i went and saw it thinking it would be fun and interesting, instead it was just a pile of bad acting, and even worse fight scenes, and I thought I could never put a movie into that order.

I have used the zone for a very long time, I have also participated in zone tourneys, and promoted the zone as a gaming environment.
The zones move to passport was an incredibly bad move. For one, it does not allow having multiple zone names, the previous one did, and for a gaming environment this is important because many people want to apply unit tags. The old zone system did this very well already and allowed team registration, and changing of names on a whim. This system was better for gaming that the current zone system.
I am in a unique position and am able to get in contect with actual zone techs because I know a couple, and the zone was so buggy with the change that I had to get a total of 3.NET passports before I could get my previous zone name. It took me 2 just to get a zone name, but because of a bug it auto-assigned a random zone name to my account and would not allow me to switch it.
many, many, people have had problem, the zone log in has also experienced problems with the very ability to log in.
For example when you log into the zone right now, you have a "small" chance of actually being able to log in, and when you do successfully log in, because of errors in the page it will log you out if you hit any links, which kind of hurts the ability to play games, for example when I hit submit after creating this post, instead of posting slashdot logged me out... and not only logged me out, but took 4 minutes of stalling your browser to log out. It gets very old, very quick.
The sheer unusable interface, and the fact that all the zone features were previously implemented, and in good working order, the only difference is that you have to have a.NET passport now, there is no added functionality, no added software, just added hassle.

I have a winTV card, this card has a VCR program that lets you save video from your cable in connection to the hard drive, which i have used several times, I have a video out card, which lets me watch it on my TV, and I have it on my hard drive. Is this not constituting the same things that these DVRS do? and other than the fact that you have to have a computer its not that expensive to implement if you use your computer otherwise.
Being an avid slashdot.org reader I generally have not had any real reason to post before, but this one kinda makes me feel the need to post.
The big issues that should really looked at is the type of community as well, and creating good content.
Having run a 10 k a day hit page (it was most of the people that played the game) I can tell you the biggest problems were not with adding fancy links, sounds, hell even interactions. The idea was to keep GOOD, SOLID information. The site I had never varied from the static link (mouse up and down javascript buttons ofc) with text on a basic dynamically created news page, and the use of a generic board called ikon board.
A community page will bring people together simply by providing good solid content, if you are "competing" with someone, then the large issue comes down to reliability, if you are up all the time, and have news related to the communities interests in mind, with enough staff to stay on it and provide interesting commentary, then you will recieve a substantial amount of hits.
One thing many people also fail to realize, and it seems few books cover this, is the fact that you do want personality to the web page, initially you get a few saying that you should not report news with personal opinion interjected, but this is incorrect. They have news sites for that, and news sites, and i mean strictly news sites, do not mean the community is being fostered. When there is a slow time in a community a strictly news site will fail because it has nothing to report, and no creativity to keep itself kicking, a good community oriented site keeps the community together at this time, by providing fun downloads, and screening for quality user created materials, and files, and not just official ones.
A person that can keep a site updated with good, well organized content is going to be around much longer than the really cool looking site that is not updated often.
Oh well, point is, if you want to create a community get good content.
in fact just say this mantra in your head when you are making the site.

and you will do well, and if you have a good goal oriented msg board (similar to ikonboard) and keep good content, with good reviews of the news it will do well.

Hey, just because jewish people have owned the actual land longer in recorded history means nothing. or that they had been living there a very long time until the ottoman empire came along, i think the expulsion of the jews during the ottoman empire was a good thing, the fact that it allowed the time when jewish people reclaimed their land from thousands of years before that they had no right to it, because the turkish empire had decried that right.
I completely agree that even though the ottoman empire (because they supported austrian in ww1) lost there land to the british, who, seeing the two varied populations (remember the jewish had been heavily emigrating BACK to israel there homeland from biblical times since 1880) seperated the land into two portions a palestinian and jewish part.
immediately after official british control in the situation the arab nations of jordan and egypt who controled the west bank and gaza strip respectively (remember palestein hasnt actually existed except for a very very very long time ago) they lost those areas, which allowed the israelis to recapture 85% of the land ceded the british in the defeat of the turks in ww1.
I beleive the genocide of the israeli jewish people should have succeded (since this was the well documented attempt by Jordan, Egypt, and Syria) we would not be having this problem, since there would be no palestien, israel would now be Jordan, and or Jordan, Syria, Egypt division. with no jewish people at all.
I mean if you look at the PLO (or PA) the flag is the same as jordans with the absence of a star, since PLO are actually a jordan faction that were left in israel, and the PLO's whole ideal was to destroy the israelis that were there.
I mean because they are dirty jews we can conveniently forget the fact that jewish and arabic peoples coexisted simultaniously from 1880 to 1946 in peace, and there was no "major" conflict between the two, until the jewish lobbied for an israeli government with the british at the end of ww1.
I cant forgive the stupid dirty jews for defending themselves when it was granted and then captureing strategicly important areas such as the gaza strip and the west bank. And i cant beleive these stupid jews even went so far as put forth a hand recently in being ready to accept the peace by ceding these two areas. Luckily the palestinians havent been swayed by the "peace process" which would allow them to live together in harmony, because they should destroy the jews, and the jews should die because they are illegal and have no right to live in the widely accepted relatively ancient homeland, i mean shit its not like they built jerusalem or anything lol.

