I think Linux could be more successful if computer vendors bundled complete Linux solutions w/ their systems. Something like say a laptop or netbook preloaded w/ Linux, along w/ things like printer, wi-fi and so on, working right out of the box.
Take a look at System 76 they ship a complete system with Linux installed. All the drivers (including sound) are already configured and working. I have two of their systems at home and have been really pleased. I tend to agree that for the average user a Linux desktop may never be suitable but, If you just need a browser or are a developer looking for a light weight operating system to use then it is a good buy.
Where are my mod points when I need them. +1 Correct.
I think I would be great if somebody put 50 million into making a Linux desktop that was competitive with MS and Apple. And it would take that much money. Now why would someone put 50 million dollars into a project that had no chance of making money because it was FOSS. I understand and admire the motivation of the FOSS movement but, motivated, skilled programmers will not work for no money. Another type of licensing or pricing is needed. The base problem with all of this is that the copy is free. We understand that Ford has to charge us for the car because factory cost, energy, labor and materials go into every copy. The first copy of a software product costs something the second is virtually free. We don't feel that we should pay for the copy. I don't necessarily have a solution but, the problem is clear. Developers need (because we like to eat and live) to be paid for development. No one, not even the above mentioned Mother Teresa do their job without some kind of compensation. Even RMS get paid for his work. Of course his work is talking about how I shouldn't get paid for mine. But, you see what I mean. Everybody gets compensation for their work.
Controlling our genetics is one thing but, trying to make us vegetarian, meek, small and docile is just creepy and silly. If you were going to manipulate our genes why not go for Gigantic, Strong, Arrogant, Meat Eating, World Beaters. Oh guess it has been done. Still, don't want my kids to be a bunch of Hobbits no matter how good the books were.
Also, have you ever given up salt for an extended amount of time? You'll be amazed how much it seems like candy after the first time you try it again ( was off salt for a 3 month personal test
You cannot give up salt. You will die with no salt in your diet. Yes that is correct you will die if you don't eat enough salt. While too much salt can be detrimental, this crazy idea that salt is bad for you is just that "Crazy". I'm sure it tasted like candy because your body needed that salt. Salt helps maintain the fluid in our blood cells and is used to transmit information in our nerves and muscles. It is also used in the uptake of certain nutrients from our small intestines. Eat your salt.
Used to be cool and nice. But now with virtualization there are just rack after rack full of blades in the Server Room. You can't find enough Dwarfs to name them all. We used the Beatles long ago when the bank I worked at only had 4 giant HP-UX servers. But, those days feel long ago.
Thank you, for bringing some perspective on the issues that is realistic.
I'm sure there is not a real farmer or rancher participating in this discussion. If there where you might learn that they care very much about their water use. They care very much about the sustainability of their land. Since the thirties agricultural production in America has become more efficient and productive than anytime in history. It takes less water now to generate a bushel of wheat than ever before. I strikes me as insane that a bunch of well fed computer programmers are going to go on about how the agriculture industry in America sucks. We deliver low cost nutritional food to the tables of America. Maybe a couple of you should invest in some land at $2,500 an acre, purchase farm equipment, seed etc and grow some of your own food. You would learn that all the academic talk of growing food with less water is a damn hard thing to do. That the average farmer can balance the inputs and outputs of modern farming and create the great bounty of surplus food in this country while making a small profit is one of the great scientific achievements of this century. Oh and the reason we all don't die of malnutrition.
I know that it is against/. policy to provide and answer that entails spending money but the solution to your problem is here: http://www.3lm.com/product.html
To bad they will want to charge you for the product.
T-Mobile will let you run an unlocked phone. As long as it takes a SIM card you just put yours in and you are on the T-Mobile network. I have used them for a long time and always used unlocked phones. I've even had their customer service help me with setting up a modem on a phone they didn't support. They don't give any discount for not buying one of their phones but, you don't have to extend your plan etc. My new phone is a stock Samsung Galaxy 3G. It tethers, attaches to my WIFI, mail, maps, WIFI calling; all of it with no problems. Hope that helps.
Be ready for your windows update Tuesday of next week.
A new update for you T-Mobile Android users will be out tomorrow
There is a rumor that Ubuntu will have an update ready on Thursday
The real problem with these protests is that no solution is proposed. I have a suggestion that the protesters and the tea party can get behind that might actually have some effect.
I propose a constitutional amendment that is simple and short:
1) Corporations are not people and do not have the rights and privileges provided by the constitution for citizens of the United State. All rights and privileges of corporations are dependent on law explicitly regulating corporate entities.
2) Corporations are explicitly denied the right of free speech. Corporate entities may only engage in speech related to the products or services offered by the corporation. Political speech is the sole right of individuals.
3) Individuals may group together to create entities for the purpose voicing political opinion and political lobbying. These entities must be funded solely by individuals with all contributions being in the public record. These political entities are strictly prohibited from taking part in any other type of activity.
