Why would anyone be ashamed of dumpster diving? It should be formally organised as a way of re-using (instead of just recycling or trashing) equipment and materials. The planet has enough toxic waste dumps already.
What a load of BS. Apple do not have a monopoly on portable music players or music downloads by any stretch. You can even use iTunes to download DRM-free songs and use them on a non-Apple music player, imagine that!
The amount of insane zealotry in some posts is just unbelievable.
I agree with you, iTunes and Steam are restrictive and bad in principle, yet I still use them, and many people still use them. With Steam in particular, it's the convenience factor, as well as the generous discounts they tend to have during sale periods. I hope another PC games store with an extensive selection of titles can come along which doesn't use DRM, but I don't think it's going to happen anytime soon.
I really like gog.com, but that's for old games and I don't think many publishers of new games would be willing to risk DRM-less distribution.
I was an Apple hater as well. Back in my high school days, it was cool to hate "Crapples"... schools were littered with old and semi-working Apple computers. Doing industrial experience work during uni, I had to work with fruit iMacs running OS8 and OS9 -- hated it, it was as unstable and crashy as Windows 98.
Finally in 2003, my interest was piqued in Mac OS X. More and more of the web design/development community were switching to Macs, and I liked the elegance of the new OS. I bought an iBook G3 and have been hooked ever since.
I don't see Apple's behaviour as having changed at all in the last few years. They've always been fairly closed, secretive and controlling, because that is Steve Jobs' perfectionist mindset -- for better or worse. I don't subscribe to the "cult" view of Apple, but there's no doubt that Steve is in charge.
If anything, in my eye Apple's build quality and value for money has gotten better over the years.
I'm a web developer as well, but the kind of money being thrown around is not surprising. A lot of big government/commercial web projects cost that much. And you're right, obviously hardly any of it goes to the actual people doing the hard work.
Agreed, Microsoft are like Adobe, they have a love/hate relationship with warez pirates. Adobe actually tolerates piracy to a certain degree, as long as you buy licenses if you do commercial work. When it comes to personal use and learning their products at home, they tend to turn a blind eye. It's good business sense.
What sites are you visiting? If you're getting malware/trojans, it's because you're visiting the sites of spammers/scammers who just happen to be offering hacked versions of other people's cracks as a come-on, much like some fake porn sites. Their sole aim is to rip people off and make money.
Real hackers/crackers don't put trojans and viruses in their releases, obviously.

Splendidly said. A hat tip to you, good sir/madam.
Come back two years later and we'll see. Apple is doing very well because, as always, they make things much more easy and user-friendly for the customer. I know it's trendy on Slashdot to bash Apple as "overhyped" and superficial and marketing-driven, but in reality they often make the most well-designed and engineered products on the market. People buy Apple gear because it works really well for the average person.
Unfortunately the "superior" types who look down on everyday people as sheeple and lusers can't factor this into their narrow worldview. Sour grapes and all that.
Which iPhone do you have? Supposedly the 3GS is a little snappier, but I have an original 1st gen iPhone and I've never noticed any kind of annoying delay. Are you talking about app loading times?
Exactly. Apple has never gotten a free pass on Slashdot, but that doesn't stop people from claiming that (and at the same time getting modded +5 without fail).
Nobody is expressing shock that some asshole had to insult the happy couple on the Internets. IANAAC was just putting the AC in his rightful place. Equal opportunity freedom of expression and all that.
Just because the police force is one of the best doesn't mean they don't deploy agent provocateurs.
I'm pro-police most of the time. I fully support their actions in fighting crime in the community. But most police forces are way too heavy handed against peaceful protestors. If the protest is peaceful but politically charged, the higher-ups deem it necessary to break it up by any means necessary.

Very well said.

Do you have any evidence for your conspiracy theory about Apple buying up all the 1.5" HDDs on the market?
Maybe I'm missing something obvious, but why do you say that the iTunes store means the end of the bargain bin for 2nd hand songs?

"Apple sucks" and "Apple worse than Microsoft" = guaranteed mod points.
So how is Apple worse than Microsoft exactly?
Well said. OP creates a nice little strawman to justify his hate.
There's plenty of valid reasons to dislike Apple, but his reasons weren't it.

It really is the best OS for creative types.

We'll see how long that lasts. I'm sure Microsoft is rushing even now to follow suit and build their own app store for Windows Mobile devices...

Agreed, I love their MLK song.
It's his house, why wouldn't he take the package inside after he discovers it on his front porch?

On a related note, you must be fun at parties!
That's what I was thinking. You'd have civilians arresting and subduing plainclothes police officers.

The police also tend to wear masks to hide their identity.
Sometimes they even take off their name badges, which is clearly illegal, but they never get punished for that.
