So what if there's a MSLinux with proprietry hooks so that.Net only works on that platform. How the hell is that different to what we've got now with Windows?
MSLinux CAN'T subvert Linux, BSD, etc. BECAUSE THEY'RE FREE. If you don't like what MS (theoretically) do in the future, roll your own distribution and set up in competition.
Why would Apple want to release a PC version? As has been regurgitated untold times here and other places, Apple make lots of money selling hardware, and I would imagine that the majority of people buying it are buying it for the ability to run MacOS. If this was available on PC's then it would kill Apples hardware sales.
Vitaminic is not too bad. I've had much more sucesss (as in downloads) from there than both Mp3.com and iuma put together, with virtually no promotion.

Excuse my ignorance on the subject, but are the specs for the Java VM availabile, and if so, what's to stop anyone (with a lot of spare time on their hands!) writing a compiler for any old language that compiles into Java bytecode?

If they were as fanatical as the GNU lot, then they would have released under GPL.
Also, how can they 'rape' BSD? How on earth will anything that they do influence in the slightest FreeBSD etc.
