GW is all about "Big business". This is just a ploy to make it seem like the government is doing something. The DOJ will do squat. MS has already "integrated" IE, and in Longhorn they are "integrating" Media Player. In addition, they are planning some major non-standards compliant additions to IE that will lock you in to Longhorn. As long as MS continues to be the larget software donator of bribes, I don't see much effort from the government to stop them.
We mainly watch Nick, Discovery, Animal Planet, Science Channel and Food Network. I still have problems with the commercials. A half naked chick to sell perfume? Too much sex in advertisement IMO, though some commercials are far worse then others. While the kids are up it is almost all Nick (Bob the builder, Jay Jay the Jet Plan, Comfy Couch, Noogin, etc).
"Shared" source will never work for MS. It has been around for a while and what has it done for MS? Given them a few press releases is about all. OSS is not about being able to look at code. You can buy a text book for that. OSS is about being able to change the code or the Freedoms that come with the source code. "Shared" source grants no such Freedoms. Basically with "Shared" source you become an unpaid QA or code monkey for MS. Some may ask why it is OK to be an unpaid QA or code monkey for OSS? Because with OSS you get to OWN what you contribute to. You own it as much as the next guy/girl. However, with MS and "Shared" source, you have no rights and get nothing for your efforts.
Not to sound like a parrot, but I agree 100%. This means nothing to 99.9% of MS users or OSS people. You can look (only at certain unimportant parts), and you cannot change it (though you can help and do our QA for us), and you are given no freedoms with it (please sign this really ugly NDA).

Maybe MS is releasing some non-important code in the hopes that some may "trickle" into other products, especially OSS/Linux. Then MS could bring down the hammer and get rid of the "viral infection" once and for all.

Man that sucks. This shows that a monopoly does hinder technological growth. Too bad the USDOJ didn't have the scruples to stand up to MS. It is also too bad that the EU is doing the same.
There is a good way and a bad way to do ads. Google does ads right IMO. Simple and clear text ads. I block pop-ups and flash ads with Firefox. If someone wants to advertise to me, then it has to be on my terms.
Imagine if a new "no change" bit was put on all tv sets so that when a commercial came on that you did not like, you were not able to change the channel? I have two little children and when smut tv ads come on, the channel is changed.
There are too many pr0n and gimmick ads on the net. I don't mind targeted ads, for example, tech ads on/. I don't mind, though I don't care for graphical and/or flash ads and usually block them. Another thing to keep in mind with text based ads are that they are very hard to block, especially if the server grabs the text ad and sends down the HTML, then you cannot block by server such as *servedby.*.
It is not the job of consumers to keep a business or business model afloat. It is the businesses job to make sure they are changing to meet demand. If most of the internet advertising companies stop with the spyware, popups, homepage jacking, etc and switched to plain text or simple HTML, there would be a lot less effort in blocking the ads and probably many more clicks on the ads.
If M$ knew, and has waited 2 years before enforcing them, they've essentially given them up.
You are thinking of a trademark. You can lose a trademark if you don't enforce it. However, a patent you can enforce at anytime or not at all. You can wait until the last year of the patent and then go on a 'huntin' spree. It kind of sucks really.
I wonder if IBM have a few 1,000 patents they could scare MS with. All they need to say is if you use your patents against OSS/Linux, we will use ours against you.
One other thought occured to me. That memo stated that MS could target HP, Intel and other "partners". It must really suck to be an MS "partner". You do what they tell you and you can have some of the extra cash that falls down. Step out of line once and you can be squashed. Maybe that is why Dell is low key with their (small) Linux offerings.
MonoDevelop is based on the code for SharpDevelop. It was started after SharpDevelop so it is not as far along (the GUI builder is not done yet). However, it is very nice and moving along fast. Check it out.
I don't think that is what he is trying to say. For example, say I have 5 Win 2000 servers running IIS/Asp.Net ver x.y.z. Down the road I need to add a new server and Win 2000 server is no longer available only Win 2003 server. Now I have 6 servers with one odd ball. I cannot take advantage of the new features on the newest IIS/Asp.net versions on the Win 2003 server without apps not working on the 5 Win 2000 servers. So I can either upgrade all 5 Win 2000 servers or not take advantage of the newer features on the Win 2003 server that I paid for. With OSS such as Apache, PHP and Tomcat, I don't need to pay to upgrade my server to get the latest features out of the _apps_ I want to run. I can grab the latest Apache, PHP or Tomcat and just install it. My server OS can last years longer then your average MS Winodws server by allowing me to upgrade the _applications_. MS ties or "integrates" their products in for a reason. They want that upgrade money. For example, you cannot get the "latest and greatest" IIS from MS for Win 2000 server, you need to upgrade your freaking OS just to get a new web server!. Talk about tie-in.
