So all those Win98 users got tired of their current, slow, spyware, adware and virus infected computers and went out and bought a new computer. Where is the "extraordinary" in that? Now if MS's _total_ market share was only like 10% or so and they made it grow to 50% in three years, then yes that would be impressive. But to get thier _current_ users to just upgrade? No, there is nothing "extraordinary" there.

OS numbers also depend on what type of sites you are getting stats from . If you look at your typical "Joe User" site then Google's numbers should be correct. If you look at more technical sites, then Google's numbers are not correct.

They cannot reuse GTK/Gnome stuff, since that would add more dependencies to a KDE desktop. Why would a KDE desktop user want Gnome/GTK dependencies? Just as why would a Gnome/GTK desktop user want QT/KDE dependencies? The two toolkits and desktops are very different and use different languages (C and C++) so the hope of reusing GTK/Gnome and QT/KDE is slim to none. They could reuse ideas, but not code. I don't see Sun making Solaris Free (as in speech), just as Java really isn't Free (as in speech). Sun may totally open the source to Solaris, however that is still far from Free. You cannot go out an make your own Java implementation since it would not be "certified", and I see Sun doing the same thing with Solaris.

Also, IMO, Solaris is really only good on Sparc hardware. It just sucks on x86. The stability is not there and most software that is certified on Sparc/Solaris is not certified on x86/Solaris. Solaris's tool chain is also very, very old and crusty compared to Linux or FreeBSD. If I need some _really_ big iron, then Sparc/Solaris has always been a good choice, however for anything else, Linux/FreeBSD is just better (tm).

So basically this will be a free (as in beer) Solaris that really only runs well on expensive, proprietary hardware. So how is this any different from today? Solaris Sparc is free as in beer already. Will Sun allow a large community to contribute to Solaris? They don't with Java.

I personally think Sun should take all of their Solaris knowlege and put that into Linux. It would really lower their development costs since Sun would not have to hanlde the entire OS. They can just tweak Linux to make sure it runs great on their sparc hardware. With lower development costs, they could lower costs of their hardware and take back a good portion of the mid-range server market and even the low-end server market.

An open source voting application would literally draw thousands (including myself) of developers interested in looking at the code. The final code would be a version that ran through the "guantlet" and passed. You wouldn't put out just any-ole-code. That would be silly and _would_ defeat the purpose of open source and would make it easier for a crimianl to under-hand the system.
