So as long as Psystar is only giving away unadulterated copies of OS X they are fine, but as soon as they install, modify and provide backup/restore copies, they run afoul of copyright.
So you're saying that Apple users can't sell their macs without erasing the OS first?
If they shipped a computer + an unopened box containing MacOS X, that would be enticing you to install MacOS X without a valid license.
That argument is as evil as when MS tried to prevent Dell from selling computers without an OS because it would just entice people to install a pirated copy of Windows.
ANd what should Apple have done? Pulled the app from the store? Why exactly? If they did that, you would be whining here how "Apple is abusing their power by dictating to developers what apps tey can and can not sell!".
They did pull the app.. and you'll notice he's not whining about it.
Like most these days it has a black box driving the ponies inside the shiny motor thing, it also manages a myriad of other crap from timing through to the seat warming my arse along cold mountain rides.
Legislators are trying to fix this. Every year they introduce a right-to-repair bill (most recent one was HR 2694). This bill would force car makers to reveal condition codes and other proprietary "black box" data so that 3rd parties can use it.
People are doing similar stuff today in the cellphone world.
Alltel's firmware is the "loosest" of all the carriers. So the people with Verizon who want to do bluetooth DUN on their HTC phones, are using pieces from Alltel's firmware to do it.
The list price (since I quoted list for OS X) of Vista Ultimate is $340. You can pay less, assuming you are OK with getting a hobbled version of Windows. The $130 list price of OS X is completely full-featured.
Give me a break!
The features gained by going with Ultimate instead of Home Premium *aren't* included in your "full-featured" OSX.
Ultimate comes with a license that allows for multiple VM installations. Apple forbids VM installations outright.
Ultimate comes with a full version of Remote Desktop that allows unlimited connections. Apple charges an extra $499.
So if you want to compare Ultimate to OSX, you'd better add $499 to the price of OSX.
DRM causes issues in legit copies a LOT. I have a lot of games that worked when I bought them but don't work on my new hardware.
My solution wasn't to pirate... my solution was to stop buying PC games altogether. I have no hidden agenda when I say DRM prevents me from buying software.
I now have dozens of 360 and Wii games.. all paid for. I'm never going back to PC gaming.
The problem is that many exempt employees don't know what their rights are.
Subject to certain exceptions set forth in the regulations, in order to be considered "salaried", employees must receive their full salary for any workweek in which they perform any work without regard to the number of days or hours worked
The exemptions are too long to quote here, but the exemptions all cover missing entire days.
DVD was introduced, what, in 1995? I got mine in 1999, and I was the first person I knew who got DVD - four years after its introduction
First DVD player in the US wasn't till 1997. DVD sales surpassed VHS sales in 2001. Bluray first hit the US in 2006. You think that in 2010 bluray sales will pass dvd sales?
While it's true the vast majority of HDTV sets in people's homes today are 720, it's not true in the store. Most of the HDTV sets on sale today are 1080P. It's getting harder and harder to find a 720P TV.
Sun has a track record of working closely with Free Software projects for quite a few years now.
Only recently. Anyone who has ever used solaris on a sparc will laugh at that statement. Sun used to be every bit as anti-opensource (and anti-GNU in particular) as MS is.
It was only after Sun started losing market to Linux that they started embracing open source.
If he was still alive and having to defend himself in court, he'd probably plead temporary insanity. Insanity means without reason or utterly foolish.
Insanity isn't a medical definition, it's a legal one. Insanity means he doesn't know what he was doing was wrong. That's it. It's very hard to prove that you thought there was nothing wrong with killing your wife and child. Not that you thought it was the best way to deal with your problems, or your only option, but that there wasn't anything *wrong* with it.
Let's put it this way, the insanity plea has only been allowed in fewer than 1% of all cases. Of those, only 26% were successful, of those, 90% were previously diagnosed with a mental illness of some kind.
We do the math, and even if the judge allowed him to pursue an insanity defense, the odds of him being acquitted is 2.6%
I'm a Nintendo fanboy.. I own a virtual boy.. that says how much of a nintendo fanboy I am. But I'll happily slam nintendo for their missteps. How else will they learn?
The Wii needs better network support. The 360 is so easy, and being able to keep connected with the people on my friends list is awesome. The Wii's network support is practically non-existent. The Wii needs achievements. They're one of the most brilliant things MS ever did.
In Apple's app store, there's typically one app that does what you need. No choice.
Have you actually looked at the app store? There are 4 tip calculators, all of which are nearly identical. Two of them are actually made by the same guy.
According to a report from Quality Education Data, the Macintosh now accounts for 41% of the K-12 education market, up 5% from last year, and is the computer of choice for 55% of school purchases in 1996-97.
Only if they modified it. I can redistribute binaries of GPLed software without providing the source as long as I haven't modified it at all.

I always choose a racy question just so anyone trying to hack my account will get a laugh.
Like "What are you wearing?"

This means that as long as I get my work done, I can go home at noon every day if I wanted and they can't do anything about it.
So switch to console gaming. Every game is guaranteed to work on your system.

Apparently you haven't been paying attention. We Americans *are* getting rid of our SUVs. Dealers can't give them away.
They did that. Next?

You're believing arstechnica's data right now. If this were open source, arstechnica would point out exactly where the problem is.
The alpha channel is done as a separate mask plate. So there are mask plates for the shadow plate, specular plate, etc.
8K plates are typically 8192x4320
At 16 bits per channel, it's 71MB per channel.
That'd be 212MB for the color plate alone, not to mention the shadow, specular, and reflection plates.

Apple used DRM to lock down all new ipods to prevent rockbox from working on them.
You either loved him, or hated him... or thought he was OK.
It was a lot higher in the 90s even. In particular with Apple's focus on getting into schools.
Check out Apple's website from 1996:
That was before Jobs came back to Apple.
