  1. Re:Why caps can be good on Time Warner Transfer Caps May Inspire Fair-Price Legislation · · Score: 1

This is crazy. Basically what you are saying is that caps are good because the super awesome cable company is nice enough to pick the things you are allowed to watch and do. What if you don't want the same things they do? Why on earth do you want to have a company pick your media for you? You think they have your best interests at heart? Or just maybe they are picking media they have a vested interest in having you consume? If your companies had spent more time and money building infrastructure to increase the size of the links to the rest of the world instead of screwing you guys over for so long, you'd have better service would you not? So explain to me again how having Time Warner decide if I'm allowed to watch stuff on Netflix or Tivo is a good idea. I know I sure to enjoy $10 PPV that I can't pause or rewatch.

  2. Re:3dfx driver?! on Syllable Project's Developer Newsletter #1 · · Score: 4, Insightful

As Syllable is still under heavy development, most people shouldn't run it on their main machine yet. The 3dfx driver was ported because someone needed it to support some old video card they were using in an extra box. The more drivers the better, why are you complaining?

  3. I Got It on Experiences with Laser Eye Surgery? · · Score: 2, Informative

I got LASIK done about 2 years ago. I would recommend it to anyone. I went from 20/200 to 20/20. That being said, it did affect my night vision. The older lasers could only treat 6mm on your eye which means that at night when my pupils expand to be larger than that 6mm I get halos around lights. It's not that bad, but driving at night in the rain is a little more difficult than it used to be. IIRC, there is a new FDA approved laser that can treat 9mm which should eliminate this problem. A word of advise. Do NOT skimp on your doctor. I went to one of the best in the country in Dallas who has performed over 10,000 of these procedures. I was in and out in less than a half hour even though my surgery was non-standard due to my deeply recessed eyes. I paid $1500 per eye (3 years ago).

  4. Just called on Verizon Announces FTTP Prices · · Score: 3, Interesting

I just called my local Verizon office and they really had very little idea of what I was talking about. The manager told me that it would be available in a month or two and put me on a waiting list to be called when the order was available. This is in Bethlehem, PA. No more information about the pricing or upload or anything, though.

  6. Re:I don't know about this on Apple's iTunes DRM Cracked? · · Score: 3, Insightful
Ok, I'm sorry but this is a little short-sighted. Just because you happen to like iTunes doesn't mean that the rest of us do. People who use multiple OS's can't use the files. I can't use them in my MP3 player or in my Discman that plays MP3 CD's. I can't use them in my car stereo which does the same. I have to use Apple's idiot player to play the damn files. iTunes uses 30-40MB of RAM while running, that's not a price I'm willing to pay. Why should I? I have been using Winamp for years, I donated to the project, why should I have to use another player? It's my music, I have the right to use it in any way I choose as long as I don't give it away. Your definition of "something that works" is a little off, iTunes does not work for me and I would be there are some people who will agree with me.

iTunes is a step in the right direction, but it's going to be a while before the RIAA et al figures out that DRM is an impossible dream. Any system that is created will be broken. As soon as an online music store sells me music in an open format that I can do whatever I want with, I will be there. Until then, thank you Jon!

If you search for 'contests' and click on the sponsored link then you should have an abundant source. Also, if you sign up for a few of those "Free" trials at porno websites, you should start to get some serious spam.

  8. Re:ala Big Corporate Mofos on How to "Open Source" Custom, Contract Software? · · Score: 5, Insightful

While this may seem like an attractive idea, the ethos of open source is the free exchange of ideas. This ideal would be damaged by tricking a company into signing a deal that would open source software which they paid for. This would not only engender a possible court battle when the company wishes to enforce its rights but would also ensure that the company would be less willing to discuss/implement open source solutions in the future. If you cannot convince a company of the benefits of open source, then you must bow to their wishes, after all, they are paying you. Just another side note, if you are a member of the ACM the kind of conduct you suggest would most likely be against the ethical guidelines.
