  1. Re:Covers? on Partial Guitar Hero II Setlist · · Score: 3, Informative

Even though what you're saying may be true, by "the way they made the game" I think he meant single recordings can't be used since the game has a separated guitar track (or two) that is interactive with the player. Splicing the guitar track from the original recording would be too difficult/expensive to do, so making a new recording with a separate, distinct guitar track is necessary for it to work in the game. Using the original recordings would be theoretically easier (if it were possible), but since there needs to be an additional guitar track for the player to play along with, it's impossible with a single-track recording.

  2. Re:sabotage on Partial Guitar Hero II Setlist · · Score: 1

That may be true (and it'd be a cool song), but you have to remember that any palm muting is null and void with the current Guitar Hero controller. Straight eighth notes wouldn't be so hard compared to current songs, so the difficulty of the guitar on this song would be downgraded a bit from its difficulty on a real guitar.

  3. Re:The Things I Want... on Guitar Hero II Announced · · Score: 2, Informative

You're not the only one who thought Van Halen was missing. Or AC/DC, or several others. You can't blame RedOctane for not trying - these bands were asked, they just declined. Hopefully there'll be more of these bands showing up for GH2.

  4. A better setting, indeed on New Star Wars TV Series Confirmed · · Score: 1

At first I thought it was saying the series would cover the 20 missing years of Anakin Skywalker's life. Am I the only one who think that would be far more interesting, to see how Darth Vader's path progressed from a broken jedi to a full-fledged Sith Lord?

I don't know if it's illegal or not, but some Canadians have ways of dealing with mods.

  6. Re:Cleaned up film transfer? on Indiana Jones coming to DVD in November · · Score: 1

Generally I'm all about preserving the original print. In this case, I think the exception can be made. A lot of touching up will most likely be done, if they do any at all (which I'm sure will happen). I don't imagine the majority of viewers will be upset if the reflection can't be seen in the new DVD release.

It'd be comparable to getting upset because you couldn't see the wires suspending actors in Crouching Tiger, or even the Matrix, which might have been visible in an early print. It's not meant to be part of the movie.

  7. Re:Cleaned up film transfer? on Indiana Jones coming to DVD in November · · Score: 1

I guess I really wanted to know if they "cleaned" the transfer. The image in question is one that gives away how a scene was done in the snake pit. Unfortunately, restoration alone does not imply fixing of issues like this. I was curious if there's been any work to modify the image - to update it, if you will.

For those who are curious, it's the scene in the snake pit in Raiders, when Indy's on his belly face-to-face with one of the snakes. If you look carefully, you can easily see a reflection. This shows how this scene was shot, to allow Harrison Ford to actually be (safely) within three feet of a live snake.

  8. Cleaned up film transfer? on Indiana Jones coming to DVD in November · · Score: 5, Interesting

Does anyone know if the film transfer will be cleaned for DVD? I, for one, would prefer not to see in blissful DVD detail the reflection of the snake in the glass during the scene in the snake pit in Raiders. Kind of takes you out of your immersion in the movie a bit.

  9. The problem with experience, a possible solution on Which IT Certifications for Specific IT Jobs? · · Score: 1

A lot of people have commented about it all being who you know, as well as having some experience under your belt. In my experience, it's a bit of both. I have a BS in CS (working on the MS), and I believe what helped me obtain employment with such a fresh degree was my resume. Not so much the pretty formatting, as the list of previous employments, which was substantial.

If you don't have a lot of previous experience or know the right people, how do you get a job? It's the vicious loop - no experience = no job, but no job = no experience. My recommendation would be this: consider contracting. I started with contracting jobs to help get additional post-graduate experience. The pay is not always the best, but it will get you the experience you need to move on to bigger (and maybe better) employments. If you do a nice enough job showing off your skills as a contractor, some firms will allow you to be hired on permanently, up from your contracting position. It's something to consider.

  10. Re:Tiger and Crane Fists on Review: Kung Pow · · Score: 1

Actually, Tiger and Crane together form a very well-known style of kung fu, called Hung-Gar. Here's a story on how the style was developed:

    ---

According to legend, a Shaolin Master of the Tiger Claw style was out in his garden. Spotting a Crane pecking away at his newly planted vegetables, the priest grabbed a stick and tried to chase the intruder away. The bird, however, eluded each swing of the stick. At one point, the Crane leaped up into the air, and the surprised monk found himself the victim of a furious counterattack. Using its sharply pointed beak as a weapon, the Crane became a formidable foe. The priest made a complete study of the Crane's behavior and learned how this frail-looking creature would respond to various types of attack. By imitating these movements, a series of new fighting techniques based on fluidity, gracefulness, and sharp pecking attacks, were developed. Combining these unusual Crane tactics with his dynamic Tiger Claw techniques, the Shaolin monk devised a new and highly effective method combat.

In the 18th century, Hung Hee Goon acquired this unique system based on the Tiger and Crane. Boxer Hung had been schooled in the teachings of Chee Sin, a Master of the "Long-Hand Art", and Fong Wing Chuen, an expert of the "Short-Hand Art". With the knowledge that he acquired from these two Shaolin priests, Boxer Hung added the Tiger & Crane techniques, creating the Hung-Gar (Hung's Family) school of Kung Fu.

    ---

I've not actually seen the 1976 film, but there's some background to educate the uneducated about Hung-Gar Kung Fu. It is based on the original, traditional Shaolin Kung Fu, and it's still taught today (I'm learning it).

  11. XBox lacks SOME features on How Does XBox Stand Up as a DVD Player? · · Score: 1

Actually, the X-Box does offer digital audio out, although you need to purchase a separate adapter to have the optical port available. There are several adapters available, and they do include support for S-Video as well as component video. Some game discs will support progressive scan video, and since you need component video to play progressive scan anything, the support must clearly be there. And also - for those really wanting quality stuff - Monster Cable provides all of these accessories for the X-Box, although for a little bit more. But hey, it's Monster! Who's complaining?

As far as running silent - why do you want your discs to run silent? Especially if you're worried about digital audio support? If you want that detailed of sound, then I don't think you'll be that picky about how quiet the discs spin, although I could be wrong. I own one, and it is definitely not noticeable (to me, at least).
