Choices, choices. Choice is good! But trying to support every competing sound system is not the way to provide it. At last count, there were SEVEN different sound systems available on my system, and none of my applications supports more than two or three. If we ever want to see Linux become a target for commercial software development (read: games), then we need to standardize the available APIs. The leading distros each need to pick ONE sound system and bundle only applications that support that sound system. And may the best distro win.
Here in Oregon, at least, most of our electricity already comes from hydropower. But even if that were not the case, electric transportation still does good things for the environment. It shifts pollution away from population centers, potentially reducing the short-term health impact. It prepares consumers for accepting lighter, more efficient vehicles. And most importantly, limited adoption by forward-thinking consumers is the first step toward cracking the Catch-22 of not having the infrastructure in place to support electric vehicles. Nobody's going to have a financial incentive to build those green power plants and electric "gas stations" until there's a significant demand. And as an employee of a shop that primarily sells electric bikes and scooters, I'm glad to say that demand is soaring. Progressive cities like Portland are creating the markets that are going to change the world.

When I was a kid, I used to check out awesome chemistry books from the county library that showed how to make your own fireworks, how to distill perfume essences from flowers, how to produce biogas from sawdust, how to make dyes, and many more potentially dangerous things. Go back another generation, and you have Mr. Wizard teaching kids how to build thermobaric bombs out of a paint can and a garden hose... and setting the thing off with the kid standing by in absolutely no PPE, not even goggles.

One thing that particularly struck me is that it tends to be males who either raise or lower racial averages, and that either way, it's exceptional outliers who swing the average, not the majority closer to the mean. In other words (and I choose this as an example because it was mostly blacks who raised hell about the book) there really is no "unexplained" 14 IQ points or whatever between the average black and the average white. The median and the trimmed mean for blacks and whites are about the same. It's just a handful of exceptionally stupid black males who swing the mean for the entire race.

For example, I could probably build a jet bomber. I know the theory behind jet engines. I know a little about aerodynamics, fabrication, welding, electronics, and the physics of aiming an aerial bomb. Whatever I don't know, I know how to look up. But building it would take a long time, cost a lot of money, involve a lot of trial-and-error, and the end result would be an impractical piece of junk compared to any real military aircraft. Same goes for building a nuclear weapon, only times ten.
Still, I could probably do some damage with my garage bomber, if only by crashing it. And that's what has the IAEA worried.
