Ruby on Rails is great, but it really needs some time to mature. There aren't any books on it.
Things are also slightly broken. Using ":scaffold" works but "script/generate scaffold" doesn't get the names right.
The whole pluralizing tables thingy is waay too confusing, and the method for turning them off doesn't work for half the scripts.. so you end up with singular controllers but pluralized models.. breaking everything.
Ruby on Rails will be great in 5 years. Right now it's waay to immature to be used for anything important.
The problem is when some "smart" developer decides to save space on his binary by simply not compiling in PowerPC support because "his userbase doesn't have that significant of a percentage of PowerPC users anymore".
Even worse is the opposite problem. The problem of the developer (I'm looking at you Quark!) not bothering to update their shit for another 5 years. Meaning companies are left scrounging for used macs because Apple no longer sells macs that support their software.
Of course, that isn't Apple's fault.. Quark is the problem (actually the problem is moron publishers who refuse to switch to inDesign)
I for one am looking forward to seeing what happens with the xMac. It always does the computing industry good for a little shakeup.
I could never survive without having that right mouse button on my laptop.
I couldn't. Try to use Maya without a second mouse button (oh that's right.. no one uses their macs to do anything but use Safari, iLife, and Photoshop).
The biggest thing though is not having a scrollwheel. And, no I'm not going to install sidetrack since it's buggy as shit and crashes OSX.
First test a G5 running Debian against an Opteron system running Debian; then test a G5 running Debian against a G5 running OS X. Hey presto, results that actually mean something.
These tests do mean something. Linux doesn't have much in the way of commercial support on an xserve.. so for many businesses it's going to come down to "Buy a dual opteron with linux" or "Buy an xserve with OSX".
I agree they should have tested linuxppc (since my own tests show that linuxppc smokes darwin in every way possible) but by no means are these tests useless since they compare the most commonly available *complete* solution.
In the case of Star Trek, the explorers really are just out to meet interesting new people and say hello to them, not to swipe land and riches.
That's probably why I hate Star Trek so much. Star Trek has always felt plastic and fake to me.. probably because it's missing all the things that make us human.
How much money does it cost to run a starship.. and you're telling me that the financiers don't want to see some sort of ROI?
Oh that's right, Star Trek got rid of money. Dumb!
In the real world, a good deal of actual girl gamers aren't bothered by such things just as men aren't bothered by the hulking warriors and shirtless fighters.
Give me a break. If there were a male version of DOA Beach volleyball (with sweaty dudes wearing euro-style swintrunks), most guys would avoid it like the plague. A bunch of girls bouncing around = normal, a bunch of guys = obviously homoerotic.
If a game looks like crap and people don't get to see any screenshots before release, they're not idiots. They'll realize that the game looks crappy so all they're getting to see is marketting materials and concept art
Katamari Damacy proves this a falacy. The game looks like crap.. but plays like a dream.
Coffee shops provide Wifi so you can relax with a cup of coffee in a comfortable atmosphere while still being able to get that little extra bit of work done
No. Coffee shops provide coffee so you can drink it. Everything else is ancillary.
So I've been looking for any of the hype- Penny Arcade mentioned a tech demo video that was shown and complained that they certainly never saw anything like that coming out of their playstations. I have not been able to find that video
It was the Ballroom scene from FF8. They showed it rendered "in real time".
I can't find the video.. it was never released online, only shown at E3.
Here are some photos someone took of that scene though:
The fact that those are large fans that aren't spinning at full speed. They keep the computer as cool as it needs to be while being much quieter than the 2-3 fan PCs with fans spinning their lil' hearts (motors?) out.
Do a quick google for "G5 overheat packaging".. if you don't remove the packing tape the G5 will overheat and crash. We're talking about a computer that runs so hot that if the case isn't sealed perfectly, it immediately overheats.

IBM Europe Workers Strike

Your opinion might change if you ever work 20 years at a company and actually become an executive.
The percent of money the average worker makes versus an executive has drastically shrunk in the last 20 years.
In 1980, the average CEO made 42 times the average salary of the regular workers at his company. In 2000, the average CEO made 419 times the average salary.
The pay gap between executive and regular workers has drastically gotten out of hand. We're at the point where nearly 40% of an entire company's payroll is going to one person.
Yeesh. Universal, as in "more than just video".
Maybe they should've just called it PSPdisc... since Sony isn't even going to put a UMD slot on the PS3.
Well.. I thought the case was fairly breath-taking...
did I say "convert to an integer"? No, it was PHP's idea to convert... but only sometimes.
You did it implicitly when you used "==". PHP will *always* convert both sides to the same type when you do ==.
PHP has the === and !== operators for what you're doing.
$a=0;
$b="hello";
$c="hello";
if ($a===$b) echo "never gets here";
if ($b===$c) echo "but these are equal";
Suppose A equals B, and also B equals C. Any reasonable person would expect that A equals C, right? Oh yeah?
Not in set theory.
"A dog is an animal"
"A cat is an animal"
"A dog is not a cat"
If I were to convert your code into C, I'd get:
if (atoi("spam")==0) printf("I am insane");
Gee... C's "==" operator must be broken!
You're the one trying to convert "spam" into an integer.. and then being suprised to get 0.

The plural of computer mouse is computer mouses.
It's only "mice" when you're talking about rodents.
Try using photoshop without a mouse.
I do it all the time at home. It's called a wacom tablet. What were you saying about proper tool and all?
No one who has ever actually used Objective C++ and Carbon would actually complain about it. That has to be the nicest toolkit out there, bar none.
Objective C/C++ makes me want to vomit. [The syntax is awful.] The entire language looks like it was designed to be interpretted with a modified cpp.
In fact, I think the original ObjC compiler was just a preprocessor that parsed the little macros and output C code.

ntohl/ntohs should only be used for network traffic. Not for reading files.
You should use a BIG_ENDIAN macro in configure.in instead.
The core of OS X is booting and running on commodity hardware NOW.
No it's not. Darwin *only* runs on Intel BX chipsets.

As mentioned, all the sailing in WW is what put me off.
Would you have prefered a "Loading..." screen? The sailing in WW was a trick to hide level loading.
I didn't mind the sailing.. it was peaceful. And it was much more interesting than "Please Wait...".

I disagree, because my girlfriend (29) and daughter (4) love the outlandish clothes women wear in games.
Karma be damned, but the fact that you've got a 4-year-old, are around 30, yet you are unmarried says a lot about your post.

They are weaker than the Borg by a ton, they are weaker than most Enertrpise ships which are made to explore.
Makes sense really. Look at history. The Spanish explorers versus the Aztec warriors..

The lesser/greater system originated from people who didn't understand upload/download and were trying to explain -- poorly -- to laymen.
How hard is it to understand? Do people have a hard time with the terms "give" versus "receive" as well?
Hey dude, I just received a present to you!
It would be funny if they discovered the appendix in fact housed the soul. "And all this time we thought it was relatively useless!"
Well shit.. that means I lost my soul when I was 18 because it had outgrown its container.
