if you bought Dell and Apple a decade ago, you did much better with your Dell stock compared to Apple.
On the day of the pronouncement--eight years ago--you could have bought DELL at $12.34 or AAPL at $5.49 (both adjusted for splits). Today AAPL is trading for $60 and DELL is trading for $30. You do the math.
A few of the Flash ads on Slashdot have a habit of making my CPU usage jump to 100%
I didn't know Slashdot has Flash ads because PithHelmet blocks them even without specifically disabling plugins. I guess you have a good reason for not using it, though.
What if I'm using Safari with a popup blocker? What if reloading without blocking returns the exact same page? Why can't you can't provide a plugin-free experience like Google Video? Wankers.
Good thing I've already seen the movie and don't need enticing.
It's a minor pain in the butt to get to your account, but definitely more secure.
It's definitely more annoying, but all it seems to do is make it harder to intercept the PIN over the wire, something that's already difficult with a properly encrypted link. It's not particularly resistant to phishing, as the sibling post by Amazing Fish Boy demonstrates.
Schneier points out that credit card companies, who are responsible for fraud costs above $50, have become extremely adept at detecting fraudulent transactions even though credit card users don't jump through hoops to authenticate themselves online. Banks will become just as effective once they have to bear the cost and aggravation of fraud.
My father flew planes for the Strategic Air Command (the branch of the US Air Force that deploys bombers and missles). I grew up reading the SAC motto posted at the entrance to most of their bases: "Peace Is Our Profession".
Someone should invent a rain-sensor, so cars can close their own windows if it starts to sprinkle.
Been done, actually. We visited Paris about a month ago and rented a car to drive to Normandy. It began raining on the way, and much to my surprise (and geeky delight) the windshield wipers came on automatically.
The sensor resolution was good enough to turn on at a light sprinkle, and the wipers adjusted their speed when conditions changed, e.g., speeding up when driving through the heavy spray of a large vehicle.
This wasn't a luxury rental, it was your basic minivan. I can't help wondering why this tech isn't on cars in the U.S. My wife teases me that the wipers were the highlight of my trip to France...
These days adolescence seems to last until about 35, with all the juvenile behavior that goes with it.
Arrrgh! I was hoping my 28-year-old son would get it together long before that. He's a great guy, respects his parents, has a job, blah blah blah, but some of his attitudes and behaviors demonstrate arrested development, and I worry that it's having a negative impact on his life.
You're just talking out of your hat, right? You don't have any studies that prove this? Right? Right??! <sob>
remember when microsoft dropped office for the mac.
Sure don't. You must be thinking of Internet Explorer, abandoned years ago at version 5. Office is still supported on the Mac.
Lord", right. Thanks.
AD=After Death - that would be 33 years after Christ's death.
A.D. is Anno Domini, Latin for "Year of Birth".

No, that was Riding in Cars With Boys.
There's actually a modern reinterpretation of the Cinderella story that has some hilariously modern female roles.
It was called Ever After. A Drew Barrymore movie that didn't suck.

Google Video...uses Macromedia Flash.
Yeah, I'm an idiot. I'll be quiet now.

Dammit, I actually previewed the damn comment. Honest!

Bruce Sterling has been thinking about this stuff for some time now.

Probably would have sounded even better in Latin.
At the manufacturing plant where I used to work we referred to a BFH as a Fine Adjustment Tool.
Having been to Singapore many times, it is a VERY "tight" country. If you break the rules, the punishment is quite severe.
Back in 1993 William Gibson wrote an interesting piece on Singapore for Wired magazine: Disneyland With The Death Penalty
Cue the smarm with a link to some clever hacker's rotary cell phone.
Okay.
we've got a dumbed-down educational system that would make Harrison Bergeron cringe
Excellent point, and I'm sure you meant Diana Moon Glampers, the Handicapper General. Harrison was the dancer.
(Those of you who don't get the allusion should read the extremely short story by Kurt Vonnegut.)
it's shaped vaguely like a Fender Stratocaster body with a glass platter.
More like a Telecaster, actually...

only elitist "otaco"s would say otherwise.
Sounds like something you'd get at a Mexican restaurant in Ireland. Perhaps you meant otaku?
Now you of gone offended him you insensiti clod!
To be precise: "Now you of done gone and offended him you insensitive clod!"
Nooo, you need MONSTER CABLES for the best quality!
Pfft. Monster Cables are useless--useless, I say--if you don't have a US$1500 power cord:
Tweak the power supply all you want, but it's pointless without one of those.DVForge CEO Jack Campbell has a long, sordid history of dealing in bad faith with the Mac community and being... casual with the truth.
He's also the jerk that offered a prize for writing a Mac virus. My heart bleeds for him...
Not technical, but geeky: the linguist's bumper sticker that says "Eschew Obfuscation."
