I don't build machines with less than 1GB of RAM anymore. Even though I run Linux. I want anything that wants to cache in my RAM to do it in physical RAM rather than my swap, so as to relieve the stress and wear that puts on a hard drive. I figure dropping the extra (paste price of hard drive here) to reduce the wear on my existing hard drive saves me plenty in data recovery/reinstallation time. Plus it runs faster. As for those of you who have older machines, try a lighter shell. I hear Phoenix works nicely.
And i think its scary as hell that ignorants such as yourself support the censoring of it. so i guess that makes us even. I support the right to be able to download plans for bombs under the second amendment, the right to download information (with or without nudity or sexual content) under the first. between those there isnt really that much to argue about...first and second amendments seem to have anti-censorship stuff down pat. No matter what roundabout ass backwards way they do it, it is still government censorship, and is in my and many others' opinions a violation of our civil rights.
I do not attend a university, but i am at the age of the average student. And if you want to get people to stop supporting my employer, I work at Microsoft *evil grin*
that was perhaps the dumbest, most disjointed fucking thing i have heard in days. The internet is a network. Think of it as a book. You are a librarian and you purchase that book. You put it in your library. Now, someone wants to come in and cut pages from your book. How does this make sense? The internet is in essence a large, dynamic, electronic book. Perhaps not as permanent, and perhaps not as limited in subject as a physical book, but in this context (i.e. browsing the web) the book metaphor works. Having a law requiring the librarian to remove pages from that book before children can see it will not benefit your library or your patrons. Sure, some people may object to material in books. That happens every day. This is no different from such a book. If you don't want your kids to potentially stumble across hot naked coeds, then don't leave them alone in the library to use the internet.
egad, man. what country are you from? There are people who have no other internet access. picking and choosing what speech they can recieve is different from censoring what they say.
that has nothing to do with this thread. This thread has to do with reasons for civilians to want the CIPA to be struck down. IMHO if libraries are censored in any way, that is a violation of my freedoms. If I were to put up a site which was filitered by the government in libraries, the government WOULD in fact be restricting my free speech by stifling my ability to get that information through to people accessing the internet in libraries. Any way you slice it, censorship is still a first amendment violation.
Actually, I do have MP3s on my computer, but all of them are perfectly legal, downloaded from either the artists site or created by myself (one track, and it sucks, so it doesnt get downloaded often from the site it is on)
I download linux ISOs all the time. I don't use P2P filesharing utilities of the KaZaA type at all, I just use the internet for communications, business, and technical needs such as updates to my software (mostly on Gentoo) as well as downloading ISOs of distros I try out on my other boxes. I don't see how any educational facility of merit could possibly want to penalize me for researching my chosen interests.
ah, back to yearning for times when the internet didn't have everyone and his brother on it, despite the slow download speeds if you dont live on a campus...
I don't think that everything that the CIPA is supposed to prevent is a bad thing, I do however think that encroaching on legal grounds on our freedoms does erode the value of the consitiutional rights and freedoms we have. Regardless of intent, each law that restricts the freedom increases the chance that the next piece they want to take out will be successful.
The CIPA is a violation of the first amendment, no question about it. Despite its good intentions, it is only a starting point for things to grow and get bad for everyone.
plus its got the cache to be worthwhile. I find myself presently switching to a dual Pentium Pro because the my 900 MHz Duron has such a small cache that compiling is too bloody slow. These as it said in the article have 1MB of cache. Let's see someone else match that on an inexpensive chip.
I am a gentoo user, and I got a modem router so i could use it (and install it) via modem from my ethernet, and it runs fine. Installation the first time was a pain, but once you have the portage directory populated with what you need, its smooth sailing as long as you save it and use it on your other boxes when you install. I know my laptop wouldnt be running Gentoo without that fact.
All things in moderation, son. Buying a huge house is stupid. Buying a decent, but not huge, house outside of where all the business is is the way to go. I myself own a decent little house out in the country, which has a mortgage payment of half what I would pay to live nearer work, and my commute is hardly worse than my coworkers timewise. Also, property taxes are roughly 1/3 of what they are nearer work...I don't think I am secure at all, but it sure is a wiser investment than an apartment in town.
Earl: joe bob, I think we dun found something. Joe Bob: really? whut is it, Earl? Earl: I think we dun found ourselves a grade-A asshole! Joe Bob: Holy shit, Earl...you're right!
Compare being a full time employee on salary to being a temp they can cut loose whenever they feel like it. Which is more secure? fucker.
Beats me. I was just hoping to have someone tell me some information. I would have called it +1 interesting -2 overrated, myself.

defensively used patents are sure as hell more welcome than offenseively used ones.
I agree with you. I merely said it how i did to avoid getting modded into flamebait hell.

no...i'm saying either sell the magazine with all its pages or dont sell it at all.
That is not the issue. the issue is, provide unfiltered internet, or no internet at all. Your arguement makes no sense whatsoever.
egad, man. what country are you from? There are people who have no other internet access. picking and choosing what speech they can recieve is different from censoring what they say.
indeed. I just fear there are too many precedents set that will damage the potential for such things to be struck down anyhow...

and its second amendment freaks like myself who see other voters such as yourself that are glad to have their guns.

I wouldnt mind playing around with some of these. Also: how is availability here or in china for related hardware and motherboards?

to get semen. it may not command top rates like horse semen or bull semen, but it still sells.
Welcome to the friends list! Alas, I am out of copies of my most recent project. I still have some "making of" DVDs if you hate yourself though

i didnt say it was a horrible job, just that it was overrated in the eyes of those who don't know what its really about.
