Surely there must be more reasoning behind the "(PGP Freeware is not an option, since it's tied into the Network Associates product)." qoute.
I have actually just installed PGP 7 Freeware on my NT4/Win2000 box, and was a bit worried when I saw that qoute.. I want PGP 7 Freeware to be secure. Is it not so?
"If there is not commercialization there, a company can only exist based on ancillary manufacturing or services. If commercialization was cut down, investors would not support research and development in the IT sector, less projects would be developed, less taxes paid and the government would have less money to run universities, and all the other things that governments do," said Mundie.
IMO its more like this: "If there is not commercialization there, our company will cease to exist.", because MS cant squash Linux otherwise.
So far their only answer is their marketing bs which is slowly starting to become as transperent as a lightly tinted window for most joe bloggs.
Blue is a colder color than red, therefor blue lasers can be overclocked more than red lasers.
Today is Monday, and right now its 01:40, so you might want to go get your self a generous bowl of coffee and do something more constructive than this:)
Im all for debian and making good use of old pc's:)
I have made a couple of both literate non pc literate people smile by installing debian into their old abandoned boxes and setting them up as 56k gateway and as small fileserver for their home or small buisiness network.
I hope debian runs on alpha as well as it does on i386:)
fits inside my old 386 with 8mb of ram, and performs a usefull task ( dialup masqing gateway ), and it does so with a smile and a cherry on top of its 7.5 bogomips:)
And with your rant over with, If the problem persists, please contact your system Administrator.
I have never used Unix, but on my 386 gateway and my new p100 box, potato runs super sweet as. Stable. The only problems I have had are problems I cause, thru miss configuration, or power cuts as you mentioned.
No loss of data for me, In fact, when I was trying to get my 386 running debian ( which involved a lot of swapping the hdd from one box to another ), I even ripped the massive 200 mb hdd's cable out while it potato was booting, and it came up with an amusing error message ( written by a 14 year old with too much time, of course )... curious, I plugged the cable back in, and not only did it continue booting as if it was normal for me to rip ide cables out while booting, the drive had no data loss at all, that I was aware of:)
And as for cost effective? Well... I got both my 386 AND potato, for FREE.:) My p100 cost $100 NZ, which is prolly steep.
I use my p100 for doing more intensive tasks, such as compiling bits and pieces... for example currently im working on a part of proftpd so that on my p100 ( internal ), proftpd on each fork_server() the proper external ip address of my 386 gateway is read in and sent out with the PASV command. I notice gcc and g++ compile a lot faster and often give more informative compile error messages than MSVC, which, is not free.
And of course, my 386 being the gateway and all, it gladly provides you with this post at 0 load as usual:)
ps: Watch your ass, Cost effective is lining up to take a big bite out of it:)
I find it amusing why most scientists seem to always try and prove evolution, rather than looking for the truth and the bigger picture.
I mean, why doesnt anyone take any notice of what is written in the Bible, and the evidence for its scripture?
For example, Noahs ark has been found. It size and position is exactly as described in the bible. Nobody cares except those who are looking for truth.
A much more simple example would be the existance of Jesus Christ. Well, there is no doubt he existed, is there? History is based on his existance.
I refuse to believe that all life on earth was a fluke. Out of nowhere, pure chance, fluke. What rubbish.
If it was a fluke, Then why is it, that no man has ever shown how the first living thing on this earth, came to be? Should the depth of the makeup of even simple living things, be clue enough to conclude: Life was not a fluke. Life has order and design.
In addition to pulling into the pits, fixing problems, and driving slowly...
It would be far more effective if team members stopped crashing into each other:)
And if team member A wants to overtake team member B because driver A is driving faster and better, then drive B should pull over and let driver A pass:)
This way the team could score more points and perhaps driver A could set some lap records;)
IMO, 2.2 is the latest stable kernel.
If I understand correctly, Kernels in major development or state of instability have odd minor version numbers, eg, 2.1, 2.3, 2.5...
How come 2.4 is not currently 2.3 ? And what is to be expected of 2.6 ?
