    I would've liked to see it done with triangles... complex polygons just feels a bit like cheating. Not that it isn't super cool.

    The user can write to ~/Applications, but hardly any applications are ever stored there, especially iTunes, Safari, iPhoto, and the bundled Mac OSX Applications. They are all stored under the root in /Applications, and OS X most assuredly WILL ask you for an administrator password before modifying anything there.

    Sorry, but no. /Applications, and all the files inside, are group writable by the admin group. The first user account is in the admin group.

    OS X (and other BSD based OS) and Linux are based on different design principles and mostly immune to viruses.

    OSX might be immune to worms, it is *not* immune to viruses.

    Here is how OSX is wide open to viruses: I put out a shareware app that does something useful on the mac. When you download and run the program, it first infects a random app in your applications folder, like iTunes, then does whatever it was supposed to do. When you next run iTunes, it too infects a random app in your applications folder, and so forth. Soon, all of your applications are infected, and you don't even know about it.

    This is possible because the default user can write to the applications folder without needing a password. Thus any application you run on OSX can silently modify iTunes, Safari, iPhoto, whatever.

    I don't quite understand it, but I was under the impression that he was asking for a non existant sub.domain.com, and then blasting "I am in charge of .domain.com".

    But that doesn't seem to make sense to me since the ISP would've already cached the DNS for .domain.com

    Passengers generally know it is in their interest not to distract the driver. The person on the other end of the phone conversation is not at risk so they talk about anything at all.

    Basically all of these "compared to passengers" arguments are null and void when it comes to children in the backseat. Should we ban driving with children in the car? They won't help with directions or know not to distract the driver.

    We're talking about people that say PC when they mean "Windows". It has nothing to do with Macs being x86 or PPC.

    Raising limits adds convenience at the cost of higher rates of accidents and deaths.

    Except that's not true. When the limits were raised from 65 to 75, the accident rate dropped.

    no, because the hacked client can do the same thing. The server hashes a random part of the file, and then tells the client to hash that same part.

    That's not caused by slowness on your computer.. that's caused by a request to google which hasn't completed yet.

    IOW, your network is what's causing that error, not the speed of your computer.

    Well, the map-reduce style database is still in its infancy.

    Google and Amazon both use MapReduce databases for the majority of what they do.

    But for me, I basically would have a choice of CouchDB (which is still very beta) or Hadoop (has some crazy cluster requirements). I imagine in a few years, my choices will be wider.

    Only if you're running it locally. Ever try to debug a C/C++ CGI program? That's what nightmares are made of.

    A "real" language has been classically defined to mean "a language which can compile itself." Perl, Python, and Ruby cannot do that (to my knowledge). Most languages used by web developers are interpretive languages, which fail this test.

    Um, since all of those languages have "eval", they most definitely can compile themselves.

    I could be wrong, but I'd bet your probably missing some veggies in your diet, maybe some protein.

    Your brain is powered entirely by glucose which of course comes from carbohydrates. Eat more bread.

    When I got my 5th Gen iPod (only reason I got it was because it was the biggest storage on the market at the time) I never even installed iTunes.

    Yeah, but that's not possible with the 6th Gen iPods... that's what this article is about. You *must* use iTunes to add music to 6th Gen iPods.

    Hahah.. um, this article is specifically about Apple preventing applications like gtkpod from working on 6th gen iPods.

    Buy a new ipod and you will NOT be able to use it under Ubuntu.
