Sounds interesting. Any examples? I was thinking of Canada, Western Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. (Not really all that sure about the Aussies/Kiwis tho). We don't have very "draconian" laws here, many people in rural areas own rifles and/or shotguns, and while they are supposed to registered, many aren't, and noone's much concerned about it. Handguns and automatics (including almost all "semi"autos) are either banned or restricted. Noone much minds. Hunters still hunt, quite successfully, even to the point of being able to take down >1000 lb bears with straightforward rifles. Don't really see how everyone owning weapons is supposed to deter police abuse. I mean, you start waving a gun at a cop, he's going to drop you, and almost certainly going to be justified. About the only problem our mounties have is getting overzealous when busting up protests, (usually because some hotheaded politico told their c.o. to) but at least noones getting anally raped with plungers.
Yeah, I've heard that arguement before, and it seems sound, but real-world examples tend to contradict it. Even if one looks at the numbers on a per-capita basis, violent crime, especially involving firearms do not occur more often in unarmed nations. Quite the opposite in fact...
They're working on making it illegal here in Alberta. Can't recall if it's passed, and not yet in effect, or if it's not yet passed...
It's fine by me. The fewer things preventing the a$$hole going 20Km/h _below_ the speed limit in the fast lane (which, as we all know, is for going 20Km/h _over_ the limit) from realizing that he's holding up traffic, the better...
Oh, I agree, Mitnick was picked out and destroyed as an example "See, we are capable of prosecuting computer criminals!" I was commenting just on the previous post. Of all the things I think is wrong with the American "Justice" system, high-end economic crime is the only area that I think needs to have drastically increased punishment...
If I want to steal a wallet, and I know everybody I could steal one from has a gun. I simply wait until I find someone off by themselves, then I shoot first.
All right, who marked the second post as redundant?
Slash needs to force moderators to read at -1, in the order of posting. Maybe a setting of redundant should have some manner of box to indicate the earlier post that already said the same thing?
Rape and murder are horrific acts that destroy one, or at most, a few lives. Totally and utterly.
High-level economic crimes can bankrupt thousands, or even hundreds of thousands of people. Not quite the same level of destruction, but their lives are still ruined, and their are magnitudes more victims for a single act.
P.S. "start helping actual humans on the streets of your hometown" ?? I help people who can help themselves. Most homeless people are mental and should be recycled into a protein source.
Dear God, I hope that's supposed to be a reference to "A Modest Proposal" I really, really do... And my family & friends wonder why I'm so cynical about the human race...
If everyone has a gun, the crims will still pick the easiest target: whoever is easiest to shoot and kill before engaging in whatever criminal activity they're interested in. The only way I can think of that being armed will reduce your personal risk is if you are visibly armed, and most of the other potential targets are not. There's a pretty simple explanation for American muggers using guns when many other nation's muggers have knives at most...
OK, quick question for you and the previous poster(s). Do you people actually put correct info on your Safeway card form? I got one the first day they had their little temp person with a clipboard, and I've been using it ever since. Sure the tellers always call me "Mr. Smith" when they hand back my card, but I get the sale price, shop at the store I prefer, and still get the occassional 5% coupon.
I'm one of the socialists you claim never to notice. And I don't have the problem spoting them in the slashdot crowd amongst the "fervent libertarians" that are supposedly the "norm around here". Oh, and while other's amongst us may be closet-dwellers, (not that I blame American socialists for hiding from anti-commie progaganda victims) I'm very open about my views. About the only place I agree with libertarians is for all agencies to stay the fsck out of my private life.
God himself could compete if he really tried. I'm sure CNN would switch to pillars of fire & 100' waves in New York, or maybe a magnitude 12 quake somewhere or other...
Why pay a person an hourly wage, when you can install a filter and only pay for it once?
a: Because these people are already there. You been to a library lately? There are staff there to help people with research, and to make sure that everyone is behaving themselves. This includes making sure that people aren't misusing the computer access, especially when there are other people waiting their turn.
b: Because the community, the library, the employee, are not making the decisions. Let the library staff create the blacklist. Or at least let it be visible.
Achieves a similar goal. Parents feel safer if things are censored. Parents feel safer if they can just look at the cover, see a sticker, and say, NO! The sticker is another thing to make it easier for parents to not be involved. Is it really that hard to ask to listen to music that you're considering buying for your kid?
$65 Cdn? Where you at? Calgary and Edmonton are both $39.95 Cdn. Yeah the service sucks and the speed is flaky, but I have no interest in going back to 56K.
Yep. And Marvel's financial difficulties are largely over. They got actual talent to work on most of the books and dropped a lot of crap entirely. (Of course, the last year or so, they've been having trouble getting the talent to stay put, so who knows?)
Marvel hasn't had noticable camp since the early 70's. Same as every one else. It hasn't always been great (or even good), but it hasn't made you want to hurt someone after you read it.
He's the one most likely to win. Of course, he's nearly the farthest from what I believe on most of the "issues". Only thing missing is blatant racism and rabid isolationist tendancies...

Took a lot of practice. Doubt I can do it anymore tho. (It's been a few years.)
Makes me wonder how much stock the grocers are putting in the stats they're compiling.

Careful. Mr. Black's been known to viciously sue people who badmouth him...

That's Raimi's work? Damn. Very good movie. Like Fargo, but with better story and characters, and no accents!
No. But Blade does.

Cusack's too old. Parker needs to be High School / Early College age. Norton, otoh sounds great.

I see. Makes sense, I suppose. Never actually seen one myself. (Unless that's what caused that blood-red moon I saw a few months ago...)
