    patriotism is the virtue of the vicous Sir Oscar Wilde MS auto update is turned off as the users have no way of knowing how to fix the system after auto-update breaks it and its too expensive to call me to come do it. not to mention that autoupdate breaks applications time and again so as a matter of course its turned off after the 3rd or 4th visit to uninstall ms updates. My customers rarely run it because its more damaging than the Virii and worms

  2. As an internationalized US citizen on Stronger Anti-Spam Law Proposed · · Score: 2, Insightful

    Spam--come on if the christian coalition (caps left off on purpose) want spam stopped so their children do not have to see t&a they should filter their email better and stop having their children sign up for the sex mailing list in the first place.

    As for spam in general. laws will not help but will just serve to allow lawyers, RIAA and others loop holes to screw over the internet. When it is time to err it needs to be in favor of the freedom of speech-take care of spam yourself with a good filter, deal with it the same as you do your mail box with postal mail-->the argument about spam being free is BS it has to be written and (maybe spell checked) and then has to be sent, it is just cheaper than postal mail. The government need to stop trying to legislate everything and let us live our lives freely.

  3. Are you kidding on Public Domain Enhancement Act petition · · Score: 1

    This actually makes what Disney and the RIAA want to turn into legitimate endeavors. If this can pass the whole thing about forever copyrights looks to be approved by all sides. Copyrights were instituted by congress "for the public" the real endeavor needs and has to be copyrights that actually expire, period end of story so they can fall into the public domain and be useful to THE PUBLIC. Copyrights are considered a necessary evil nothing more (except by those who want lots of money off them, and they keep enough people lied to and believing that other can make money this way too but it is 1% that gets 99% of the money-if you are reading this you are most likely in the 99% that dont benefit if copyrights dont expire)

    Want to do something constructive???? Copyrights need to expire after 5-10 years-The PUBLIC rights are given away by our dear congress to corporations, but this is immoral with the way they are signing my rights and my childrens rights away for ever incresing periods of time, keep it up and I am morally obliged to fight back (whether it be through petitions, protest or something else but dont expect me to support some b.s. that plays into Disney's hands at the cost of $1 and all our rights

  4. All tech from Japan on North Korea's School For Hackers? · · Score: 1

    Hey I am currently living in Japan N. Korea gets free unchecked exports from here (usually marked as food, but even the government here admits most of it is Money from "north Korean companies" i.e. N. Korean government opened banks in Japan used to filter the drug money they earn here) N. Korea has also been kidnapping people from here dcoumented back to the 70s to train their own people. I am sure it is not to hard to smuggle someone in as well. The only way to shut down N Korea is to get the Japanese government to shut down this b.s.

    BS if you buy a 757 you do get the blue prints as well and all the schematics to the engine, otherwise it is impossible to upkeep. The point is not that it is free but that when you purchase a piece of software you are doing just that purchasing it, that means if I can not modify it (hence one of the needs for the source code) I am being robbed of part of my purchase--this doesn't mean that I have any right to install it on 100 machines just that I have access to what I paid for which is only right.

  9. WIndows reasons on What's Keeping You On Windows? · · Score: 1

    I use Linux soley as my OS so let me relate the user I works with reason for staying on Windows. 1. Software copying--If I can copy Windows for free why should I learn a new OS 2. MCSE --I spent a lot of time getting MS certified If Linux gets big that piece of paper is worthless (opps already is) 3. Apps -- Linux doesnt have ay office apps (oh they do) graphics then (WOW never saw GIMP), Financial (they have that too) Graphics are slow (ok so that was faster and your PC only has that little bit of memory) Web Browser (opps Netscape and Mozilla) DVDs (no I dont watch them on Windows I use a real player, oh Xine with decoder plugins) ....... 4. Stability--My windows box has 99.999% uptime (ok so I dont count for reboot time as the server takes over 15 min to start each time--reboot dont count and lock-ups dont eaither, blue screens never saw them my server automatically reboot with ASR thing>) 5. I used Linux and it was hard to install (okay that was 5 years ago when I still had a Win 95 desktop) 6. because I can program in Windows faster. 7. I am tired of learning new skills (ok XP and 2000 made me learn new stuff and AD doesn't quite work right 14. Windows is cheaper (What Linux comes free with all that and Programming tools and GUI editors and Office packages........) 15. Windows is easier to keep updated! Ha you will never get me on that one (opps Red Carpet) 16. MS Office (opps crossover) 17. Oh just go away I give up untill Bill Gates actually makes it where I cant pirate 90% of my software I will use Windows (oh S^!T I didnt see about the Software validating stuff, just go away and leave me with my Windows)

  10. C, C++, Java Standards Languages on MS/Waterloo Curriculum Deal On Hold · · Score: 1

    Face it C# is and always will be a MS only Language, (VB, Visual C++) as such they have no place on the mandatory list but should be listed as optionals. On the other side we Have Java, C, C++ (Lisp, Fortran, Cobol.....) which are industry stadards and run on all platforms as such they do have a place on the required list. Putting proprietary technology on the required list is not only crazy, its plain bad practice. Keep to the center for the required classes and offer the others for electives where they belong (Hell would have been a huge fight at my college-Java was even a huge fight as with Suns semi-tight control of it caused some eyes to be turned skyward) Glad my degree doesn't come from a college that does BS like this

  11. vote with your pocketbook and emails on "Linux is *the* threat," Says Microsoft · · Score: 1

    While I have my doubts about this email being true or not (Microsoft is usually pretty tight about email leaks--the only thing they are tight about and their only security concern) I do think if we as the Linux community want to see more wins on our side we should do like the religous and other groups. We need to email the hell out of Ameritrade telling them that we wouldn't trust our money to be handled by a system built on a buggy Win2000 base. If invested pull the money and put it somewhere else. This is why the other groups do so well--This is what Windows does along with courting D.C. to make bad things go away and get stupid bill proposals started.