The fact that there were palestinian jewish people that lived in israel the entire time also means little, and that these palestinan jews had been there since at "least" 1923 (and been emmigrating to palestinian british territory since 1880) means nothing, because even though there parents, and grandparents had lived in the palestinian district means nothing, the israelis are jewish and thus non-beings. im glad there is someone here with the forsite to realize that living in one place for a long time means you have no claim to it, and that calling yourself a nation of people is illegal because someone else also does. I also think its great that killing people a few at a time is also acceptable, and that retribution killing for such things is also bad as well. Yea, I do not see any correllation between the US destroying the taliban, who flew planes into our buildings, to israelis killing palestinians, i mean palestinians only kill people every day in suicide bombings, but i agree there not americans so when they retaliate with their resources its murder, because god forbid you try to stop terrorism at its source.
Remember, if you only terror bombing 10-15 women and children at a time, for years, its better than doing it in one lump sum against a couple buildings.
i went and saw it thinking it would be fun and interesting, instead it was just a pile of bad acting, and even worse fight scenes, and I thought I could never put a movie into that order. Usually fight scenes are well done, while acting is forgotten, on the Scorpian King they actually went all out and made the entire thing bad. I am a big fan of sword fighting movies, Red Sonja, Conan, unfortunately if you thought the acting was bad in those, you have to see the scorpian king, simply so you will have a new appreciation of just how bad acting can truly be.

