My local cable provider Midcontinent decided that they would assume the repsonsibility of running the cable service in our state since @home won't be able to do so. Then I hear all you guys bitchin about how your service is going down the tubes. It makes me feel special, because I haven't noticed one change. We had the same speed/reliability before it changed to @home, and will have it after it changes to AT&T because the company here maintains all the stuff. Its great.

Holy crap! Pontifex is the BOMB! I didn't even think I was going to want to play it after I downloaded it. That was about 2 hours ago. I've beaten the demo, and tried all kinds of funky shit. Finally got the hang of it (didn't realize it was actually 3d, where you could make beams cross and stuff).

Very neat. Thanks for posting about it.

I've already got the full version of Uplink. Now I need this. Its amazing that these really good games are only $20.

Sure as hell beats going to the store and paying $50 for something that keeps you playing for all of 5 minutes.

Cheap & really good games! Amen!

If it turns to offensive lasers, all the armor will become steel with mirrors on it. There is a cycle that exists. I believe they will come up with all kinds of new technologies, just as they have been doing since prehistoric days. But there have also been and will also be the armor, or defense to every weapon. Sooner or later they're going to have to realize that they can just use OLD techniques that everyone thought was out dated, and no longer had a guard up for. ;P

  13. My father... on Fighting the Scourge of Gaming Addiction · · Score: 1

My very own father had a huge problem with this. Back in the days before AOL went $19.95 unlimited access, they brought out a game called Air Warrior, where you could play with hundreds of other people at the same time. For free.

As the date when AOL would switch to Unlimited Access came closer, my dad was playing Air Warrior more and more, ringing up some rather large bills.

When they finally switched over, my dad became a complete addict. He would sit on the computer for days at a time. He wouldn't talk to us, you had to twist his arm to get him to the dinner table. It was bad, but it only got worse. Soon he stopped going to his job. He was a travelling salesman, so he made the times & dates of his appointments. His usual weekly routine was thrown out the window, and we could barely afford to keep living. Instead he just racked up the credit card bills.

Then he got a new job, and started to kick his habits. We moved to a big city. It seemed the worst had passed. He no longer even wanted to really play, because he knew just how bad it could get. Then one night I was playing the game, and he came home from work, and just sat behind me watching. Then he began to tell me what I should do. He got so into it, I just handed him the controller and said "Here, you play."

He told me no, he didn't want to. But I just walked away anyways. Later on that night I came downstairs to find him once again playing the game. He played it all night. The next morning he had to make a trip across the state, back to our home town. My sister went with him. He was too tired to drive, so he had her drive. The van was overloaded. While he was asleep in the passenger seat with no seatbelt on, and my 14 year old sister (at the time) was driving with almost NO experience. The van's axel broke, and they were thrown from the vehicle. He was crushed by the van and died a few hours later.

Gaming can become a very very serious addiction. Even though I sufferred through my dad's, I have still had game addictions of my own. Though I can seem to somewhat control it because I remember just how bad it can get.

  15. Call me crazy.. on DOJ Already Monitoring Cable Internet Traffic · · Score: 1

But ever since I learned in US History class in 11th grade, that the government can actually strip you of your constitutional rights for the sake of WAR-TIME, I have feared this country EVER going to war.

At the time I figured shit, the US go to war? Bah, we haven't been in a war since I was old enough to remember. But it was a scary thought anyway. Imagine, if they could take away your basic freedoms that were guaranteed to you in the CONSTITUTION, just because the country was at war... that blew my mind.

Then I figured, why would they do such a thing even if we DID go to war? I mean, what good would it do to take away our freedom of speech and whatnot? Nah, they wouldn't do that in these modern times... they have more smarts to go on now, they have more experience under the belt right?

Then again, what if the whole "AT WAR" concept was used, just so they could solve issues that were way too complex or difficult if not impossible to solve by regular ways and means? What if our government went berzerk and decided they were going to use the pretext of WAR after any provocation to do whatever necessary to do things the way they wanted them to be done... no matter at whose expense.. even the the very people they are supposed to be "representing" and governing.

Very scary thoughts indeed. Never thought I would actually have to live them.

The way things are going, I'm planning on getting the fuck out of here whenever the opportunity arrives. I'm not going to stick with a country that just decides that the rules they so strictly enforce on the people, no longer apply to those creating and enforcing them. That's just plain wrong, and idiotic. It cannot work.

One last point about the whole "we're immune to the constitution" attitude. What if the people decided they had had enough of obeying all these pathetic, shitty laws. What if the people rose up and decided they were just as immune to the rules and regulations as those who enact, enforce, & regulate do. What then?

That's quite a bit to think about.

And we as a nation have lots of thinking AND acting to do.

If you don't hear from me ever again, they showed up at my house and made off with my body.