He is talking about ASP. Last time I checked ASP had no System.Graphics namespace. ASP.Net does, but not ASP. ASP pretty much sucks and requires you to write or buy code to supplement it. ASP.Net _finally_ has an acceptable framework, though it is still proprietary and will lock you into MS only solutions.
I suggest moving to central Africa or perhaps Haiti
Why the hell would I move there? I live in the USA, not Canada, so I don't have to worry about 50% taxation and I can still make as much money and luck or abilities allow.
$90,000 Canadian is about $68,775.79 US dollars. By the time your done paying all your taxes, not just income, but all of the taxes that you have to pay, you are left with about 50% of your income. $68,775.79 is not a bad income, even in the USA, though after your Canadian taxes, your down to only $34,387.50, which is not much to live on here in the USA, though it may be enough in Canada, I have never been there.
Sure, there are those hidden taxes, such as on gas or liquour, but I think it all balances out. My tax rate is not more than 35%.
We have that here in the USA. We are taxed on our money that is already taxed. When I get my paycheck every week, I get the taxes taken out. Then when I buy gas, I get taxed and have to pay for it with money that was already taxed. If I buy groceries, clothes, entertainment, alcohol, tobacco, you name it, we get taxed again. We get taxed on our cable TV service, phone, electric, gas, etc. so it really is not that much better here, tax wise, in the USA.
So your taxes pay for 4 years at the universities? That is not too bad. College is getting expensive here in America. You can easily spend $10,000 per year for an average college. I have top notch health care, though it cost $160 a week. I pay $60 and my employer pays $100. I personally would not want a public health care where the service is poor. The last think I want when I am sick or in need of immediate medical care is to be treated like a number.
what I've always wondered is how easy is it to have a residence in Canada but work in the US? Make US money but pay taxes and such in Canadian currency.
Then you would proably have to pay taxes here as well. I am not certain of that though. I am orginally from just outside of Philadelphia and if you worked in the city of Philadelphia, you paid a "Philly Tax", even if you did not live in the city. I now live just outside of Orlando and work in Orlando, and the tax situation is much better here. No state tax!
Your cost of living is less, but you are paying 50 fricken percent of all your income to the government. That is just insane to me. How in the world can a government think that they are entitled to 50% of _your_ money? Is Canada the highest taxed nation in the world?
What I *really* want to see is mod_mono with class wrappers for the identical IIS hooks.
What doesn't mod_mono support yet? According to the Mono ASP.NET site:
ASP.NET support is divided in two pieces:
* Web Forms (Web Applications infrastructure).
* Web Services (the SOAP-based rpc system).
Both are fully functional at this point. Publicly available applications such as IBuySpy, nGallery and many others are known to work.
The Web Services stack is being used for commercial applications such as SourceGear's Vault. They even funded the development of our Web Services classes back in 2002. Another example is OpenLink's Virtuoso. People from OpenLink also contributed to Mono/
But when has anyone tried to use one of their patents to make a profit or used one of their patents that took business away from them? The reason they have not sued over patents is because they never needed to. If a big company touched any of MS's patents, then MS and the big company usually work together and swap patents which is always cheaper then litigation.
Do you really think that if I built a company that was selling technology that MS had patents on, that they would just sit back and let me profit?
Yes, C# the language and CLI are both ECMA. However, what are MS.Net developers going to use most? Win.Forms and Asp.Net. Those are the two biggies and guess what? They are not a standard and will never be. This is MS's lock-in. Did you really think MS would make something trully x-platform for all developers to use and potentially take business away from their monopoly? Also, ever hear the term submarine patent? MS could have a patent waiting somewhere to bring Mono down. I personally use Mono and like it, though I think it could be on shaky grounds if it touches any thing that MS has a patent on.
Mono has MonoDevelop which is based on the Open Source SharpDevelop for MS.Net. It is not as far along as MS's VS.Net, but it is going fast and already has:
Class Management
Built-in Help
Code Completion
Project Support
Integrated Debugger
and others
It doesn't yet have a GUI builder, though you can use Glade for that which works OK for now.
No it does not. Anywhere on any devie THAT YOU OWN. I doubt people own an infinte number of devices. There is no reason that I should be allowed to make a copy for a friend. I can give them my copy to keep/borrow, however, I can not make a copy for them and now we both have one. There is no need for DRM. It hasn't stopped anything yet. And this MS Janus crap will really suck. Basically to exercise your fair user rights you will have to use an MS "approved" OS or an MS "approved" device.
