I'm curious what part of the US you live in. I always assumed that many cities in this country weren't as environmentally conscious as cities I've spent time in (San Francisco, Portland, Boston, even LA). I'm just a little surprised that you're that out of touch to think there aren't places where recycling is just another part of ordinary life.
First, I think the parent had a bit of a whiny tone that made me laugh. However, I also think you could have a little more respect for Mars in it's natural state. There is so much we can learn from or be inspired by.
Sometimes it seems like your half of the human race has this instinctual need to replace all of our precious open spaces with urban sprawl.
Here in Boston, I love moving day. My friends and I rent a uhaul, and blast reggae music through the most horribly worn speakers you can imagine. I swear, certain music just sounds so incredible when it's breaking up like this. I'm not sure if it helps that I already know what the bass 'should' sound like on these recordings (being an audio engineer...I do own a pair of studio monitors).
Why do most of the Mac OS X Gaim clients have such crappy jabber support?
I will never be able convince any of my non-techy friends to use Jabber until there are great clients. And when we're speaking about Yahoo or MSN, most of my friends on these services live in other countries and seem much less internet-savvy than the average college aged american.
I thought somebody should mention that a little city in Peru, called Iquitos (it's in the Amazon basin), used to be the center of the rubber industry. Then somebody smuggled the rubber tree out of the country and the industry moved somewhere cheaper.
It seems to me, Peru is just trying to prevent a similar disaster with their pricey alpaca fleece.
I when I saw "Apple Lossless encoding" a part of me got really excited thinking that they had finally decided to start supporting FLAC files, but just given it their own name.
That doesn't seem to be the case. These files are given the file extension '.m4a'. Attempting to decode them with the CLI flac program only produces errors.
It's a shame too, because FLAC is really starting to pick up as the lossless format of choice for internet distribution. In certain cirlces at least. If Apple had decided to throw their weight behind, it could have really taken off.
But isn't the compulsory license ( 8 cents ) for selling audio recordings?
What were talking about here an advertisement. This is completely different. Apple is required to get a specific license (from Eminem's publisher) to use this composition in an advertisement.
PS: To Slashdot readers:
This has nothing to do with sampling. Sampling implies the use of an audio recording (in a derivative work). Audio recordings use a completely different copyright.
In this case, the copyright being violated is the right to perform Eminem's composition. This money gets split between Eminem and his publisher (the record company never touches any of it).
If you're a trumpet player, at that level, you'll probably have to put in at least another 2-3 hours EVERY DAY just to keep your lip muscles in conditioned. As a trumpet player, I know...missing just one day, feels like you missed half a week.
Everyone's talking about old school atari, I'm with but.....
....San Francisco Rush 2049 is probably my favorite arcade game out there today. It's sucks that it always costs 3 quarters (it's hard to get used to today's prices), but that sub woofer under the seat is soooo nice.
I think this game is the best of all current racers.
One of the key points about 10.2 is that you're supposed to be able to use any audio hardware with any other audio software (or did I hear wrong?)
You're supposed to be able to use any audio hardware that has 'core-audio' drivers with any audio software that supports 'core-audio'.
Now, if Digi doesn't make 'core-audio' drivers for their hardware, their hardware won't work with other applications. For example, in OS9, digi didn't provide ASIO drivers for the digi001. Luckily, somebody else did (I think it was steinberg).
On the otherside of the coin, I think Digi can decide not to go through 'core-audio' and to only support it's proprietary audio interfaces. I hope they don't do this...but then, selling audio interfaces is how they make money.
The Germans and IBM have a good business relationship already established.
It seems to me that this may actually be bad news to those hopefull for an open source victory. Their partnership didn't help the Germans out too much last time. Let's hope they get it right this time.
I like this line, "IBM technology put the blitz into the blitzkrieg."
I thought the big excitement was support for EXIF data. (Kind of like ID3 tags for photos.) That seems more like the kind of thing that would excite slashdotters than an apple script to email a photo.
What I still don't understand, is why iPhoto has to copy my photos into it's own special directory. Wouldn't it make more sense to treat photos the same way that iTunes treats mp3s, as in leaving them where they sit in the filesystem.
So...my iChat IM address is going to be p940e@mac.com (same as my iTools account), right?? That looks like it would be pretty compatible with Jabber. I wonder...
is Apple using Jabber to power this chat service (probably too much to hope for) or
will there at least be a Jabber gateway that will allow @mac.com users to communicate with @jabber.org, @jabber.com, or @any.jabber.server??
Please Apple, do for open IM what you did for USB.
Yo....at Berklee college of music we use only macs for production/composition and stuff. Berklee alumni account for a good chunk of the music industry and it's 'release quality music.' Go pick up a 'keyboard player' or 'electronic musician' magazine. See how many artists are using macs (often with Digital Performer and or Pro Tools).

I've definitely been using it just fine with Camino.

Maybe uhaul should get collaborate with this guy.