It is a start. I guess you could never get it through but it would spark the right kind of public debate.
Except a giant corporate entity controls almost all chicken farming (Tyson) and if you don't play by there rules you cannot make a living chicken farming in America.
I was there and India did indeed make a choice. After independence the government decided that because of the LARGE population of people living in poverty (again an Indian problem born of the caste system not colonial occupation) they would build a system of 0% unemployment. This means that the government must generate or force industry to generate a lot of low end jobs. They end up with jobs like "blue tile cleaner and white tile cleaner". Two different jobs for the same bunch of tiles (I've seen it with my own eyes). The building I worked in must have had 40 security guards per floor. They have made a choice to generate a lot of jobs not increase income per job. This is a very different mindset than the western industrial mindset. Here in America we want to eliminate all the low wage jobs in exchange for a few high paying jobs.
The use of the word "colonial" is what you are protesting but, the original poster is correct. They chose to a "colonial" style economy. If they hadn't they would have 50% unemployment and a revolution on their hands. We in the west make the mistake of seeing India as an emerging western style economy. The are not. They are an emerging Indian style economy.
And that gives the police the right to pepper spray them. The constitution does not limit freedom of speech to those with a clear message and clear demands that are not angry. It gives everyone the right to speech. The brutality of police is not justified or legal.
This is so much horse hockey. I’m a 44 year old software architect and have no trouble make a 6 figure salary. As a consultant I change the company I’m working for regularly and don’t see any age bias. What I do see is a work environment that many over 40 workers do not like.
1) It is a learning business. The day you are not willing to learn the newest technology or language you are going to lose your job. Many over 40 workers get complacent and stop learning.
2) You must earn your salary. You can’t work as a programmer and expect 10% raises every year if you are not adding value. If you have been promoted to senior developer because you’ve been there that long but, can’t really do the job you are likely to be laid off.
3) Most new developers are crap. They might know the language but, they don’t have real world experience building applications that meet requirements, scale, are well documented and engineered for change. Older developers that have learned the hard lessons and can demonstrate that experience are well compensated.
I’ve seen lots of people young and old fired from this business. Mostly because for some reason people believe that just anybody can pick up a book and be a developer in 21 days. If you aren’t adding value commiserate with your salary you should not be making your salary and that is true for the young and old in every job.
Software development is both an art and science. It is creative but exacting. The processes that are put in place around development are there to make sure the developers generate a bug free artifact that delivers on the requirements.
It is not process that removes creativity or productivity from developers. Metrics and processes can be used to level up developers from mediocre to good to great. Developers need to be able to see in the metrics and review what is “wrong” with their code and what they can do to improve it. This post is really about Management and Leadership not software development processes. Any process from just go do it to Agile Extreme Programming can be used to generate good code or bad.
The real culprit is a lack of understanding on both sides of the aisle. A certain type of developer think they are above the process. Their “creativity” is so important that they lose sight of the fact that they are being paid to deliver a product that meets a set of requirements and quality specs. On the other side of the coin are project managers, business analysts and corporate managers that don’t understand how software development works or even what a good set of requirements are. Their ignorance leads them to over process the development cycle. The development becomes about process instead of the process being about development.
When diva developers and poor management come together you can bet that the project will fail.
You are right being a geek is does not necessitate liking everything that you are told to like by the "geek" community any more than being gay means you have to have a lisp. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and yours is as valid as anyones. Except of course that Starship Troopers is a classic and wonderful book turned into a vapid and stupid movie. There I said it.
In point of fact. All religions all cults. All religions are in fact as odd, strange, mystical and perverse as Scientology. The only reason we split the two into separate groups is that "cults" are new and obviously a scam. Religions are old and have history to make them real. If I told you there was an all powerful otter who lived in the sky and that the otter would send you to the bottom of the ocean where you would writhe in terrible agony for eternity if you didn't love and obey the all powerful otter, you would laugh at me. Just exchange "god" for "otter" and "hell" for "bottom of the ocean" and you have Christianity. If you believed in the otter you would be part of a cult. If you believe in god you are part of a tax free religion.
What? Sunlight has an effectively unlimited high end. You don't need "nuclear reactions" to make things hot. Existing solar furnaces can bring salts to temperatures of 6,300F and that is hot indeed. Look up solar furnace in the all knowing wikipedia.
You either have never used OO correctly or don't know what you are talking about. Copy and Paste to reuse code is the worst possible idea. You simply spread maintenance work and bugs through out your code base. Good OO lowers line count, maintenance time/cost and bugs. Bad OO like bad anything can be bloated and the ruination of a project. Modern IDEs and documentation tools allow you to find object and discover methods quickly and as you code. (Think CTRL-SPACE). Large systems with many developers cannot be built in the simple way you suggest. Some larger form of design and control is needed. It does not "need" to be OO but, OO can provide the necessary structure.
