Oh Yeah this will be a lot better than the ancient drive technology we use now. Every time the power goes out for more than a few minutes (or just a flicker if you don't have a UPS) you will lose all your data. Just what I want to store all my data on, NOT!

  2. Re:So... on Nintendo Fined $143m for Price-Fixing · · Score: 1

I agree why should they be fined? It's their product and they should be able to charge whatever they want for it. There is also no reason why everyone should pay the same price. Basic economics different people are willing to pay different amounts for the same product. If they were asking too much people wouldn't have bought the games.

  3. Re:Linux Alternatives? on SuSE Linux will run Microsoft Office · · Score: 1

It doesn't matter if the Office-equivalents are as good or even better than Office. People want to run the software they already have and know. Companies have standardized on Office and they don't want to switch overnight. When Microsoft created Windows they made damn sure it ran all the DOS apps people already owned. Then as now the best way to get people to try new software is if they don't have to give up the old software they know and use every day.

Dish Networks sells a PVR integrated with their satellite receiver. No monthly fees and the whole system can be leased. I have one and love it. As I understand it does have fewer features than TiVo but you can pause and record with the push of a button and setting it up to record Junkyard wars every week is a breeze.

  6. Bloatware on Another Office Alternative · · Score: 1

One of the main arguments against Office seems to be that it is bloated. Truth is that customers don't care about bloat. As long as it will run on their system it isn't an issue. However removing even one feature that they sometimes use is a major issue. To beat office you would need something more bloated that office. Even then the installed base and the bundling with new hardware would probably kill your chances. Open Software that doesn't care about making a profit is the best change in the long run.

  9. Re:OnStream? on Affordable Home Backups for 10-100G Systems? · · Score: 0

I've been using the USB Onstream 30GB model for about a year now under NT and 2000. No major complaints. It's reliable and easy to use. The software also makes it look like a just another disk drive. So it can be used for things other than backup. Being a tape drive the seek time is rather slow but still if you have some very large files that you need very infrequently you can just copy them to a cartridge and pop it in when you need it.

  10. Re:This is not the traditional embedded market on Windows XP Embedded · · Score: 0

    > Where smallness ...

Small is a relative term as is embedded. Memory is cheap who cares if you need a bunch. I mean what are we saving it for?

I don't think XP Embedded is going to show up in home thermostats soon but there are lots of markets where adding a hard disk and a bunch of memory is not a problem.

Also off the shelf PCs actually do quite well in industrial monitoring and control applications. We have many PC's running NT in printing plants that just run and run without any problems.

So a company can leverage it's experience with PC's and Windows. Customers also are comfortable since it's just another Windows PC.

  12. The machines don't care. on Ternary Computing Revisited · · Score: 1

Machines are good at jumping though hoops and are just as happy counting in base 2 as base 22! I do think people would be better off not using base ten. For example base 12 has the advantage of being evenly divisible by 2, 3 and 4 so you can evenly divide things in half, thirds or quarter which are the most common divisions. Base ten chokes on dividing things into thirds. Using base 12 or base 16 would also allow a more compact representation which would be a big help dealing with screens which are always too small. Of course base 16 has the major advantage of easy translation to base 2. So everyone would be comfortable with hex numbers since those would be normal numbers. The US seems to be willing to ignore the base 10 metric system forever maybe we can introduce a base 12 or base 16 measurement system. :-)
