I never understand why companies would discourage university students reverse engineering and learning about there product. If anything, Sony should make technical documents more public so that people could learn more about there systems and be more inclined to program on Sony's platform than a competitors.

  3. Re: UN and one world government. on Internet Tax Ban Extended · · Score: 1

The United States should completely get out of the UN. We should not have to pay any money to any other outside organization. The United States is a SOVERIEGN NATION. We don't owe money to anyone. I'm sick of hearing this repeated socialist/communist nonsense. It is not our responsibility to take care of the rest of the world. Each country should be able to solve its own problems they create.

  4. packaging materials on How Not To Ship Computers · · Score: 1

If you shipped that computer using only bubble wrap and an old worn box that isn't very likely to protect the computer at all. The original formed foam material and box should be used instead. Also, I believe that any packaging needs to be able to withstand a 1 meter drop without breaking.

Some companies go a little too far with packaging though. One time a company sent me a very large box that contained ONE 7 foot network cable.

Megacorporations? That just sounds like another redundant socialist remark. Who said that bandwidth/music/internet/software should be free? I know that I won't be writing software for a living for free.

  6. Re:what about the screens?? on NVidia NV17M Mobile GPU Preview · · Score: 1

That's true. I think most LCD's are set to 60Hz and you can not change that setting. The LCD's themselves probably don't refresh as fast as the signal going into them. Most LCD's also have a low contrast ratio which means that games with a dark setting (like quake) don't look very good.

  7. Finally... on NVidia NV17M Mobile GPU Preview · · Score: 1

I've been waiting forever for a company to come out with notebook video chipset that could actually play games at a decent performance level. This new chipset is probably faster than my TNT2 in my desktop machine. My Toshiba laptop came with some sort of pathetic 2Mb 3D acceleration that actually ran magnitudes slower than the software rendering mode. I'm curious how exactly the chipset will affect power consumption. Does this chip require a fan or some other non passive cooling?

  8. Re:Oh, to be cheap and unemployed! on ATA133 Controllers Have Arrived · · Score: 1

I'm employed, but I actually had to UNINSTALL software of all things so that I had more hard drive space (I took one drive out of my Windows machine to install Linux on it). My theory was that I could just continually buy new drives, but I simply didn't have any money to make the next upgrade. I'll get by until 2003 to upgrade again. By then I should be able to get a 300Gb drive.

  9. Home much time. on AMD Athlon XP 2000+ Review 6 Weeks Before Release · · Score: 1

Actually, it would take much longer than an hour to do that. You would have to drive to one or more stores to find the necessary items (super glue, silver stuff) and spend your hard earned cash on those items. After following all of those steps your CPU might just be destroyed if you make a mistake. If it does work, you are only looking at a 2%-5% increase in performance. This isn't a very realistic modification.

  10. Why overclock? on AMD Athlon XP 2000+ Review 6 Weeks Before Release · · Score: 1

I read the article and found it interesting, but I fail to see why most people would want to spend the time and effort to do this. Why not just wait a few months for the next generation of CPU's to come out?

Also, how reliable would this overclocked CPU be after a few months? What if the superglue or L1 contacts overheat and breaks a connection?

  11. Marketing on AMD Athlon XP 2000+ Review 6 Weeks Before Release · · Score: 1

The name has to do with marketing. Right now AMD is trying to market its CPU as more of a main stream product. By labeling it XP I assume their goal is to make the CPU seem like it was designed for Windows XP. As scary as this may sound, consumers might be more inclined to by computers with this CPU because of its name.

I think there numbering system though is a bit subjective. Consumers probably won't understand what 1600+ really means.