I hope quality improves otherwise linux will be lapped by unconfigureable traction engine's. I hope the drivers in teams 2.4 and above, pull into the pits, fix all problems, and take it slowly.
Otherwise the kernel might crash and may not finish the race:)
2.2 races quite nicely, in a 386 with only 40 Horse Power;)
Linux is a LONG way off being close to a reasonable desktop for normal users, IMO.
In windows I can rely on the same key shortcuts between apps, eg, Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V. Not so in Linux, its completely spack. Way to many inconsistencies, and not to mention, *gasp*, bugs and crashes.
Something else I found when I was trying to learn about linux, A lot of linux geeks I seeked help from, seemed to be complete prats, whom think that because im a newbie, that they are smart and I dense, and knowledge ( or "clues" ) such as theirs shalt never fall unto me in any fashion. Some help did come from others, though, and whom seemed not to have their heads in the clouds. Those people are not a majority. Overall, It were a very negative experience whilst trying to climb up learning curve.
Win32 owns Linux as a desktop, but i don't know about XP though, I have not tried it yet.
The above is not to say that Linux is not very coolies and very powerful as a console, i have me a 386 gateway ( 56k ) running potato with 2.2.20, and its always stable and idle, and waiting for something to do:) I have also run up another very low end box as a firewall / gateway, A 486 DX4 100, and it has relieved a Win2000 box from its wingate dutys, and with it, pleased the owner.
But Linux is still a Joke as a mainstream desktop:)
"Oh, and in any case, inference is a hell of alot better than believing what voices in my head tell me, which is what much of religion is founded on."
Try reading the Bible instead of listening to the voices in your head:) The Authorized King James version, perhaps.
"Anyway, I am not too knowledgeable about Darwin's personal feelings, but then we don't bother with, lets say, what Michael Faraday thought, when we talk about electrical engeneering nowadays, do we?"
Perhaps because his experiments can actually be reproduced in the lab today?
"In any case, no matter how implausible or incomprehensible the theory of evolution seems to some people (and I don't mean anyone in particular here) the fact remains that no other theory exists to challenge it."
Well I think that Creation by a God, or even an experiment by aliens, makes more sense and seem more likely than the theory of evolution, and both have more evidence than the theory of evolution, which is little if not zero reasonable evidence. While the son of God who created life on earth, there is evidence that Jesus existed. There should also be no doubts as to the existence of alien life forms, whom appear to be more intelligent and/or advanced than humans of this earth.
And I belive with most certainty, that there is indeed one God, who has a son named Jesus. And most hopefully, one day I might be lucky enough to get some programming lessons off of either of them:)
Settle down huh?
Well Darwin himself had serious doubts about his own theory, if I am not mistaken?
And I live in New Zealand, not America, but that does not mean our education system is anything to be pleased with:)
Cheers

I think a reason why normal batteries still exist is because they make companys money.
:)
Sort of like oil companys not wanting any alternate fuels to be used because their profit is at risk.
IMO anyway

Does anyone get the feeling sometimes, that MS might be employing people to try and stir up linux communitys?
Just ive noticed lots of very weird trolling type posts that even a bored, twisted person would not bother writing.

"According to the rest of the world, Americans have never invented or accomplished anything original.
:D And then America went on the big 10 year mission to get to the moon first ? :)
Even with things that are clearly American, like the moon landing, you have some foreign prick sponsoring a documentary saying it never happened. "
Was it the Russians that got into space first though?
Yes, A kiwi is indeed a flightless bird. A kiwi is also an alias for a New Zealand citizen :)
Of course you blokes all know that kiwis were the first to fly, right? :)
Fair go, its true.
I wonder which will embarass MS more, that they might finally be pushed around by someone more powerfull than them, or, the source code its self? :)

How come there are ratings for each post? And why would someone want to spend so much time rating them all?
You might want to use the King James Version, Dude :)
Anything else in english is prolly corrupt.

I wonder how many MS employees are posting here on a regular basis, trying to sway thinking and opinion of anyone that visits.
