Hmmmm good point, I'd always thought it was no big deal myself, but never thought of them completely dumping XP and reassigning reg codes for it. Of course someone will always have a hack for it, but still a good point.
Wait did you hear that?? That was the sound of a few million eyes rolling!
If they don't want people linking then they'll just have to password protect their site or something...oh wait that makes it hard for people to get there doesn't it?
Ugh, how could they do this? I played EQ on and off for two years and had planned to go back for another around for SoL, and from the sounds of things it's a total disaster. Well I can wait for now and tool around with my Shadowblade in Dark Age of Camelot for now. SoL sounded like it had such potential though...
...what is the purpose of this article? It just seems to go on and on. Who is this JonKatz guy anyways? I've flicked through Slashdot before a few times before actually getting an account, and have seen one or two articles before. They just seem to be pointless semi-rants or something.
They remind me of some of the crap I'd write in my college days at 2:00am when I had to fill ten pages with something before handing in the paper.
Had some interesting little tidbits- but it was like he tried to rush that article in a day or something, the history of video games had huge holes in it.
And the hardware is somewhat irrelevant at this point I think- it's all about the games that are available! Playstation2 is the clear winner this year- though it did have a head start. X-Box though just has so much power and potential- it'll be interesting to see what comes out this time next year for it. Nintendo- well Nintendo is Nintendo and they just go and do their thing and sell millions of units almost apart from what everyone else is doing- as long as they keep their strong branding to kids they will happily suck up the cash.
Yeah 3DO actually lasted me a little while...SC2 was such a great game! Ah well I think they sort of fell between the cracks tech wise (wasn't really quite up to high powered 3D) and just never caught on (Atari Jaguar was another half-assed step). Though there were some fine 3DO games:
Star Control 2: great game single & multiplayer
Killing Time: neat little FPS
Slayer: randomized D&D dungeon call in 3D- not bad for a play now and again
3D Heli Backpack game: name elludes me
PO'D: it had mobs that shot poo at you
Cyberspace game RPG/Action: another name lost hehe
Samurai Shodown: was a perfect port of SS...good enough that I was able to ditch the ol NeoGeo (now there was an odd system- $250 games! I got mine used with SS and some golf game but could never afford to buy new games for it!)
Hopefully one day we will all be able to just run IPv6 and have arbitrary connections to each other on a neighbourhood basis, be it our own cables between houses or some newer high speed wireless system (like 802.11b only with more bandwidth) creating a true decentralized Internet. Of course the big problem will always be the long distance runs with the big fat pipes- other than this we could probably do everything without the huge ISPs couldn't we?
Just dreaming right now of course- but wouldn't be nice not to have to rely on big companies like AT&T or whoever? Heck once something like that became pervasive enough - we wouldn't need them for phone calls either! I'm sure many people (myself included) would opt for TV service be it cable or Satellite- but at least having TV is not a necessity like communicating is!
Hmmm good point- is it really that hard for me to enter my info for each site, if not for each purchase? I guess it's the old security vs. usability thing- though security is probably the better way to go with all the info needed to charge your CC!
That reminds me, I *really* have to get a new low limit CC just for web purchases..
It sounds like the Liberty Alliance is trying to create a set of common standards and not, as many people are freaking over, a second centralized database.
If they can come up with a decentralized yet intercompatible way of authentication then they might be on to something positive! Anything that can be done to prevent a Microsoft having a total strangle hold with.NET is a good thing I think.
I've always found it interesting how narrow an understanding we really have of the universe...seems like as we go to the very large or the very small; like outside of our typical day to day world our theories start to break down and reality as we are used to it seems to change.
Neat stuff.
(oh and of course this will all result in the Earth being shrunk into something roughly the size of a pea...)

That's pretty entertaining stuff!

Hehe funny stuff anyways.

Pretty much anything has the potential to be addictive- "everything in moderation" is the key I think!
