I'm not sure what you are really trying to accomplish, but have you tried
SIMBL, who allows patching an application? (See here for an example of how to patch Safari (use the source)) There is also classdump if you want to override classes. And the author of saft used these tools to patch Safari too. If you are longing for it so much as you say why shouldn't it be possible to do the same thing with iSync?
complete lack of adware and spyware on the Mac OS platform.
Not true. Truth is the people using MacOS know very little about their spyware/home-phoning applications. The situation might not be as bad (intrusive, abusing, whatever) as with windows, but that does not mean they do not exist.
Stuffit Expander from Aladdin Systems comes to mind. MS Office too. Photoshop.
Install Little Snitch and have a look for yourself.
OK, I was going to mod you down, but I'd rather comment:
You obviously didn't RTFA, because the Author proposes
"Typically, the installation program determines the level of performance and configures in-game options accordingly. Gamers can then choose to alter those choices at the expense of performance or quality." here, then continues to elaborate this scenario.
Is it really the virus?

I think it's just some sort of slashdotting, all the linux geeks running traceroute, ping and whatnot, having invited all their friends to their house wanting to watch as it happens - "hey is sco coming down?" "not yet, lets check if I can still download sco linux":-)
I find the article dangerously misleading, saying things like "The MyDoom.B variant, which is also programmed to attack SCO". This reporter guy totally ignores that it can be very well smokescreen tactics used by spammers to discredit the spam-fighting Free Software-Community. Instead he writes like a SCO marketing drone.
.. to "how to join orkut".
I agree the wording now is a little to equal to the vocabulary of these shady figures standing in front of questionable etablissements everybody surely heard friends of one's friends friends talk about;-)
The EU didn't go into the former Yugoslavia until the US went in
The EU and the US went in together. The US sent 25.000 of the 60.000 Ground troops, because they had "vital interests" in this area (the official ones are mentioned here)
There were already UN Troops there before KFOR (the US and EU Ground Troops) got there, who watched helplessly as the US tried to first "solve the problem" by throwing more weapons into the already complex situation, disgruntling their european underlin... ahem: allies.
Apart from this rather off-topic post, I'm not sure about galileo beeing a good idea, since I do not see civil/commercial applications that can't be done with gps, justifying this expense, but maybe I'm wrong.
But according to Tog this principle has been patented by apple like ten years ago: Tog has been touting the "Piles" concept ever since.
Before wasting you time you may want to read a book or two.
Interestingly, they say that this feature is only available on the server edition. Can anyone confirm or disprove this?
"Panther Server's Disk Utility..." - you already answered your own question;-) Panther Servers disk utility gives you that option in the graphical interface, whereas panther' disk utility doesn't. it is available on both, but on regular 10.3 you need to enable it via command line tools as your parent poster pointed out. (or make Disk Utility believe it runs on pather server)
Hey guys, this is Windows. Use the freakin' Windows standard interfaces already.
Of course one could argue the other way round, that an application should always feel the same on any platform.;-)
I start playing something in a list, then go elsewhere in the interface to edit tags or something, and when that song stops, the damn thing stops playing because I'm no longer on the playlist that I was on when I started playing.
This is obviously a bug, iTunes on MacOS does not do that. expect that to be fixed soon.
I was going to moderate you up, but decided to reply instead. (somebody else please do it)
I agree with you that the Pen+Paper Method is clearly the best one when it comes to tamper resistant elections.
The problem with people voting multiple times can be eliminated by having to present an ID. It helps further if there exists some kind of required place of residence registration, so there's one and only one place where you can cast your vote. (I don't know how feasible this is in big countrys like Australia and the US though.)
Further on, I think a broader involvement of people in the democratic process strengthens the ties between them and their democratic system.
Putting almost always intransparent machines between you and the elected outcome, with no person supervising the correctness of the votecast (vote for gore, get registered as a vote for gore) and almost no proof (what makes you think the paper printouts are correct?) gives me the creeps.
there has been a patch for this on Windows Update since July 16.
This is a very specific patch, that does not fix all of the RPC implementations vulnerabilities.
To be on the safe side until MS gets off their lazy ass and does a REAL patch, block UDP- and TCP-Ports 135 to 139 and I'm not sure but I read ports 445 (Microsoft-DS) and 593 (HTTP RPC Ep Map) should be blocked too by your firewall.
The test of a first rate intelligence is the ability
to hold two opposed ideas in the mind at once
and still retain the ability to function.
Apart from that, the picture of that WoZ-mark looks far bigger than these other evil 1mm RFID tags and are therefore far easier to detect. (so less likely to be used to invade your privacy)
That's quite an interesting theory. But people tend to forget this is just a theory and right now, it's standing on shaky legs. Lets take a look.
"Cosmic rays [...] increase the number of charged particles in our atmosphere. There is some evidence that these may encourage low-level clouds to form, which cool the Earth."
First they take an unproven theory, that high-charged particles create low-level clouds, then they put another theory on top of it, that the fluctuations in high-charged particle concentrations, and the (unproven) low-level clouding, and that ALWAYS results in climatic cooling.
To construct this theory three techniques were used: "temperature, as inferred from ancient sediment records, carbon dioxide, as inferred from fossilized sea shells and cosmic rays, as inferred from meteorites."
"All three techniques are open to interpretation. Plus, geologists consider one of the 'cool' periods in the mathematical reconstruction to be a warm period, Olsen points out."
Cosmic rays resulting in a cloudier earth would be a far more appropriate Tag-line for the Article - since the mathematical model of temperature is at least in one part highly doubtful. Ah yeah and I won't even comment on the lurid slashdot headline which inspired all the trolls here.
Even if some of the global warming taking place today can be blamed on cosmic rays (or better the absence of them), so what? Should we just close our eyes, telling ourselves "hey its fate. its cosmic. I am just a puny earthling and I can do nothing about it." and lay waste to our planet with a clean conscience? hell, why not blame Canada?
Yes we do live in a complex environment. Blaming just one parameter for the fucked up outcome, although it probably didn't change much in the last billion years or so and not taking into account the new parameters (read: human influence) sounds pretty stupid to me.
So yes, I do think these theories are pretty interesting, the more of the process we understand the better, but they shouldn't be used as an excuse to act stupid or ruthless.
This will be the same thing. My RFID tags will reply, but so will my device, giving millions of numbers back. Good luck figuring out which RFID tags are really on me.
Problem with that:
RFID tags are only "usefull", if the store you walk in collects your ID, then sends it to a central server, so they can profile your habits. if your clothes still emit id's, the computer just thinks you walk around within a mob of millions of other people. (all you can hope for is a buffer overflow:)
k, I'm loosing the moderator points I already spend on this thread but what the heck-
You said: Altivec is nice, for what it is meant for (mainly media type calculations, signal processing, etc.) But scientists will prefer SSE2.
Well I was under the impression, that if I need double-precision floating point arithmetic I use the FPU (which is quite fast with the G5 as you can see in Fig. 1 of the Article).
Concerning fast vector operations - some problems can be "dumbed down" to take advantage of the faster single precision units and lastly you can do an additional Newton-Raphson refinement step where double precision is needed.
Your claim "scientists will prefer SSE2" was proven wrong by the article, where the Jet3D test suite was only ported to take advantage of the Altivec SIMD unit, not the SSE2 SIMD unit - unless of course you argue that NASA engineers are not scientists;-)
IMHO real scientists use whatever they think is best suited to solve their specific problem.
just IMHO the cdrecord-prdvd tools suck - read, for exampl. this readme - they suck because they are essentially not really free. this thingee seems to be a step in the right direction, although one still needs the cdrtools according to this faq.
*sigh* so many jabber clients - so many implementations. It seems as if noone developing a jabber client actually cared to look into the official proposals.
So, if you are a jabber client developer or intend to become one, see
this article for a proposed handling of Open PGP -type encryption.
This discussions seems to be more or less wrapped up and writing your Congressman and / or voting different seem to be good options. So all that's left for me is to throw in some comment.
Everytime I read about Big 'Cons heavily influencing laws that undermine basic human rights and invalidating democratic structures, in order to grow bigger and bigger, I only wait for the awakening of magic in 2012.
It's as if everyone in power in this world read the shadowrun books and thought "wow, thats a great world to live in".
The US needs to reform their electoral and governmental system fast or they'll be run down the drain by all these corporate whores.
That's what bothers me most with the eff and aclu: they just take the conservative approach of "everything has to stay the way it is" instead of calling attention to the things that IMHO need serious fixin.
If you look at the eff's site, the news section is just full of battles in jurisdiction but on the legislation side of things, it's just "state has passed this, congress has passed that".
Where is the support for a legislative proposal that actually strengthens consumer/citizen/human rights?
Where is the proposal for a system that allows for more than two parties to gain power?
Where is the continous lobbying effort to keep the politicians in line with common sense?