actually he probably holds the unpopular opinion that if you cant support your children you shouldnt have any. why would one hold this opinion? think about all the kids being produced that die of starvation. now remember the cost of feeding them. the only way to do so would be to force the haves to give to the have nots, and i dont mean this in a "bad way" i mean that if everyone that "could" provide, were forced to provide for those that could not, then the ones that "could" provide would become slaves to those without, in an odd sort of way. human motivation often comes from struggle to survive, those that can surivive breed. if you give support to those that cant survive, they breed to. feel pity for those in africa, bangladesh, afghanistan, and rightly so. unfortunately, the overpopulation (dirty word here it seems) is not because we want them to go away, its because they simply cant be supported on the land they have. take afghanistan for example, the land itself cant support its population, the problem becomes is are we ethically or morally obligated to give these people food, despite being in a very unfortuatous place? those that wish to survive will move, or the excess population will die off. if your land (where you live) can support 10 million people, and you have 5 million, you cant expect that extra 5 million to live, its just not in the plan that nature has. imagine humans as lynxes, and the land as rabbits, if the lynxes over use the land, then they will have a die back period. by giving food to areas that have overused resources, without any kind of trade (areas like somalia/afghanistan where there is nothing to trade for survival) then the population SHOULD experience a die back period, until it reaches a sustainable level. technology has thwarted this process, that with a moral view that you cant let your fellow humans die, no matter where they live. yes its callous view, and it might very well be wrong, but its not unnatural.
It wont turn it over to artists only, public television, thats exciting, ever watched public television lately? and where exactly are these artists going to get money to create these works of art? there wont be any shreks, no cast aways, no final fantasy the spirits within (ok some we could do without) no movies of any quality because there wont be any money in it, sure you will have good actors bad actors still. you forget the common man, but when this stuff becomes the tool of the common man where will the media get the money to produce these things? they will get payed by citizens to do it for them? bull, you havent read about this little trait in humans, everyone expects everyone else to contribute, if its voluntary, a man can die in the street around 10 people that could save them and none do nothing because they expect the other guy to help. imagine expecting some entrepenuer or other persons to produce content? imagine paying taxes to watch television! lol thats the most moronic thing i have ever heard. artists dont produce movies that people want to see, because good art makes you think, and shows like friends... well that doenst make you think... lol imagine being able to get friends, w/0 commercials because your replay tv that your friend has on his cable connection copied it and you got it from his hard drive because of your 802.11 protocol your sharing in your apartment... sure poor people wont be doing these things, but poor people dont buy the latest peice of crap someone in a commercial is trying to sell you.
Not to insult you, but having worked as a janitor during high school, and in food services in college, I can tell you any idiot can pick up trash, do the dishes. these are unskilled jobs, they are physically demanding but you can get anyone that is not handicapped to do it. the only thing that would stop a non handicapped person is laziness, period. handicapped is - physical deformity, or mentally unable to accomplish a job. in another sense, when i worked as a janitor, i met many many lazy people, they did not hold the job long, and they would be utterly worthless in a job where they had responsibility. and thats another thing, people get paid to program are held responsible to do it correctly, not everyone can program, and even fewer can be given responsibility to program something important. and its not just the ability to have abstract concepts, someone can be very smart but be lazy and lack the ability to hold many responsibilities. our lives without artists and writers would be horribly unfullfilled, these people make things that are creative, i know that is a bit abstract, but they also help foster creativity in others. Books and ideas help spawn more creative solutions to hard problems. A garbage collector is not likely to think of a new way to garbage collect, but a person who can think of a better way to do it should get paid for being creative enough to do so.
I have used the zone for a very long time, I have also participated in zone tourneys, and promoted the zone as a gaming environment. The zones move to passport was an incredibly bad move. For one, it does not allow having multiple zone names, the previous one did, and for a gaming environment this is important because many people want to apply unit tags. The old zone system did this very well already and allowed team registration, and changing of names on a whim. This system was better for gaming that the current zone system. I am in a unique position and am able to get in contect with actual zone techs because I know a couple, and the zone was so buggy with the change that I had to get a total of 3 .NET passports before I could get my previous zone name. It took me 2 just to get a zone name, but because of a bug it auto-assigned a random zone name to my account and would not allow me to switch it.
many, many, people have had problem, the zone log in has also experienced problems with the very ability to log in.
For example when you log into the zone right now, you have a "small" chance of actually being able to log in, and when you do successfully log in, because of errors in the page it will log you out if you hit any links, which kind of hurts the ability to play games, for example when I hit submit after creating this post, instead of posting slashdot logged me out... and not only logged me out, but took 4 minutes of stalling your browser to log out. It gets very old, very quick.
The sheer unusable interface, and the fact that all the zone features were previously implemented, and in good working order, the only difference is that you have to have a .NET passport now, there is no added functionality, no added software, just added hassle.

I have a winTV card, this card has a VCR program that lets you save video from your cable in connection to the hard drive, which i have used several times, I have a video out card, which lets me watch it on my TV, and I have it on my hard drive. Is this not constituting the same things that these DVRS do? and other than the fact that you have to have a computer its not that expensive to implement if you use your computer otherwise.
Being an avid slashdot.org reader I generally have not had any real reason to post before, but this one kinda makes me feel the need to post. The big issues that should really looked at is the type of community as well, and creating good content. Having run a 10 k a day hit page (it was most of the people that played the game) I can tell you the biggest problems were not with adding fancy links, sounds, hell even interactions. The idea was to keep GOOD, SOLID information. The site I had never varied from the static link (mouse up and down javascript buttons ofc) with text on a basic dynamically created news page, and the use of a generic board called ikon board. A community page will bring people together simply by providing good solid content, if you are "competing" with someone, then the large issue comes down to reliability, if you are up all the time, and have news related to the communities interests in mind, with enough staff to stay on it and provide interesting commentary, then you will recieve a substantial amount of hits. One thing many people also fail to realize, and it seems few books cover this, is the fact that you do want personality to the web page, initially you get a few saying that you should not report news with personal opinion interjected, but this is incorrect. They have news sites for that, and news sites, and i mean strictly news sites, do not mean the community is being fostered. When there is a slow time in a community a strictly news site will fail because it has nothing to report, and no creativity to keep itself kicking, a good community oriented site keeps the community together at this time, by providing fun downloads, and screening for quality user created materials, and files, and not just official ones. A person that can keep a site updated with good, well organized content is going to be around much longer than the really cool looking site that is not updated often. Oh well, point is, if you want to create a community get good content. in fact just say this mantra in your head when you are making the site. CONTENT CONTENT CONTENT and you will do well, and if you have a good goal oriented msg board (similar to ikonboard) and keep good content, with good reviews of the news it will do well. (though be prepared to take some flack for your opinions on news, remember if they want news w/o the opinion they can go elsewhere, and thats OK)
