Colleges and universities sould be prohibited by federal law from entering into ANY lawsuit over "IP" of any kind, since the premise for an institution of learning is to LEARN, not sue, and the monies used to garner an education is ultimately paid for by the tuition of the students, and hence any "IP" is owned by those students and not the institution, since the money used is "tuition" and also publicly funded as well. The suits should be thrown out of court because the institution is NOT wholly "private" but is funded with both endowments, grants and tuitions paid for by the students, so the "ownership" of any idea/s, processes, property and so on actually belong to a vast range of people and not solely by the institution/s. This, in my thought, is THEFT and FRAUD, and not legal for any college or university to be involved with.
Besides this, isn't a college or university supposed to be a place of learning first and not one of filing lawsuits over a process of thought created by those that attend said institution?
How can these "places" lawfully apply for infringements when the basis for such suits involve thoughts alone since the suit bases the entire case upon their "ideas", and as they are not in the "business" of manufacturing but of learning/teaching, the basis for a lawsuit should be judged ineffectual and illegal on that alone, not to mention fraudulent because the institution is using public and private funding to make even more money and profit when they have no legal reason to do so. No college or university is involved with manufacturing, process implementation/s or designs that are currently used, nor to my knowledge, are they hired to be consultants at a corporate level(the entire college or university, that is.)or retained for their inherent and intimate knowledge of the above-noted items.
One attends a college/university to attain knowledge and abilities above what is available in high school, not to be used as pawns in the board-level "profiteering" of the school board and the governing body of those institutions.
Colleges and universities should be chartered as learning institutions ONLY, and FORBIDDEN BY LAW to be involved in holding and retaining any patents or processes or property because those things are paid for in full by the students, the grants, and the endowements "given" to those institutions, and thus, belong to THOSE people alone and not by the school/s.
Should any publicly funded institution be allowed to profit upon the ideas of the attending students if those students come up with a new and novel idea for society, and why should the school be the sole beneficiary for those ideas in the first place, it wasn't the work of the university that arrived at the idea, it was the student/s that did, so how can the school claim ownership and sue for "infringements" over an idea or process that was never thier creation to begin with?
While this "sounds" good in theory; in practice, the reality is difficult to realize with heat buildup, dissipation and localized cooling, not to mention the huge power requirements of such a fiasco...NOT a cost-conservative idea in today's ever increasing "environment-friendly" zealots and "do-gooders" facing us at every turn.
Ideas such as that were fine in the '60s and earlier, but certainly NOT in this age...the idea is to shrink and minimize power consumption, not heat the world and burn power.
Develop this and thrust oneself into poverty quickly, and for what benefit?

Taxing via the government that hands over some or all of that tax to the music biz is, in my view, a clear act of FRAUD upon the taxpayers!
I am very happy I don't buy enough CDs to keep even a dog in food, and will NEVER do more, now that "this" is taking place! I'll keep recroding tunes I like via the radio, filter them, store them to my spare HD and then rip them to tape.

Glad I bought several "drums" of CD-R discs, that way, I have plenty to make copies of tunes, Linux, and OSD "stuff". How do we make sure the CD-R biz is not being forced into an agreement to copy protect a disk that is NOT being used for "only" music, but programs, personal copies of self-written programs and so on...how can the MPAA/RIAA even assume that any or even one disk is being used to circumvent some protective measure/s without valid and substantiated proof of this being don to begin with? Buy a frequency counter that resolves at least 2.8Ghz. and has a 10-digit LCD display.
I use Optoelectronics "CUB" here, i have 4 of them for the shop/service vans in addition to the IFRs and Motorolas...Handy counter and SENSITIVE!
I can routinely resolve the freq. of the nearby radio station that is 10 miles(driving) away from my home, and it locks consistantly on 100.100 every time! I do use an expandable antenna, NOT a helical radiating resistor that most VHF handies use.
Using a helice for 802.11a? WHY? 802.11a is NOT transmitted normally in RHCP or LHCP, but vertically as far as I recall. Your use of circular polarization will DEGRADE your link budget severely! 802.11a uses omni-directional antennas for the hub and clients, so using a helix would not only limit your range, but limit your throughput as well. GO VERTICAL MAN, or GET DIRECTIONAL if you need to! GaAs FET pre amps are commonplace in amateur radio, and even moreso in the letter bands; L, c, X,K and so on...
Losses increase as frequency increases due to radiative loss and dielectric losses, as well as resistive/inductive/rectance losses too.
Improve your reception first, then work on the transmit end, you'll be glad you did.
