there are accounts of the Buddha Siddhartha Gautama appearing in multiple places at the same time. To me, that's magic.
To paraphrase, "Any sufficiently advanced manipulation of the illusion that passes for Reality is indistinguishable from magic.";-) I suppose this could be a local application of the Many Worlds theory of quantum physics.
(Much of the following comes from The Shambala Dictionary of Buddhism and Zen).
Mahayana Buddhism...contains a diversity of mystical, magical beliefs
Mystical, perhaps, but I wouldn't call them magical beliefs. Theravada (the only surviving school of the Hinayana, or "Lesser Vehicle" branch of Buddhism), emphasizes the liberation of the individual. The ideal figure of Theravada is the arhat, a person who has achieved true enlightenment through his own efforts and whose existence will be extinguished following this life, i.e., no more reincarnations.
Mahayana buddhists, in contrast, seek to attain enlightenment for the sake of the welfare of all beings. Their ideal figure is the bodhisattva, a person who has achieved perfect wisdom but renounces complete entry into nirvana until all beings are enlightened. Some of these bodhisattvas are considered to be "transcendent beings" who appear in various forms to lead others to wisdom. That's pretty mystical, but no supernatural powers (loaves and fishes, anyone?) are attributed to bodhisattvas.
Now Tibetan buddhists, they have magic and deities out the wazoo. A truly interesting and baroque variant.
the original post...glossed over the diversity of beliefs regarding the Buddha and the mystical nature, including worship, contained in many of them.
Guilty as charged. I was trying to address the original generalization, but fell short. I'm most familiar with Zen buddhism, which definitely does not worship the Buddha. It's not even a religion, really.
The clearest explanation of the core concepts of Buddhism I've run across is What the Buddha Taught by Walpola Rahula.
No worship of gods and deities indeed, but worship of budda.
Not worship, but reverence. The Buddha is not considered a deity like Christ, or someone with a direct line to God like Mohammed, but rather a regular guy who thought real hard about What It's All About and came up with an interesting insight, for which his followers are grateful.
I can say unequivocally that even if the next release of Windows set your chair on fire every time you booted it, it would probably still remain the corporate standard for years to come.
Thanks for posting that. Best laugh I've had all week.
does the stress just get shifted or does this mouse actually help you overcome the stress involved with RSI
In my case, the pain was caused by overpronation of the forearm. The vertical mouse completely eliminated it. Try this: keep your upper arm at your side and raise your right forearm as though you were going to shake hands, e.g., palm to the left, thumb on top. Now rotate your forearm so the palm faces downward, like when you hold a mouse. Feel the tension along the top of your forearm? That's what a vertical mouse alleviates.
As someone else pointed out, it shifts the burden to your upper arm, resulting in a slight loss of fine control of the mouse, but practice (and adjusting the mouse control panel) can overcome this. I never experienced any upper arm pain while using the vertical mouse.
is RSS actually cured by changing the position of the hand
Since it removes the "Stress" part of Repetitive Stress Injury, it prevents further damage. Probably won't cure anything, though.
I was developing problems in my forearm, so I tried the Anir Vertical Mouse. Made a huge difference. After using it for a few years, I can handle a normal mouse again without discomfort. Hey, maybe these things do cure RSI...
Fred figures greatly in the little-known microphone work of the great physicist Stephen Hawking. I particularly recommend the searing F*ck Tha Creationists. (warning for the bandwidth-challenged: 2.2MB MP3 file).
They are, for tabular data. Using them simply for positioning is frowned upon. Having said that, CSS makes it difficult to do some things that tables can do easily (columnar layout), which is why many people still use very simple tables for basic layout, without going to the extremes of spacer gifs, multiply-nested tables, etc.
A diamond ring has the inherent functionality of being able to score glass. With a little practice, she can become adept at permanent warchalking on the windows of businesses with poor wi-fi security.
Apple later included Microphones in their systems and Apple Recording sued apple. I forget the outcome
The most visible (audible?) outcome was that Apple named one of its system sounds "Sosumi". From http://www.spies.com/~greg/resume.html (please don't slashdot the guy's page, relevant portion quoted here):
I helped name the Sosumi sound in System 7. It was called Xylophone, but Apple's lawyers didn't like that name in light of the Apple Records lawsuit. Too music-y, they said, as they demanded the name be changed. I looked one of Apple's lawyers dead in the eye and explained that Sosumi was a Japanese word for beautiful flower.)
Windows XP is the newest Windows built on the NT core, where as Mac OS X is the newest built on the darwin core
Okay, so how many versions of NT have there been? It got up to at least 4 before MS changed the name to 2000. So say XP is version 6 or so of Windows. OS X 10.x (yeah, it's a silly naming scheme) is the first release of this OS. The FreeBSD core has been around for ages, but the UI is in its infancy, and I'm willing to trade polish for stability in the short term. Despite the massive UI change from 9 to X, I haven't lost any significant functionality.
It's the new dialog boxes that drive most OS9'ers crazy.
I hated OS 9 dialog boxes. Used a third-party enhancement called "Action Files" that provided much more functionality, chiefly the ability to click on an open folder in the Finder and have the open/save dialog jump to it. OS X's dialog boxes are better than OS 9's, but there's lots of room for improvement.
given that WinXP is about as crappy as OS X is, IMO
Keep in mind that this is release 1 of OS X, and release, well, at least 9 of Windows. I have no doubt that over the next few years OS X will come to display the same polish that the previous MacOS had. I'm in this for the long haul.
I do often find myself reaching for Cmd-N to make a new folder
probably will stay with XP....Incidently this guys can't figure out os x.
Without fail, the biggest whiners about OS X are those with the most Mac experience (hell, I used to be one of them). The biggest complaint seems to be "The key commands are different." I can't figure out why muscle memory is more important to these folks than rock-solid stability.
Doesn't seem to break the third-party utils I use (FruitMenu and WindowShade X and LaunchBar). Also doesn't restore my iBook 500 to pre-10.1.5 performance levels, but I need an excuse to get an AlBook anyway...

Yeah, I actually had to create my company letterhead when they asked me to do this (can you tell I don't communicate much by snail mail?).
What's the point of the notary seal (embossed) when I'm going to fax it?
The notary also signs it, but faxed signatures are being derided elsewhere in this thread...
Can't wait for the new tricks spammers will use to disable anti-spam programs.
Wait no more. I got a spam today that purported to be an apology for how the sender got my address, something like "so sorry, but these stupid porn sites like [link] must have sent me a virus. I can't believe my kids are visiting sites like [another link] even though I never go to sites like [yet another link], blah blah blah."
I have to admire the creativity of spammers even as I wish for Bad Things to happen to them.

I got a fortune cookie that says, "A smile is your personal welcome mat."
My favorite fortune cookie ever said "Alas! The onion you are eating is someone else's water lily."

I tried to read the article
That's just an informational notice. The page contains a link that allows you to view the site anyway. No irony here.
ESPN does the same thing, and provides a "lite" version of the site for standards-impaired browsers. I hope this hastens the demise of NN4.
As usual, CodeBitch has something interesting to say about standards in general and ESPN in particular.

sudo diskutil repairpermissions / in console
I tried that on two of my machines and it quit partway through with errors on both. Running the GUI Disk Utility worked fine, though. Odd.
