Remember that Apple is all about visual appeal. If OS X looked like KDE or BeOS did, nobody would even care that it existed. Unfortnuately, to achieve that visual appeal, insane amounts of processing power are required, and as of right now the only chip that can deliver is the G4 w/Altivec.

Don't believe that it's altivec that makes the difference? Get a Mac with a G3 and another with a G4 at the same speed and I think you will find that the G4 runs much, much more smoothly than the G3 does.

  3. Re:Wouldn't be the same on Cringely: OS X on Intel · · Score: 1

OS X's visual interface is tuned to run on the G4 chip. Highly tuned. The fastest Intel or AMD processor would choke trying to handle aqua as it is. It would require a full rework of the entire system to get it to run at an acceptable speed on x86 chips. A 2ghz Intel chip is only about 1/2 as fast as a 500mhz G4 executing Altivec optimized instructions.

Your kidding, right? The only app that microsoft has for Apple is the Office suite and internet explorer. Apples creative apps come from companies such as Macromedia, Adobe, Procreate, and Apple itself, just to name a few. Not to mention that Apple has its own Office suite, Appleworks, that is more than adequate for most users and is compatible with Microsoft Office.

rather than communicate all world changes to all the clients, only communicate changes to the clients that are within their "scope" of the game. this will keep network usage down, and system load on both the clients and the server down.

Naturally, this model might not work depending on the type of game you are designing, but generally for MMORPG's, you should be good.

Ever opened up a Power Mac G4? It makes PC cases look like total crap. One latch on the side and the case swings open, with flat-out easy (literally) access to the mainboard, and open access to all the drives and power supply. Not to mention that the cables come secured to the sides of the case from the factory, so you don't have to work around them.

The altivec engine (which is what gives the G4 its juice) can crunch out tons of operations at rediculous speeds. The problem with this is, if the programs are specifically optimized to take advantage of these engines, then the program will run like it would on a fast G3. However, when a program (like Maya or Photoshop or Cleaner or many others) is optimised for Altivec and DP, it **blows away** anything else in it's price range. Still, If I were doing serious 3D work, I would be doing it on the SGI for all of the reasons (besides the senseless G4 bashing) above.

Let me just make a point that an Apple Logic Board (motherboard for all you PC users) is by *no means* the same as a PC one. It is entirely designed in house by Apple; and this added quality is refelected in the price. A replacement apple logic board for a uni-north new-world class computer (on its own, no processors, ram, etc.) can cost upwards of $800!