"N" connectors are fine for brute work, but 802.11a stuff is usually enclosed in smaller cabinets, so use SMA connectors for reasonable form factor relations.
Plus, SMA conns. are built for 2.4 Ghz. and higher, so less loss at the connector port should you swap out to a 5.6 Ghz. app.

I am sorry to hear of your friends being arrested for such stupid things. Now more than ever is the perfect time to realize that all police forces will be used against the people anytime the government "feels" there may be a reason, be it uncalled for or whatever, they still assume there is a "need" to stomp you into the ground, arrest, jail and degrade you in ways that if done by a citizen would surely gain you a very long prison sentence! People have been blindly taught to believe that police are the "good guys" and everybody else was a criminal that just hasn't been caught yet. Canada made sure they keep the people under tight control by making the posession of handguns a crime, thus eliminating the people from returning fire when they themselves are being fired upon by the very police sworn to uphold the rights and the law of the "people"...what a joke!
The U.S. is effectively doing the same, one law at a time. Erode rights with new laws that "legally" circumvent the constitutional rights that are supposedly "guaranteed", but now, so easily dismissed by the courts. How is MS or any software firm "losing" money if I paid for a copy of WIN-98SE and then copied it to several machines I own? How did I "steal" software? I buy software to OWN, not simply use with "permission" of another. My money paid for it, and if MS or XXX wants to retain ownership, then REFUND MY MONEY and I'll sign a CONTRACT OF USE with their attorneys, nothing less than THAT, will suffice! If money paid for it legally, and I have a legit copy, what I paid for is ALL MINE..and NOT "owned" by MS simply because they paid to have a programmer write some program....NONSENSE!

NO, NO, NOPE...no way am I paying good money for SHIT, BUT, since I am NOT reselling thisS garbage for my "personal" profiteering, it is alright to make MANY copies for my OWN machines, never making a buck or two from MS in even the slightest! My copies have taken NOTHING from ANY programmer, his income nor his "potential" income, since I am NOT buying ownership in his life, my "contract" is finished...it ended at the cash register with my purchase of WIN-98SE! Besides, he was already paid for writing that software, so the "lost" revenue/s falls down the embankment and gets run over by a MS truck! Software is worse than any product or service currently available; it's effectively siezed the public, enslaved ideas and corrupted a law that is "supposed" to allow for "creativity", which now, it does neither, but holds inviolate, the coveted works of a few so extreme profit be maintained for those few forever, without thinking that yet more laws are needed to preserve the works of those not being published. Think of how poor the economy would be right now, if everything was done with licenses. Contract ABC construction for a design, but before it makes paper, you "must" sign a license(EULA) for it to be started, then the terms of the license are then revealed to you; containing times of use, limited use, and also the
ownership of that design...getting pretty wild now huh? Colleges and universities sould be prohibited by federal law from entering into ANY lawsuit over "IP" of any kind, since the premise for an institution of learning is to LEARN, not sue, and the monies used to garner an education is ultimately paid for by the tuition of the students, and hence any "IP" is owned by those students and not the institution, since the money used is "tuition" and also publicly funded as well. The suits should be thrown out of court because the institution is NOT wholly "private" but is funded with both endowments, grants and tuitions paid for by the students, so the "ownership" of any idea/s, processes, property and so on actually belong to a vast range of people and not solely by the institution/s. This, in my thought, is THEFT and FRAUD, and not legal for any college or university to be involved with. Besides this, isn't a college or university supposed to be a place of learning first and not one of filing lawsuits over a process of thought created by those that attend said institution? How can these "places" lawfully apply for infringements when the basis for such suits involve thoughts alone since the suit bases the entire case upon their "ideas", and as they are not in the "business" of manufacturing but of learning/teaching, the basis for a lawsuit should be judged ineffectual and illegal on that alone, not to mention fraudulent because the institution is using public and private funding to make even more money and profit when they have no legal reason to do so. No college or university is involved with manufacturing, process implementation/s or designs that are currently used, nor to my knowledge, are they hired to be consultants at a corporate level(the entire college or university, that is.)or retained for their inherent and intimate knowledge of the above-noted items. One attends a college/university to attain knowledge and abilities above what is available in high school, not to be used as pawns in the board-level "profiteering" of the school board and the governing body of those institutions. Colleges and universities should be chartered as learning institutions ONLY, and FORBIDDEN BY LAW to be involved in holding and retaining any patents or processes or property because those things are paid for in full by the students, the grants, and the endowements "given" to those institutions, and thus, belong to THOSE people alone and not by the school/s. Should any publicly funded institution be allowed to profit upon the ideas of the attending students if those students come up with a new and novel idea for society, and why should the school be the sole beneficiary for those ideas in the first place, it wasn't the work of the university that arrived at the idea, it was the student/s that did, so how can the school claim ownership and sue for "infringements" over an idea or process that was never thier creation to begin with?
