linux Revolution. By dropping their distro, they also lose (IMO) a lot of clout in the industry by no longer being a big player. And even though Fedora Core is no longer called "red-hat" everyone knows where it came from, and the fact that it sucks balls without Redhat's QA pretty much makes people associate FC's languid performance with that of it's creator, Redhat the company.
I mean, imagine if Sun Microsystems gave up on Java. They don't make that much money off of it (they make some money by licensing it for Cell phones and the like), but if they did that, I think a lot of people would write them off as dead. Or if Microsoft gave up on Internet Explorer.
And despite what marketers hoped, as Fedora Core continues to suck, so will people's opinions about Redhat.
Well, if these things can lift a 300lb model of a b52, why can't a couple more carry a 1000+ pound personal aircraft. You could probably have a fully functional (but probably extreemly dangerous) delta-wing aircraft for the price of a luxury car.
I can even see "jetbelt" type devices being made out of such a thing, which would be sweet.
Wow, if B.M. says it, it's probably false. Remember, this is the guy who claimed that Linux (and "Open Sorse" software) would fail.
Although his most amazing prediction was that the internet would never catch on, because it would be too difficult to find pornography. I kid you not. His reasoning was that people would flood the net with discussion of online porn's legality, thus making legitimate porno impossible to find. (I wish I could still find the link, ah well. This was back in the day when the Communications Decency Act was being debated)
Well, anyway I'm proud to do my part to help keep the internet running:P
Victimless crime.. explain to me how something can be a victimless crime, or, if some action really is victimless, why it's a crime.
Let's say two gay men have anal sex. Where's the victim? Yet, untill recently, that was illegal in Texas. Many states have had anti-masterbation laws in the past as well. Where's the victim there?
People just like screwing up other people's lives for the hell of it.
20 years in prison for something that, while annoying, is totaly repariable? That's taking away a quarter of someone's life.
I think 1 year in jail is enough to deter the vast majority of people from doing anything. (certanly anthing thing 'financial') Beyond that, people simply don't think they'll get caught.
What the hell is the point of locking someone up for 20 years for ID-theft, or fraud. It's not like anyone was physicaly harmed. Sentancing needs to be fair, not just to punish people however much you want, just for the hell of it
(and locking most people up for 20 years will probably end up costing more then the value of the crimes they commited).
Even in the grain-rich United States, people can and will starve in huge numbers if the grain can't be moved economically from where it's grown into the cities.
You're out of your mind if you think that will ever happen. (at leat due to high gas prices, anyway).
They hold onto older cars *longer* because the money they'd spend on new ones is being swallowed by the gas pump.
In some cases, (like daily commuters) a monthly car payment + gas on an efficent car may be less then a monthly gas bill for a gas-hog. Imagine driving a suburban 100 miles every day.
Actualy, the "mommybox" you're talking about is the Mini-van. SUV's only became so popular in the last few years, while Average Fuel Economy laws have been in effect for decades. The mini-van, not the SUV, replaced the station wagon. Today's minivans get plenty of gas-milage, and most have more cargo space then SUVs.
Homework: Design a complete ambulance rig, including space for gurney, passenger, all necessary equipment, and oxygen, including communications, to fit inside a Nissan Altima.
Or try doing it in any commercian SUV. Ambulances are made from heavy-duty trucks.
My last dump took "a lot" of energy, that dosn't make shitting a bad idea. Are you saying that it takes more energy to extract an ounce of Uranium then it does to extract a few tons of Oil?
I find that a little hard to belive.
All other sources of energy require some energy to setup, so are you suggesting we simply give up on using energy, or what?
When I was a kid, me and my sister could play nintendo fine, but my mom simply could not. For a lot of people who didn't grow up playing video games, they're imposible.
I like how these kids are quoted talking about GTA3 when they can't be older than 12. Apparently someone has to explain the finer points of the ratings system to these parents.
What finer points? That anonymous bureaucrats know how to raise their children better then they do?
Really? I've never cared for it much. Sure you can waste a few minutes with it but I'd rather read something on The Onion while I'm in the crapper (or whotnot) than play Tetris. (On my phone that is.)
The Onion?, Well, there's no accounting for taste.
Sweet merciful crap! If it wasn't for these games, nobody would have wanted to grow up to be a game designer and create some of the games we see today. Some of those kids' parents need to just slap those brats across the face!
Honestly, I can't think of any reason to "debate" a spammer. These people don't care about anything save their pocketbooks. Whats next, are we going to debate murders and rapists?
As far as I know, the "legitimate" porn industry has a strict ban on SPAM.
Anyway, I'm nominaly in the porn industry (I guess), and while sexualy explicit SPAM dosn't bother me much more then any other kind, I'm happy for any tool that helps me cut down the garbage in my email box.
Why punish those with ability, why reward those who are not talented.
Because the purpose school is to improve. Letting a student coast on their innate skill isn't going to do them any favors either. If they can already write at that level, why even bother taking the class.
surely they won't be punished or rewarded in the same manner in real life.
No, but the smart student is going to be a lot better off if be a lot better off in the long run if they learn to bust their ass rather then coasting on their intelegence.
Also, the less intelegent student is going to be better off learning to bust their ass to produce something, rather then beliving that they can't do anything and not trying.
Treating everyone the same will ultimately let down both the smart and the stupid, and only help the average.

Sportscars are status symbols that get low milage, but you don't see a holier-than-thou attitude about those. Curious.
Most modern sports-cars get pretty good gas millage, A Camero, for example, gets 30+mpg.
