    You want a pessimistic futurist? Try reading some of Belyaev's stories. I remember reading one of his stories about the future (2000?), where an artificial island has been built in the Atlantic Ocean, to help aircrafts cover the distance between Europe and America.

    Maybe I'm biased - ok, definitely I'm biased - but this just doesnt feel like "open source" to me so much as "beta-testing with a peek at the code" or, to be blunt, "do our debugging for us."

    We have a term for this already. This is called Crowdsourcing

    Unfortunately I'm responsible for at least half of those....once for each time I've had to re-install.....

    And I'm responsible for none of those despite the fact that I did Linux install 200 million times for the last three years, so we kinda cancel each other out.

    For the same reason that someone who signs a contract without reading it and/or insisting on changes, deserves to be screwed. It's called a manual, it comes with the device, and you are allowed to read it. There is no "deception", only ignorance on the part of the user.

    I really wouldn't say that. Once you've used a browser that renders pages considerably faster than your old browser, there's no going back. It makes a *big* difference.

    Yes, it does makes difference, but on desktop feature set is much more important and there is no way I'm trading NoScript + CookieSafe + Firebug + Foxmarks + Slashdotter for a slight increase in speed.

    From what I've seen the speed rankings in all tests always have Opera and Safari leading with IE and FF being behind.

    Opera aims at different market -- small gadgets. This is where the speed is really critical. For IE and FF good enough is enough, since performance on modern desktops is not that critical.
