For me, if I want a cable, going down to CompUSA and paying $8 and having it in my hand immediately is a no-brainer, compared to having to order it online, pay perhaps a dollar or two less when you factor in shipping, and waiting three days, or going to Best Buy, being assaulted by the noise and idiot salesdroids there, and paying $30 for a sub-$1 part.

Back in the day, like about 10 or so years ago - when Windows 95 and OS/2 were duking it out, you could walk into a CompUSA and pick up 6' printer cables for a mere $1.99. Just a generic cable in a plastic bag hung on a peg with dozens of similar cables for other purposes at similar prices.

I don't consider $8 for a printer cable at CompUSA a big bargain over a $30 cable at Best Buy. Not when a $2 cable did the job.

Since those seasons ended early this year, I watched no TV at all for most of this year until a few weeks ago when BSG season 3 started.

That's when I realized that spending money on a satellite dish was a real waste of money. I shut it off two weeks ago. Even though I was barely using it, it was difficult to get myself to shut it off. As the weeks pass, I am much more comfortable with it.

BitTorrent now supplies my 1-2 hour a week TV habit, at least until the current season of BSG ends. The wife gets her shows from Japan off of Bittorrent. MythTV organizes my media and we all are happy.

disclaimer: No TV at all means nothing broadcast OTA or on satellite. I do watch the occasional DVD, about one or two a month, and also play the occasional videogame.

It was a big issue on the radio here in Los Angeles yesterday. Not the comment, but how the comment was obtained. Essentially:

    1. An anonymous source gives the clip to the Los Angeles Times, which runs with it.
    2. No one is offended except for Schwartzenegger's opponent and a few activists and the Governor apologizes quickly as a form of damage control.
    3. A claim of hacking goes out by the Governator's group and the CHP starts a criminal investigation
    4. The IP address was traced to the opponent's campaign
    5. The opponent's campaign quickly releases an announcement that the clips were obtained legally from links on a public website and names the two people responsible.
    6. The Governor's office said they were on a non-public password-protected area.
    7. The LA Times still refuses to say where the clips came from

The questions that came up was:
If it *was* a link on a public website, why did the LA Times go with the "anonymous" source instead of obtaining the clip themselves? No one at the LAT has a web browser? This is what stinks.

It is certainly possible to get new keys. The reason there is an "urban legend" that it's impossible is because of the dealers - who charge ridiculous amounts to replace said keys: typically $80-$120US.

I find that odd, since key blanks are really cheap. That and the RFID industry is claiming the technology is so cheap they can put these tags on merchandise for mere pennies.

Honda can reprogram the immobilizer system even if you have no keys. It does require the dealer's help - just because they have access to the HDS (Honda Diagnostic System) that is required to perform the task:

    REPLACING ALL PROGRAMMED IGNITION KEYS
If your customer has lost all of the programmed ignition keys, you need to replace all of the keys and rewrite the ECM/PCM with the HDS. The HDS clears all transponder codes from the memory of the ECM/PCM and stores the transponder codes of the replacement ignition keys.

Each manufacturer does this differently, so there are some manufacturers that have immobilizer systems that cannot be reprogrammed without an ECU change if the master/learning key is lost.

Now I didn't read TFA, but if #1 and #2 applied in this case, they would be trumpeting the fact from coast to coast. As far as I can tell, they just threw out the sex offender part just to color public opinion of the "perp". I know they seized his computer and rifled through the contents. If they found anything, the press would know it too. Much like theat guy that was caught a couple years back with a laptop accessing an open AP with his pants around his ankles.

Since the police know he is a sex offender, they know what his conditions of release are and can't seem to find a problem (as of yet). All this guy is guilty of is sitting in a public place accessing free Internet service that a business was supplying (at no charge) to attract customers. If the business really wanted to get rid of his ilk, they could just set up a click-through TOS or use NoCatAuth or some other access control method (like a time-limited passcode on a receipt) that spells out the conditions for use of the network (such as for customers only) and prohibiting unauthorized use - oh, I'm sorry - that requires money and effort.