While this "sounds" good in theory; in practice, the reality is difficult to realize with heat buildup, dissipation and localized cooling, not to mention the huge power requirements of such a fiasco...NOT a cost-conservative idea in today's ever increasing "environment-friendly" zealots and "do-gooders" facing us at every turn. Ideas such as that were fine in the '60s and earlier, but certainly NOT in this age...the idea is to shrink and minimize power consumption, not heat the world and burn power. Develop this and thrust oneself into poverty quickly, and for what benefit?
And here I thought using "public" funds/taxes for a "private" business was supposed to be illegal? Taxing via the government that hands over some or all of that tax to the music biz is, in my view, a clear act of FRAUD upon the taxpayers! I am very happy I don't buy enough CDs to keep even a dog in food, and will NEVER do more, now that "this" is taking place! I'll keep recroding tunes I like via the radio, filter them, store them to my spare HD and then rip them to tape. Using my 1980 vintage Dolby noise reduction from the speaker out port of my soundcard, then feeding my component stero recording "device" to make a nice copy of the music i will be listening to. Cheap, easy and NO profit for MPAA/RIAA...YEEHAA! Glad I bought several "drums" of CD-R discs, that way, I have plenty to make copies of tunes, Linux, and OSD "stuff". Let's turn this into a battle to rid ourselves of these groups of musical terrorism, let's make a "request" to our senators and such to make ALL music formats GPL. Open source tunes; that's the way to listen for low cost and private too no less! How do we make sure the CD-R biz is not being forced into an agreement to copy protect a disk that is NOT being used for "only" music, but programs, personal copies of self-written programs and so on...how can the MPAA/RIAA even assume that any or even one disk is being used to circumvent some protective measure/s without valid and substantiated proof of this being don to begin with? I think it's time to create a tax on the MPAA/RIAA that forces payments to everybody that buys CD-Rs with the same amount being returned to us, the taxpayers for fraudulent business practices and monopolization of a medium they have no legal reason to even attempt to control as they are currently trying to do. We must act NOW, or face an even longer and more futile battle to overturn these patently ILLEGAL acts forced upon us with the government's "blessing"...POOH! I thought the taking of money or "property" for private use was against the constitution, since money isn't "property" by government claims(it could be, since we all own the government, right, or is it really owned by big biz?)we can't ask for what was taken illegaly from us, no matter what was actually taken. Maybe it's time for separate civil suits against the music industry for fraud and use of public funding for private business. Can the music biz afford to defend against a million separate suits of law, valued at several billions of dollars all told? Some obscure law "has" to be on the "books" someplace, somewhere....I mean, there are laws dating back to steering "tillers" on automobiles yet, and laws making it illegal to fish in a river or creek while on horseback(trolling?). Find out the freq. your net/phone is using?? Buy a frequency counter that resolves at least 2.8Ghz. and has a 10-digit LCD display. I use Optoelectronics "CUB" here, i have 4 of them for the shop/service vans in addition to the IFRs and Motorolas...Handy counter and SENSITIVE! I can routinely resolve the freq. of the nearby radio station that is 10 miles(driving) away from my home, and it locks consistantly on 100.100 every time! I do use an expandable antenna, NOT a helical radiating resistor that most VHF handies use. Using a helice for 802.11a? WHY? 802.11a is NOT transmitted normally in RHCP or LHCP, but vertically as far as I recall. Your use of circular polarization will DEGRADE your link budget severely! 802.11a uses omni-directional antennas for the hub and clients, so using a helix would not only limit your range, but limit your throughput as well. GO VERTICAL MAN, or GET DIRECTIONAL if you need to! GaAs FET pre amps are commonplace in amateur radio, and even moreso in the letter bands; L, c, X,K and so on... Losses increase as frequency increases due to radiative loss and dielectric losses, as well as resistive/inductive/rectance losses too. Improve your reception first, then work on the transmit end, you'll be glad you did.
