  1. backmasking? on Japan's Melody Roads Play Music as You Drive · · Score: 1

If you drive backwards, can you hear Satan's voice?

Or is it just country/western tunes, where you get your dog back....

  2. cannibalism on The Wii - Is the Magic Gone? · · Score: 1

What's the point of such a deconstructive post? The "all for nothing" tone is quite different from the article's optimistic "just wait and see" attitude. I agree that Nintendo's supply problems have been disappointing, but its competitors are 3x the cost (PS3) or not exactly revolutionary (xbox360). They're forcing the gaming industry to rethink itself, and that's worth waiting for.

  5. Rebate?? on Apple Dumps Most of Aperture Dev. Team · · Score: 5, Funny

Apple is rebating for software already sold, because it isn't good enough for their standards? My god, what would happen if Microsoft had to live by these standards?

  8. Re:Should MSN obey the law? on Microsoft Censors Chinese Blogger · · Score: 1

    > riddle me this caspian, what makes a law immoral? who is the judge?

It is the duty of every thinking person to decide whether a law is immoral. It is in line with the [only] true strength of a democratic system: the ability to freely debate and either reinforce or tear down policy.

I think the measure of the rightness of this action is this: what are the consequences to Microsoft if they fail to comply with the Chinese government's demands? As I understand, the response would be economic: reducing Microsoft's role and influence in an expanding economy, perhaps a preference for competitors' products. So, the question is whether Microsoft is correct to help the Chinese government silence political opposition in return for money.

THAT is where the immorality lies. There is lasting controversy about World War 2 and the Swiss Bank's cooperation with the Nazi regime, about American weapons traders selling arms to weapons-soaked civil war zones, about the UN oil-for-food scandal; the question boils down to selling out human principles for cash.

  10. Air Force "turf" on The New Air Force Mission? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Charging the Air Force with this one makes sense - for now. USAF is our "networked" armed force - primarily aviation-related missions, but the AF culture thinks in terms of an enemy distributed functionally and/or geographically. They're also the most technology-friendly branch, inherent to the type of work they do.

As far as letting CIA/NSA run this, you don't want an intelligence agency conducting offensive missions. Period. Yes, they're doing that now, but we already have huge oversight problems of intel groups (even the budget total is classified).

Besides, the Air Force is the US's "standoff" branch. They can attack, cause mayhem, destroy and kill - but air power and cyberwar are both constrained by the fact that they cannot singly defeat an enemy. Both roles are support for another effort, be it political or on-the-ground military. The fact of jointness enjoyed by US commanders makes this seem like a natural fit.

  11. Global connectivity? on How Things Will Change Under IPv6 · · Score: 1

Err - how is an expansion of IP space going to bring a net free of government speech controls (not to mention physical connections) to parts of the world that are resisting? We can't even pry those things out of the hands of the US Government, much less those of Robert Mugabe or Iraq.

  13. property crimes on Congress Declares War on File Leakers · · Score: 2, Insightful

Maybe it's important to notice a general trend in society: the growing emphasis on prosecution of property crimes, ie theft, vandalism, etc. The fact that sentences for all property offenses are growing more than any other type is alarming, and is happening not just in the "crime" of file-trading. Doesn't this reflect a broader trend towards corporate control of governments?

  16. Modem dialers? on What VoIP Is Actually Good For · · Score: 1

VOIP by itself isn't making modem dialing obsolete - most of our customers do not want to provide an internet connection of any kind (not even VPN) to their production servers. Instead, they're more comfortable with a modem that they can turn on when we need to service. How well does a modem work over an average-quality VOIP connection? Does it?

  22. Re:Dorms on Tips For Incoming 2002 Freshmen · · Score: 1

This is a great suggestion, from the standpoint that college is a life experience, not just a bunch of classes. Here are some things that helped me: - Set a schedule, and keep it. Allocate enough time to "let down" after classes, and don't short your sleep time. - If you can, own and park a car - any junker, anything at all. Freedom to get out of town for a few hours is huge. - Don't buy the entire book list for every class unless you are sure the prof will use them; many are only touched on, if used at all. - Get involved in an intramural sport, or something. Anything. - Go on road trips. - Be yourself.
