The SFC Dune adaptation was really quite good, but I thought the '85 Lynch film, for all its deviations, did an excellent job of capturing the atmosphere of the milieu.
-- That's funny, because the various levels of US government has provided me with roads, plumbing, housing, access to safe water, electricity, dial-up and then high-speed internet.
Do you understand the differences between state, municipal, and federal government?
I just don't understand how Slashdot can be flooded with stories of US government incompetence and malfeasance at every level, and at everything, and yet people swear up and down they can be trusted with healthcare. No, they cannot. Our government is filled with bad and/or stupid people. CYA. The US government does not have your back. Ever.
Oh, no. There were tons of us saying our government could not be trusted with shit this important, and we were right. "But Europe!" they said. Well, we don't have a European government. We have an American government, with all the heft and agility of the Titanic. Crony-capitalism under a veneer of pretend-socialism and you have a recipe for guaranteed disaster. Now, is it the end of the world? Not really, just for the poor marks that bought Marketplace insurance plans.
Well, hold on, now. Let's put some context on that number. First, our per-capita emissions are improving year over year (this is also true of Europe). This image gives us more context, but still leaves out some important facts: OECD Americas includes #2 America, while the lower China is #1. BUT, the image is pretty good for establishing trends in emissions. First world countries are trending down, China and ME are trending up. As China begins outsourcing production for their own environmental concerns, look for China the plateau and Africa to start spiking.
The virtual boy was a "portable" device, sure, maybe (but not really). But it was not a harness in which is mounted a mobile device, which is what this patent covers.
*I* got it from Mystery Science Theatre 3000. It was the closing line of (I THINK) a Harvey Corman flick, and it became a long running gag that Joel would say it whenever the bad guy died right before the credits.
As part of the patent, they would have to define what they mean by "mobile device". To avoid prior art, it has to mean something that hasn't been patented or implemented already.
I can think of at least one friend who made contributions with that intention, before abandoning his work.
Your anecdote does not help make your point. Your friend's attempt to leverage this career-improving "exploit" failed, because kernel development isn't something some trivial resume-padding you can pick up in a weekend. It's not Python.
As importantly, who has the authority to make this decision for everyone on the earth?
I dunnow. It sure felt sunnier in Berlin. Maybe it was the breakfast pastries.
Yeah, but in those countries, they count beer and cider as alcohol. No self-respecting Irishman would do the same.

Lighten up, Francis.

All the things he listed were due to local and state, not federal government.

Bibliophiles and science-literates. The lesson is: stop trying.
Other countries are somehow managing to give their citizen's healthcare. And Beelzabub hasn't risen to claim their souls.
Why do you trust the US government as much as their governments? That's madness.
In the free market, I am allowed to not purchase products from companies I cannot trust. Or, at least, I could.

Technically, they are. Marketplace insurance is just a private plan with an extra layer of government collusion. Crony-capitalism at its finest.

LOL you are correct and I always always get them mixed up!
"Look, it's Hedy Lamarr!"
"HEEEEDDDLY....!"

By narrowing the patent to specifically cover using a mobile device, such as an iPhone, mounted in a VR headset. There is hardly prior art for that.
"He dared to tamper... in God's domain..."
"Wat?" is a perfectly acceptable response to the GGP's schizophasia.
Well, I guess that opens a philosophical discussion of whether writing device drivers counts as "kernel coding" at all.

Often, I'm told.
No, he's also seen Gigli, Ishtar, and Domino.
