So people, why did it fail and what lessons can we learn from it?
I did actually get to use a Next box at the time, and I've still got fond memory's of it, but it goes to show that we need more than "cool tech" and a good UI to suceed.
Ever heard of using the right tool for the job? There's a whole load of operating systems out there and, shock horror, for some situations it makes sense to use a MS operating system. I know, I'd better be wearing my asbestos flame suit, but Linux isn't the cure for everything.
The whole point is that there are a lot of legacy systems around, COBOL, FORTRAN, whatever and there is a lot of work going on at the moment "web-enabling" all of these old Big-Iron systems. I have to say that M$.NET isn't revolutionary in this respect, because this is something that is already happening.
Look at sites like peacefire.org. The problem with the censoring software is that it plain doesn't work. It lets through porn and censors sites that aren't. It's snake oil for the internet age.
I'm sorry, if you can't manage to drink a cup of coffee without 3rd degree burns then that makes you stupid in my book.
How much intelligence does it take to look at it, see it's still boiling and think 'Ohh, thats still a bit hot, I'd better leave it for a minute.', or take a tiny sip and come to the same conclusions?
For god's sake, these people that have so much trouble with coffee shouldn't be out in public in my opinion.
Errr, a trade embargo? EU policy not to use MS software, punative fines for all MS in Europe offices, it goes on and on.
"Why should Microsoft even have to listen to foreign laws that dont apply to the US?"
If they want to come here and take our money then they have to play by our rules, simple as that. If they don't want to listen to those damn foreigners than stay at home.
Good Quality software products? Ex-squeese me? Which ones? Alright, admittedly some stuff is good IE5 springs to mind, but that's not what made them. Can you remember what it was? That's right a BASIC interpreter and an operating system MSDOS(originally called Q-DOS, quick and dirty operating system) which was at best a CP/M clone. And even out of those the only one written by MS was the BASIC interpreter, (now that's innovation).
Poor old Microsoft, my heart bleed's for them. Do yourself a favor, dig a bit deeper than Microsoft press releases when learning history and find out exactly how they got where they are. EEE.
This was on memepool the other day and even then there was a message on their site saying that they were suffering under the pressure. The server probably blew up when it was posted here.
So, release your s/w with whatever licence you like, dipshit. I'm sure everyone else will do the same. Oh sorry, I forgot, you don't do anything else apart from post the same damn message to Slashdot continuously. Knob-rot.
Piss off. No-one wants to hear your crap, it's not funny. Why don't you put it on your own web-site and see how many people read it because they want to. I'd be suprised if it was more than 1.
GIF is a patented format (owned by Unisys as I remember). Therefore you have to have a license to use it. The much better (free-er) alternative is PNG.
I would post links, but you can use a search engine as well as I can, and I'm feeling lazy.
I couldn't see any mention of opening the SCO source in the press-release, did anyone else or does anyone else know? All I could see was some weird Unix/Linux Open Internet mixture type thing.
He still didn't get it, Street Lawyer, I take my hat off to you sir. This is one of the funniest things that I have ever seen on Slashdot ! So many people falling for it as well, it really proves your point. Congratulations.
It's ironic that people rush to denigrate other countries for being backwards or stupid and end up sounding like some sort of idiot themselves.

With closed-source clients how do we know what they're ACTUALLY doing with our CPU time?

You'd have to change the whole infrastructure overnight. It will never happen.

Fuck, that must have taken you weeks to think up. Now try having an original thought.
When the only tool that you've got is linux, every problem looks like a Beowolf cluster...
Could you imagine a world where different parts are in different time zones?

You been thinking that one up for hours? And that's the best you could come up with? You are truely lame.
I fully agree with you. Why doesn't the slashdot crew do this? The social experiment is over. It didn't work.
Piss Off you idiot. Have you nothing better to do?

It pulls in Suckers everyday and they still don't realise they're being wound up. Amazing.
It's OK, Judgement Day has passed. What was it? August something 1997.

If you're looking for deep philosophical (sp) discourse, you've come to the wrong place matey.
Here's the Registers' take on it, raises interesting points on it being a counter to .NET
