How long before they release the "Vista" of CIOS and turn all of their routers and switches into headaches for their base while chasing market share they have no expertise in?
Essentially, individualism vs. socialism. I'll buy that. The big implication everyone is making is that there is nothing to fear. No, I don't want to give up my liberties in exchange for fighting terrorism but I don't want to not fight terrorism either. Pretending there's nothing to fear is a good way to be eaten.
Okay so every public official should turn over their email accounts? or just those our favorite candidate is running against? Or just those we want to believe are conducting business on a private account? If you want disclosure, Dude, that's fine but open them all up. Be prepared for the fallout.
Not really. Yes, the kid is likely brilliant and has a bright future with substantial reward ahead of him. OTOH, starting this young means he'll amass even more geekiness in his lifetime which, though it will garner him continued 7334, it will only further reduce his chances for getting laid.
Such ratings are too subjective. Given people's inclination to label even raw statistics as false or part of some agenda such a "truthfulness" rating would be completely polarizing. A better system would be to use the TLD's more effectively. As has been attempted with the porn industry, blogs and commentary could be segregated or maybe news outlets moved to a.news or something. A thought. I don't know how many times I've gone to Google's news page and seen commentary at the top of the page.
I recall being drilled at one place. I knew the pay would be lower but the idea of being out of work at the start of the dot-com burst was daunting. And who knows? Maybe they had a position that could fit me.
The guy doing the initial interview walked me through their lab. He wanted to know how much I knew about the hardware they worked with. After identifying most of what was there he took me into another lab because as he put it he hadn't "stumped me" yet. After identifying most of the things in that lab I took a test.
After taking the test they brought in 2 guys to stand and read my answers and essentially grade my test with me sitting in a chair before them!
The interviewer was very excited, though, (almost giddy) and said he really hoped they could get me in there.
About a week later I sat with a manager who essentially seemed only concerned with how much I expected to be paid. Ultimately, I was over qualified and even agreeing to meet them in the middle wasn't a low enough salary for them. But I really felt uncomfortable watching my test being vetted.
I could see this in a workplace environment. We use leaderboards to stream data about things like queue information for callers. A manager could have this on their desk and get the same information.
Maybe the problem is until Linux geeks get laid more, they simply won't bother to take time to smell the flowers: i.e. pay any attention to the end-user's experience.
I have a thought! Maybe Mark should be paying hookers!? BRILLIANT!
"Why not? After all, Mac OS itself is based on FreeBSD. Desktop Linux's future is starting to look brighter."
As long as you have people literally in stand-offs against each other based on QT vs. GTK, Gnome vs. KDE, and the merits of this distro over that, then no. It won't become as seemless. Why? Because a lot of good programmers are tied up in projects that simply don't move the ship forward. They only decorate a room on the ship. Hey, I love Linux. Adore it! Maybe the problem is until Linux geeks get laid more, they simply won't bother to take time to smell the flowers: i.e. pay any attention to the end-user's experience.
Let me get this straight: Apple is losing the touchscreen wars in a market they probably have little impact in and a market that has devices that the Euro and American markets will rarely get to see? Someone please, stop the engineers at Apple from leaping from their office windows!
In other news: "American and French woodsmen are falling behind in the burgeoning chopstick market!"
As far as I'm concerned the same thing can be said of religion. Thousands of years ago, before we scientifically understood everything, we had religion to give us an inaccurate but constructive understanding of our world and our existence. However now religion has become obsolete and more accurate and scientific things are taking its place. This is obvious to me. I don't understand why all the Republicans don't get it.
Wow! We understand "everything" now. That's great! And I guess all those Democrat believers get a pass. YOU, Sir, are an idiot. Ironic, actually.
This is bean-counter doomsdayer mentality. These are the same bozo's that try to quantify how much time you spend tuning your radio to a station or watching TV and the like. You can't get that time back. People simply aren't going to sit at a desk and use every second of their work day doing robotic activity, get over it. Humankind has already decided that the benefits of email are viable regardless. People like this either need a life or a place to go that's really quiet so they can count grains of sand in a jar.
Maybe what we really need is a PAC or some sort of lobby. I don't want to pay my dues to some idiot with no neck so he can use my industry as a means of attaining political power. Rather, I need a voice. Collective voice is one thing, a pie-scheme for developing politicians is another.

Should IT Unionize?

Yeah my employer would be pissed as hell if we adopt universal healthcare and take the burden of healthcare negotiations off his back. Boy, that'd piss him off. Healthcare needs better policing not government ownership. As for unions, they're antiquated and are simply avenues of power for a few. All the nice flyers talk about power in numbers but technically its power by numbers and that power funnels to a select few. I as an individual lose my power, value, and influence over my own job to someone I probably will never meet. Oh, and I get to pay for this wonderful arrangement.
So far I'm not impressed and I haven't even installed it. I clicked on the download and saved the installer. However, the installer simply goes out to download the actual browser. This process slammed my CPU so I assume this must be a pretty big package? If the price of speed is bloat I'm not sure I want it.
The problem is we don't have to listen to our enemies now. Look at how polarized the U.S. is politically. The Net isn't bringing people together to learn from each other, it's simply coagulating particles that are attracted to each other. In a sense, it's like a big grid game. We're all building barracks', amassing 'troops', and gathering money.

All move to Microsoft? Better yet start using FreeBSD so we can all be 7334!
As long as my guy wins, who cares right?

Good. Turn over your personal "public" email account and pw to everyone here on Slashdot. What? It's public!

Mine was attempt at humor...a failed attempt, mind you.
Well, verbally!....wait...Textually! :p

I think the word is "libido" and clearly if this type of asteroid were characterized by "high" libido it wouldn't be so rare!

I would think scientists would know how humans "populate." I mean, if they're still stumped on this one, no wonder they don't get laid!

It's "quarky!" It's "quarkalicious!" It's three times the quark of the leading particle!
Let's face it marketing hype and physics just don't mix!
