  3. A step forward on A Sound Server For X · · Score: 1

I think this could definitely be a step forward. That is if anyone uses it. If people actually decide to use this system it would be really nice to be able to have remote logins and have sound play over the X11R6...

Two things that really hinder open source software:
    1) Developers don't plan it out and the code looks like muck.
    2) People don't pay any attention to the project.

One thing you need to consider is bandwidth, if you apply any amount of decent compression to X11 data, it could be reduce bandwidth usage by a huge amount.

Perhaps if someone gets a decent setup, you could have people producing dummy terminals that would login to an X11 applicaiton server. It wouldn't be able to run games or anything, but it would definitely be something to consider. I know several schools that use the m$ solution to that, maybe we could get X11 to do that also? The only thing you run into then is removable disk access, printers, usb devices (usb storage).

I'm no x11 genius, but do the current audio servers run over x11, or is it something that needs to be compiled into kde apps, or gnome apps? and can the x11 protocol be compressed?

    That's my $.02

  5. Do they work anyway? on Problems With OEM ATI Cards And ATI's Linux Driver · · Score: 2, Informative

I got a boxed ati radeon 8500, and the drivers don't work anyway for me. The DRI module won't load into the kernel, nor will it recompile.

The xfree86 firegl side drivers leave the console looking like it went through a potato masher.

It's really sad that I bought an ATI card specifically because I knew ATI had open source drivers for their Radeon cards. Well, I waited over a year for drivers for the 8500 that don't work...

Wow, what loyalty to the linux community.

Closed source drivers maybe just PR, but at least nVidia has a reason why their closed source (The SGI contract or whatever). AFAIK (and corect me if I'm wrong) ATI has no real reason for closed source drivers.

  17. DIY "new ergo keyboard" on Vertical Keyboard vs Carpal Tunnel · · Score: 1

Get two USB keyboards and a lot of duct tape. What do you get? Your ergonomic keyboard :) Three reasons why I don't need this anyway: 1) My elbows stick out, yes. But what are arm rests for then (well, maybe I need to say elbow rests). 2) The elevation of my keyboard (aproximately 4 inches above my elbows) keeps my wrists from bending up or down (propper angle). So I can let my wrists hang on my "incorrect" ergo keyboard's wrist pad. 3) My wrists don't twist (much) either because my elbows are out sitting on my arm rests. I guess it's just a matter of sitting back improperly in my improper chair with my improper ergo keyboard and having fun on a computer. And let off your hands every few minutes. Plus, try playing Quake 3 or Tribes 2 on that. It would be a nightmare. There's my two cents.

  18. Habbits and not design? I disagree... on How Effective are Ergonomic Keyboards? · · Score: 1

In the early stages of the computer, general rules were formed about how to type and sit at a computer. Perhaps those were not exactly optimal? The human hands were never meant to hit keys that fast, they were meant to manipulate objects.

I'm not saying that the theory of our habbits being bad is not completely off, I'm just saying that maybe you need to look upon the subject in a different manner.

Typing the old fassion way (wrists off the keyboard, sitting up, back off the chaair) is tiring for me. So yeah, I sit back, place my wrists down, and I can still type on my ergo keyboard as fast.

Perhaps we should start looking at technology serving us, rather than us serving technology. Yes, it will make us lazy, but hey, that's what it's all about isn't it?

    There's my two cents.
