  2. landards of stiving on Generation Wrecked · · Score: 1

just because my small studio apartment has a computer and a tv and a nice rug, and my small car has a 6disc changer and air-con, doesn't mean that being out on my slim IT ass with no safety net during a Chicago winter is something to praise God and our great nation for. A roof is a roof whether there is a TV under it or not, and selling my TV or my computer or my rug and futon will keep the roof over my head for maybe a month and a half. I suppose I can't expect the same standards my dad of 35 years at Sears&Roebuck had even though he dropped our of college too, but he never had any problem keeping a roof oved his head, and he sold shoes like Al Bundy until he got his break. For me, my breaks have been getting to continue working while i watch all my friend and co-workers get canned. Now I am reduced to contract work, and none of my other tech-buddies can even find work. If I could find a place to build an adobe hut, plant a garden, and put my BoyScout skillz to good use, i'd take it. Where in America can one do that? I think I'd have to be making at least 7$ an hour to cover property taxes and expenses.

  4. we are the music makers... on The New Webcasting Compromise · · Score: 1

I, for example, have about 20hours of misc recordings of my own music that stream randomly from my site. I am not playing other people's music, however some of the music was produced while I was signed to a label. Does that mean I owe someone $500USD minimum a year to stream my own music? Would someone at the label have to complain first? Someone at the RIAA that has a copyright listing from the label? Howabout I pay the RIAA $500$ to give ME a check for $0.0 for streaming my own music?

  5. distribution on Non-MP3 Codecs? · · Score: 1, Interesting

Being a musician and selling music online from our site, we are also trying to deal in electronically distributable compressed formats for $. I dont feel right distributing a Llossy compressed format for minimal $, but I know a lot of people dont really care one way or the other. Ideally, they would be able to melt a cd of the orig 16bit 44.1khz wavs and listen on thier gnarly audiophile system w/ some snacks, but doing this w/ mp3z could be a swarm of annoying artifacts and blorps. This doesnt really matter w/ headphones downtown or in a vehicle going 95mph. Maybe we should offer both lossy and lossless compressed k-rad, so people that care can have the real bits. Do we think enough people have fast enough connections to pay a couple bucks for 300MB of lossless k-rad sound and music?
