If he said some Chinese car salesman was trying to blackmail him....would that change the fact that he is a car salesman or would I have to say "criminal". Some would argue that some car salesman are criminals too, but the use of the word just sounds ridiculous.
I want to protect the word 'hacker' from exclusive association with the world of crime as the next guy but it sounds to me like some 'hacker' tried to blackmail him.
I used to work my way through school by pulling ethernet wire through celings and rafters of the dirtiest places. Once I used trig to help be figure out the shortest route for the cable.. impressed my co-worker in the process, and stayed a little cleaner in the process. That's far from an engineering job.
I am currently working at large university library, things to consider if you go to a thin client is possibly giving the users of your thin client system the ability to save information to floppy disk.
All of our public computers are based on Windows 2000 but there is talk now about testing Linux as a public terminal. Currently the biggest problem with our Windows based public terminals is the constant fight against spyware/adware/popups.
I would highly suggest testing a linux based system based on: the cost of licensing ($0), the availablity of the machines, the reduced risk of spyware and keyloggers.
Be careful about doing this on modern power supplies, some power supplies can be damaged if there is no load(something drawing power), or not enough of a load on the supply.
I used to work at Radio Shack, they claim to own pretty much anything that comes out of your brain while you work there AND for one year afterwards according, including but not limited to anything that you make using radio shack parts
There are certain network that offend me the most...
CNN for reducing their video to about 1/3 of the screen.
TLC for occasionaly playing animated 'advertisments' for other shows (example Junk Yard Wars where they will play an animated graphic with the a very annoying sound of a car crash)
FOX for advertising other shows during the start of a show
TNN for cutting off the bottom section of screen to show TNN and the name of the show and sometimes the event, for example: Star Trek Marathon: A five-day mission) --during the whole show

my favorite backdoors are not those that are obvious, but those that could be passed for a simple programming error... buffer overflow..etc
