  1. What bunch of complete nonsense on Generation Wrecked · · Score: 1

I am right now, in the worst economy in a decade, enjoying the highest salary and best job I have had since I got out of college with a measley undergrad.

Since getting out of college, I have had 4 jobs in three years...3 by choice, 1 layoff. But the layoff doesn't really count because it happened in 99 and was the result of management being so stupid, even a green just-out-of-school-twit like myself questioned their basic business principles.

If you sell yourself short and walk around with your head up your ass feeling sorry about yourself because you are 28 and don't drive a Ferrari, you are an idiot.

Now, will I be better off than my parents? Yep. Wanna know how I know that? Because I know-not guess, not think-but know that I will. I werk my ass off and I am rewarded for it.

I spent a year at a company full of losers who thought that the only way they could ever be financially successful was to win the lottery. Hey slick, the lottery is a tax for people who are bad at math.

If you want something bad enough, and you find the right place to be in your life, you will achieve anything you want.

  2. SouthEast Toastosity on UUNET/WorldCom Backbone Diffiiculties · · Score: 1

I have been completely down for over 5 hours now. Things look like they are back, but this actually started as intermittent outages around 6:30am EST. There was a scheduled maintenence window this morning. I think the upgrade thoery holds quite a bit of water.

  3. Michio Kaku on Physics Books for the Novice? · · Score: 1

I have read everything he has written except the textbooks. Hyperspace and Visions will give you a very low level intro to quantum mechanics, chaos and various other mind bending topics.

From there you might try "In Search of Schrodenger's Cat". I can't think of the author offhand but Amazon is sure to have it.

  4. Was 1 of 2 languages at my school on Is FORTRAN Still Kicking? · · Score: 1

FORTRAN was one of the two languages taught at my college when I was there, and up until 1998, it was the primary focus next to COBOL.
There were a lot of local businesses that still used it in some form of another. Both of these in the government sector (defense and insurance).
I guess it's hard to kill that kind of language when the primary machines you have still depend on it for survival.

  5. Surfing at 80 on HighWLAN · · Score: 1

This is the niftiest thing I have ever seen.
I'm going to try this on my next roadtrip. I keep my NB plugged into the car when I do my daily 32 mile commute. It's a nice way to pass the time in brutal afternoon traffic.

  6. Pain in the Nix on A Linux User Goes Back · · Score: 4, Insightful

I just bought a mac. Until now I have always wondered what it was exactly that Apple brought to the table. Until OS-X it just wasn't worth it, but now... I don't even bring the WinXP notebook home anymore and my Win2000 machine has become a big chunk of DASD on my network.
Sure, I tried Redhat and Caldera. They are nice, but Apple got it right. Unix stability with a beutiful GUI. Unless there are drastic changes to XP, I have no doubt that my next purchase will be a Mac.
Go buy a Mac. Nix on the desktop is wonderful.

  7. OS BMW on Proposed Law To Open Code ... In Cars · · Score: 1

I have a BMW and was floored to learn that the local mechanic Bubba could purchase software from BMW USA and hook his laptop right into my M3.
According to him, BMW was one of the first car companies to allow third party shops access to their diagnostic software. While I'm sure it's not cheap, it is a good way to transfer knowledge into a different busniess sector. Most of Bubba's clients are BMW fanatics who want to squeeze every ounce of horsepower out of their little German bathtubs. I think it's a good niche.

  8. Compuplus on Home-Built vs. Store-Bought PCs · · Score: 1

I have been using these guys for 3 years. Good prices and you can call them and place orders over the phone!

  9. Government Nonsense on Yet Another "Last Mile" Option · · Score: 1

Not be completely negative, but this is true government vapor. It will take 10 years at least to get this into the private sector. I guess maybe by then the hardware won't be so flaky, complicated and expensive.

  10. I heart Toshiba?!? on Comparative Laptop Reviews? · · Score: 1, Informative

Just got a new Tecra 9000. CD-R/DVD, 1GB RAM and a 1.2GHZ processor. I love it. Using XP and RedHat and both work flawlessly.

Pretty solid bang for the buck...

  11. Portable Caldera on Linux Laptop Recommendations for 2002? · · Score: 1

About a year ago I installed Caldera's E-Desktop (current version at the time) and had everything working but the sound on a Toshiba Satellite 3545CDS. 350MHZ AMD K-6, 32MB RAM. Was slow but it all worked quite well.

  12. Not that bad on The Laid-off Techie · · Score: 1

Things here in the southeastern US are still moving along quite nicely. The industry seems to have taken a hit, but appears to be on the rebound. My former DotCom is still plugging along (and yes in the black), and even handed out bonuses. The rash of recruiters that used to call is over, but I still get hits on my doc from time to time. Programming and DBA are still the hot ones, but there is plenty of work out there for someone who is willing to put forth the effort.
    My 2...
