Ok, given the number of web servers out there as reported by Netcraft, why aren't there 56% Linux breeches as against 31% MS.
Because Apache is incredibly well built. But look at the stuff that actually runs on apache. Running the most common blog/forum software is going to get you hacked.. it's practically guaranteed.
Having "the first guy to break OS X/Linux security" with a massive security hole on a massive scale would seem rather appealing on my resume.
The fact that there isn't any spyware on OSX tells me that hackers don't want notoriety anymore.. they want to make money.
Take a look at the permissions of all your apps inside/Applications. They are all writable by the default user. Writing a classic attach-to-executable virus would be trivial for OSX. No one has done it.
After fighting with Evolution and Thunderbird, I've given up. I just have gmail pop all my mail. Not only does this eliminate the hassle of checking my mail from multiple machines, but gmail actually handles meeting requests properly. (Evolution never seems to recognize the timezones of any meeting requests I get... so all the meetings were scheduled for the wrong time, and Evolution wouldn't even let me change them).
Yeah because you clearly bought that as an off the shelf PC and not a home built
It's an off-the-shelf HP. It was a clearance item at walmart. They don't seem to have any more semprons though.. now the cheapest HP at walmart.com is a dual core Athlon 64 for $549. Only has a gig of ram, but it does come with Home Premium.
Ummm, yeah, if you discount all the people who buy the entry-level sub-$500 PCs
I just bought a sub-$500 PC.. runs Vista just fine. It's an AMD Sempron 3500+, came with an Nvidia 6130, 2 gigs of ram, 200 gig harddrive, and a lightscribe DVD burner.
Seems you're either under-estimating what a $400-$500 PC comes with these days, or you're over-estimating the requirements of Vista.
The only one I'm aware of is that whole WinFS thing, with the filesystem being an ACID compliant database. I really liked that idea... but it was killed pretty quickly, and now I'm not even sure what makes WinFS different from NTFS.
With XP, there was a compelling reason for a lot of people to upgrade.
Not really. In fact, nearly every time MS comes out with a new OS, the reaction is always the same.
When XP came out, people flamed the "Fisher Price UI", were outraged over Activation, and generally told everyone they knew that they were going to stick with Win2k.
Today, pretty much everyone is going on about how horrible Vista is, and telling everyone how they're going to stick with XP. The same OS they wouldn't be caught dead running 6 years ago.
Last month we bought 2 desktops and a laptop.. they all came with Vista. It's the first time in nearly a decade that I'm running a valid copy of Windows, and we haven't had a single problem with it.
if every single person who ever went online were a thoroughly educated uber-geek and fully aware of all tracking techniques used, then no one or practically no one would ever allow any of it and the marketers would have to come up with a more reasonable way to make money.
I'm fully aware of the tracking techniques used.. and I don't delete my cookies. I'm an anonymous number to them.
I bet you go shopping in a ski mask too, because every store video tapes you.
First, it's not clipped, it's compressed. If you're getting CDs with clipped wave forms they're just poorly recorded, and I wouldn't expect any form of media from that recording engineer to come out any better than the CD.
Exactly my point. Search for Vlado Meller. He's a Sony master engineer who introduces obvious clipping. Square waves a-plenty.
He can't mix vinyl because of the limitations.. if he tried to press his master onto wax, it'd be white noise. That's why the LP versions of albums he worked on are mastered by someone completely different.
It's likely more marketting then tech since CD and well kept records sound exactly the same to me
Depends on what CD you're talking about. The Loudness War has adversely affected CD quality for a decade now. The LP version of the latest Chili Peppers album doesn't have anywhere near the amount of clipping that the CD version has. It has a higher dynamic range.. this isn't "feels warmer" this is "measurably different wave forms".

So you're saying the PSP is very reasonably sized compared to a device that came out 18 years ago?
Well, depends on your definition of DRM. Apple's Shake requires activation.. even the demo does.
Hehe, I did a search on my old posts and found these two gems.
this one from two years ago
And this one from last year

I have a feeling that has something to do with the fact that George Harrison and Roy Orbison are both dead.
True, but they do claim to "bust myths" and commonly declare things "impossible".
What irritates me is how often they use ballistics gel as an amalgam for human tissue. Even for electrical experiments.

Hell, they run slashdot. Slashdot itself took forever to upgrade its HTML, and the codebase is on CGI life support.

The most expensive iPod Photo was $449. The most expensive iPod ever was the first generation 10gig, at $499.
From the mouth of Jobs himself:
"Java's not worth building in. Nobody uses Java anymore. It's this big heavyweight ball and chain."
The iPhone will not run Java.
So what does that say about the huge about of shit Apple has been dishing regarding Vista?
Perhaps you could explain to us why you care so much that you have set up your browser to delete cookies when you close your browser?
They can make you login in order to do anything.. of course you'll complain about that even more.

Companies have site licenses. It doesn't matter at all what OS the machine came with.. IT will Ghost a copy of XP onto it.
I used to do that in OSX. Leave Software Update sitting at the "reboot" stage for weeks at a time. At least windows offers a "reboot later" option.
See, that's paranoia. You do know you're in the site's server logs anyway, right?
Using noscript to avoid being included in an aggregated traffic report is total over-reaction.