"N" connectors are fine for brute work, but 802.11a stuff is usually enclosed in smaller cabinets, so use SMA connectors for reasonable form factor relations. Plus, SMA conns. are built for 2.4 Ghz. and higher, so less loss at the connector port should you swap out to a 5.6 Ghz. app. Antennas for 802.11a are available here: www.geociites.com/aec9823 Authorized retailer for Antenex products for Amateur radio, commercial radio and trunked systems. Use a duplexer if you want TX/RX on the same antenna with the normal frequency splits used, like cellular/trunked at 45 Mhz. *Bandwidth comes in two flavors; those transmitted, and those received* A good receiver is a far better choice than a powerful transmitter under ALL circumstances. I am sorry to hear of your friends being arrested for such stupid things. Now more than ever is the perfect time to realize that all police forces will be used against the people anytime the government "feels" there may be a reason, be it uncalled for or whatever, they still assume there is a "need" to stomp you into the ground, arrest, jail and degrade you in ways that if done by a citizen would surely gain you a very long prison sentence! People have been blindly taught to believe that police are the "good guys" and everybody else was a criminal that just hasn't been caught yet. Canada made sure they keep the people under tight control by making the posession of handguns a crime, thus eliminating the people from returning fire when they themselves are being fired upon by the very police sworn to uphold the rights and the law of the "people"...what a joke! The U.S. is effectively doing the same, one law at a time. Software is a PRODUCT, nothing more! Programmers provide the SERVICE, the service of programming, nothing more! Selling a software suite/package is selling PRODUCT, nothing more, since I can't call the programmer that wrote the program and request he/she give me the SERVICE I require to USE my software; again, THAT, is a SERVICE, nothing more! How is MS or any software firm "losing" money if I paid for a copy of WIN-98SE and then copied it to several machines I own? How did I "steal" software? Fair use is fair use, nothing less will do! Making profit from that use IS NOT fair use! But my making multiple copies for myself is fine, I bought it and will do whatever I want to do with it, even give a copy away as well. As long as I do not profit from my sharing or giving a copy away, MS and company can't do squat about it, let alone prove it as well. (I secretly encoded the root file with a hidden message that makes the user want to buy stock in Apple.) All I want to convey is this: Copies paid for and kept and owned by myself and nobody else. making a profit from another's work IS theft, and THAT is wrong. As long as I paid for my copy, what I do with that copy is legal, and since I signed no legal contract, I am NOT bound by any terms of use, license or anything. No contract signed, NO CONTRACT/LICENSE! No court will be able to jail anybody for breach of wind, except MS will try though!
The entire arguement got lost on the "real" reason we continue to call it "piracy" in the first place. Let me digress a moment here. I PAID for WIN-98SE, BUT, I want to use it when and where I want, BUT, MS tries to DICTATE to ME, just HOW I "may" use *GAG*their* software...HUH...THEIR software? Hmm, I just PAID good money for MY copy, so how is it still theirs? 5 computers, all sitting in my hom,e 90% of the time....why do they "thisnk" I owe them still more money so I can make "fair use" of my machines with *more* of the same *this program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down* software that is MS? NO, NO, NOPE...no way am I paying good money for SHIT, BUT, since I am NOT reselling thisS garbage for my "personal" profiteering, it is alright to make MANY copies for my OWN machines, never making a buck or two from MS in even the slightest! My copies have taken NOTHING from ANY programmer, his income nor his "potential" income, since I am NOT buying ownership in his life, my "contract" is finished...it ended at the cash register with my purchase of WIN-98SE! Besides, he was already paid for writing that software, so the "lost" revenue/s falls down the embankment and gets run over by a MS truck! I use my single copy, it runs ONLY on one machine at a time, and it is NOT used to make money off of MS either. I can have as many copies on my personal machines as I want, I PAID FOR EVERYTHING, THEY ARE MINE...100%! What transpires behind the hallowed halls of home-academia, is my business alone, and nobody elses! The box does NOT indicate I never really "owned" the box and its contents, if it came inside the box, too bad, you lose, it's a tactic called FRAUD perpetrated against us all by the software companies, they need to reschool their attorneys about hidden clauses, and contracts being purchased without the buyer's consent or knowledge(Try taking that new chainsaw back to whomever and get your money back). No sales receipt, NO MONEY! You *could* have stolen the chainsaw and returned it for money *fraud* again. I was taught that intentionally hiding or denying legal and binding forms of a contractual nature, were both INVALID and ILLEGAL and could NOT be brought to court because the selling party al;one has all the information about the software license and knowingly kept the contents hidden and obscured from the consumer's direct vision, thus hiding the true meaning and intention of the company and their "contract" held against the conumer. Or, does the law protecting the software companies now read: *Ignorance of the software license is no excuse*...Gee, I never knew the law could be applied to corporate america's property?
