One thing you learn about the press in school is that a good reporter doesn't clearly present what happened, but rather blurs the line just enough to create controversy.
Have you ever taken a journalism class? All the ones I've ever taken have stressed ethics, reporting the truth. While journalists may lie, they are certainly not taught to lie.
Words aren't "owed" by anyone. Even trademarks can enter the common language. And don't even try to claim that these goody-two shoes Unix hackers coined the term. There have no evidence for that other then ESR's paranoid ranting. ESR and his compatriots weren't the only ones using the word.
You do not own the word, understand? It's not your property. You just want it. There's a difference.
If people are going to stop using Microsoft software, they are going to need to have a good reason, not just to make random, shrill, thin-skinned people happy.
The benefits to writing non-MS software is that you don't have to use MS software if you have an alternative. And not only that, I bet most of the open source developers do what they do because they enjoy coding and are excited by their products, not because they hate Microsoft. How much OSS do you do?
Actualy, one of the nice things about the english language is that words can have multiple meanings. I agree that the term "hacker" dosn't really apply to programmers, but generaly the 'benevolent' version applies to someone who plays around with computers a lot. The 'malign' version has always applied to people who break into computer systems.
I swear, trying to call hackers "crackers" so that stupid Unix nerds can have a cool term to apply to themselves is idiotic. Words can have multiple meanings and nuances. The orwelian push to redefine a term (and the entire history of a term) is over. You failed.
The gliders are as efficient as they are stealthy, which has drawn the interest and backing of the U.S. Navy (news - web sites). Potential military applications include mine detection, surveillance and patrol, Navy officials said.
Half the story is about military applications and development.
For one thing, there's a lot of interconnects inside that cement block, so it's not just like exposed pins for all the chips on the other side. For another... how often do chips die? If you can afford a machine with one of those chips, you can probably afford to replace a whole brick.
Anyway, how would the AV company even know if the machine was running the "real" software in your scenario? It wouldn't anymore then the router. The entire concept of checking for AV software is rediculous. They only mentioned "security mesures", they probably consider running Linux or MacOS a security mesure in and of itself like most people do. Only the most deranged person in the world would consider restricting a network to windows machines would be a good way to make it more secure!
By the way, you can get AV software for the mac, and, linux and even OpenBSD . There are exploits and even viruses for Linux.
It sounds like they are just checking to see if the machine is exploitable. All that means is that Linux and Mac users are going to have to keep up with pathces too (and yes, there *are* occasional holse for those systems, just not worms)
Laws Supercede contracts, always. In particular, this law defines part of the relationship between a worker and a company. No contract can change that part of the relationship.
Why the hell would you need "Access to apple documentation, OS source," and actual engineers to write that sort of program? That's ridiculous. It's just a simple HTPT client!
In order to win a court case, apple would need to prove that he either did it on company time, or used actual trade secrets, or that he knew they were working on something similar.
We are talking about a peice of shareware, software that you are asked to 'try before you buy', not open source software. There's a pretty big diffrence here. If the developer had actualy GPL'd his code, apple would have a much bigger problem (especialy PR wise)
The law is the law, and supercedes any contracts. If the law says apple doesn't own this code, then they don't. Besides, this guy didn't try to sell the software back to apple, he tried to sell it to customers directly. How is it 'extortion' to write your own code, on your own time, and sell it to people?
The KMT was able to Change the language to simplify Grammar, and Mao was able to actually simplify the characters as well. Can you imagine if the US government tried to change English spelling? They can't even get us to use the Metric System.
It wouldn't surprise me if the Chinese government really did want a nation-wide standard, and not windows.
The coders at Oracle are good, and they might be able to keep their product much better then Postgres for a while. When they can't, they'll probably look at the DB as comoditized and start trying to sell something else.

Cracker always meant breaking copy protection.
Poor and white? Salty and crunchy?

You lilly-livvered pussies! Why havn't you invaded and unseated bush!? What a shitty neighbor!
/very drunk
That was a FICTIONAL STORY.
All of the fish sold by this company are infertal.
"Species" is really more of a 'soft' term then any strict definition. After all, we use the word for asexually reproducing organisms as well.
This has been known about for quite some time. This is just an article about people bitching about it.

I'm not even sure if MySQL is even capable of running these tests, what with needing transactions and all. Do they have that yet?

Not unless the human mind is capable of running Exponential algorithms in linear time, which it is not.

you I guess didn't hear they stopped doing that, apologized, and refunded everyone who didn't get the lowest price.
