    Is that a US centric view? We all know that RH is the top US brand but Mandrake has been the TOP World brand for a very long time. Have a look at distrowatch.com. See the page ranking half way down on the left column. Look at all the data span options. Mandrake has loads of packages and if you attach to the PLF repository you'll get all the packages that mandrake doesn't include for image/legal reasons. (P2P, stronger encryption, special DVD tools...)

    PS Ubuntu has taken #1 in the last month by a small margin. give it a few weeks to see if this is a fad.
    Also, I tend to be US centric myself since I live here.

    I work for a $20B Corporation that has 40 Suse servers and keeps adding more. Just tell the boss it's "Novell". Your not exactly lying. How the hell would a PHB ever know the difference. All "Command Prompts" look the same, right? :)

    Just replace /root/.icewm/toolbar/linux.png
    with /root/.icewm/toolbar/red-N.png

    Don't worry, "THEY" will not notice the story because you can't find it on the front page. It's buried where no one can find it. I looked. It's all part of the grand scheme. There is news about linux if you specifically look for it but for the general masses the news stays out of site. It's a trick that makes you think linux is in the news when on the grander scale it's not.

    Checkfree? It's a browser based bill pay.
    Not sure if it will cover all your needs. I just use a combination of checkfree, autopay and a spreadsheet based register (OpenOffice Calc). You can do this for free on any OS. I find Gnucash hard to use and I imagine Quicken not to be much different. A spreadsheet is much more free form and forgiving.

    The GPL is not for you. It is also not for M$.
    RTFL (read the fucking license) before you use it.

    also, you can write and release proprietary code that runs on GPL'ed OS's. You just need to know how to do it. Try googling. Try not speading FUD and ignorance about the subject.

    It's not about charity. It's about sharing, co-developement, openness and educating. M$ doesn't share back so they are not worth sharing with. M$ has their thing and we have ours. .... and we are OK with that.

    There is a huge mass of folks who have never heard of Linux, BSD or GPL. As Linux goes mainstream, It's ideology needs to be transfered as well. The people need to know what they are choosing and why. It's about brand awareness and training.
    BSD= Helping the M$ monopoly.
    GPL= Leaving the M$ monopoly in the dust.

    You know this and I know this. Now the public must be made aware.:)

    BSD is only as strong as BSD

    M$ is as strong as M$+BSD

    Yet M$ will lock you into proprietary formats and costly contracts. Why would you want to share the peoples good nature with the likes of M$?



    Any Open Source Definition-compliant license guarantees that the covered code will, always and forever, be freely available for all to use, modify, and redistribute.



    And will be availible for M$ to use unless it's GPL. I say use GLP to slow down the Monopolistic Pig.

    Thanks for pointing out the problem. The BSD one way street allows CorpX to copy code and compete with BSDx. Yet BSDx can't copy code back from CorpX. BSD Is not mutual and not fair to the BSD programmer even if he is a closet microsoft fan *cough*. With the GPL you shall give back to the community which you take from. Only the greed driven corporations will try to convince the gulible that the BSD and CDDL licenses are OK. If they want to live in the proprietary world they need to stay in the proprietary world. No ONE-WAY leeches here!

    Total Bullshit. This is just a cheap move (actually a billion dollar move) to dilute GNU/linux paid for by Microsoft. Your part of the problem, not the solution. We must keep the code open and we must keep it out of Microsofts hands.
    Say no to CDDL'ed Solaris, Say no to Microsoft. GNU/Linux is the peoples code.

    I second that. As a +5 year linux user that does not program but creates occasional art for kde-look.org, I will not try BSD because I understand the difference in the license. Users do care because we want things to stay open.

    It may not have started out as a war but Microsoft thinks it's a war. They are deploying The SCO Group and Get The Facts and various other weapons. Bill is angry. The Linux folks are just watching with a grin as microsoft wastes time and money trying to avoid the future. We are having fun. :)

    Also, Bill declared linux as the biggest threat. Next, He removed linux from the list because he realized he was validating linux by putting it at number 1. He is using reverse psychology and propaganda to fight a cold war plus he is literally fighting it. It's not our fault.

    I believe it is being shunned because of the license. The GPL folks don't want their code being stolen by commercial interests without proper recognition and proper sharing(give back to the community). The BSD license allows the greedy to virtually steel and covet your code when it suits them. We can't win a war that way. :)
    Linux is winning the popularity contest via the GLP, no?

    I guess it depends on your line of work. For me it is gear trains, Tach pulses and Rubber coated drive wheels. For instance, printers and bill acceptors. We need to know the distance an object has traversed, or its length, given a number of tach pulses collect while the object passes a sensor. This is the only time I need to use Pi.

    Thanks, but I have no idea how many decimal places qualify as "considerable". I'm less interested in who and more interested in how many decimal places are "just enough" to get the job done.

    Problem with installing flash on linux is that you now have to deal animated adverts. I don't mind ads but don't wiggle or pop up or walk across my screen when I'm trying to read. I don't care what you do to those windows shleps, don't do it to me. :)

    I use pie all the time in an Engineering lab. typically out to 3 or 4 decimals. Does anyone NEED to use PI to a greater level of accuracy? If so, what application and how many decimal places do you require?

    My mom has been using Mandrake for a year. She plays games and uses dial-up to surf. I had to switch her from Windows after all the spyware problems. What a fricken mess you can get into with windows.
    I've used Mandrake for 4 years. I do not have a windows pc and I play UT2004 all the time. I have files on my pc from 1997(new PC, good backup plan). In all of my experience, I continue to say that Windows is NOT ready for the internet. Linux was built for the internet and is ready for the desktop.

    Every Linux install leaves you with $200 or more to spend on something meaningful instead of giving it to Bill. For instance, I gave $250 for tsunami relief this year and I volunteer for the American Heart Association. I also donated to groklaw and the firefox ad. Just because I'm a linux user doesn't mean I'm always cheap.