I see a lot of papers and "demos near the european parliament" on ffii.org , but what pressure has been unleashed directly onto the members of the european parliament?
What did we do that affected the real world?
Did Mr. Perens send a fax to all the members of the EU parliament stating in short terms (mind you they are quite busy) "mr. taylor is NOT a representative of OSS community - disregard Open Source Community approval for software patents" then run down a number of obvious reasons why software patents are bad. eg:
- they impose a too high "market entry fee" on newcomers
- that hurts small and medium businesses big time by giving big guys to much leverage to crush them.
I have to disagree with you. It's a very good time to be an activist because there is so much to do. That enables you to pick the fights you have the most interest in, thus making the struggels more likely to be even more successful.
You simply make an economic, rational descision. South America, or whereever it is we as an industrial nation plan to steal water from, is probably too far away, as are the politicians in Washington (both geographically and in state of mind).
Pick the things that need to be addressed right before your nose - I do not know the reason for smog in Vermont, but the least thing you can do is contact your local activists and organize to pressure local politicians to change the things that go wrong.
A good place to start may be the indymedia site to find local groups.
Stop whining, keep you head down and DO something.
Believe me, watching CNN only makes you depressive. Cheer up. As Ghandi once said:"Whatever you do is insignificant, but it's very important that you do it."

Maybe you would like to give Ragtime Solo, the free version of Ragtime a try.
It needs a little getting used to (because its roots seem to be some kind of layout software), but it's quite powerful (and free as in beer).
On the other hand KOffice looks really interesting, thanks for the tip.

The term "Voting Machine" has a bad taste to me, it almost sounds like the machine is voting instead of me, rather than just counting my vote.
Happy patching.
Apart from that, the picture of that WoZ-mark looks far bigger than these other evil 1mm RFID tags and are therefore far easier to detect. (so less likely to be used to invade your privacy)
But yeah it's rather choppy on slower computers (mine happens to be one too), so I think this is just a frindly hint from valve to upgrade ;-)
