They are only allowing Windows users to interoperate with their software. Mac users are left out, an attitude that seems a little short-sighted to me. Surely it wouldn't take that much effort to port their DRM to the Mac?
It's not the DRM, it's the actual Rhapsody software.
Look at it this way:
January 2001: Apple releases iTunes for the mac. October 2003: Apple releases iTunes for the PC.
It took Apple almost 3 years to port iTunes to the PC. Real has only owned Rhapsody for a year.
Goddamn double standards, these mac appologists are sickening.
Apple will license FairPlay to anyone. (They licensed it to Motorola.) But Real decided to skip the licensing and just reverse-engineer it.
No, Apple will NOT license FairPlay to any online music store. They licensed it to Motorola so phones can support it. But you can bet that Motorola's license prevents them from using FairPlay on their own content or to open a online music store.
It's easy to make your digital music store compatible with the iPod. Just sell un-DRMed AAC or MP3 files.
Well that's not feasable.. so what is going to happen is that *everyone* is going to switch to a DRM they can actually use (like MS's), and Apple will be relegated to niche player... AGAIN.
Lets have 15 different proprietary "standards" out there for music. That way if you buy a player from Apple, you buy your music from Apple.
That's the irony of this whole situation. The market will not stand for 15 different standards.
If Apple refuses to license FairPlay to any other online music store, then FairPlay is going to fall by the wayside and we'll all be using MS's DRM.. since MS will license that to anyone.
Now some Apple tech has to figure out that this is a Real AAC, not an Apple AAC
No! It *is* Apple AAC. That's what Harmony does, it converts from Real's DRM to FairPlay. The end result is identical to what you'd get off of iTMS, except it is higher bitrate.
But you'll note that they've closed down the forums, and if you go to the petition site, you can't view any of the comments or the names, only the signature count, even though most of the "signatures" are against the petition.
What? They were perfectly up front about this! They said that they were forced to take down the comments and names because Apple zealots were posting trash, porn, and obscenities.
WAKE UP! Virtually every major cable-TV player is getting into the game. 5 years from now I imagine you'll have a challenge trying to find a new standard cablebox that doesn't have TiVo-like features.
The *majority* of cable subscribers have a plan that doesn't require a cable box.
Because they have to *support* Real's format. When Real's shit breaks on iPod, the users will view it as Apple's fault.
No they don't. Harmony spits out a Fairplay DRMed AAC file. The only difference between that and what you purchase off of iTMS is that the one from Real is better quality.
The reason we capitalise 'Internet' is so that we can distinguish between it and mere 'internets'.
That's not necessary. No one refers to multi-router networks as "internets" anymore.
On a related note, I can say "this is the dumbest topic in the entire world!" and you know exactly *which* world I was talking about. No need to capitalize it to differentiate it from other, less important worlds.
What I find interesting about this list is that there is only one ps2 exclusive game on there. People would be better off buying a gamecube. That way they can play 7 out of the top 10, and many of those games would have better graphics.
What really is the big deal with people's obsession on multi button mice? Honestly, I don't get it.
You have no scroll wheel. How can you live without a scroll wheel?
For me, it's pretty damn obvious that the button I click with my primary finger is for primary options. I don't see how anyone could be confused by a 3 button mouse unless they're a retarded monkey.
A new from scratch implementation has started with four of the top Mono developers that are now locked up in Provo Utah working around the clock to delivery the new implementation of Windows.Forms
What are they doing then? I thought using wine was going to solve the p/invoke issue. Are you just going to ignore the p/invoke and just implement the exposed API?
The reason Apple's menu is stuck to the top, is to encourage muscle memory.
It's still a horrible design, and I'll tell you why. Because to the user, the *window* is the app. The menubar is *outside* the app. I forget it's even up there.. everyone does.
The fact that the menu is horribly designed is evident in *all* of Apple's programs. They all have an over-populated toolbar. Because the menubar is so forgetable and unused, the toolbar has become the surrogate menubar.
Now is the time for someone to post his newegg configuration with cheap ram, a 25 dollar case with generic PSU, and consumer level motherboard for a thousand dollars less than the G5......you can have it.
Actually, you can't use cheap ram or a generic PSU with the opterons. Most opteron (and amd64) motherboards are as picky as Apples when it comes to ram, and you *need* a 12V adaptor on your PSU.
That said, both the G5 and the opteron are way out of my price range. Myself, I own a AMD64. I upgraded my machine to a AMD64 2800 for $350. (That was CPU, 512mb RAM, and a new motherboard).
The point of the hack is to permit you to stream audio to an AE from a program other than iTunes.
I see 2 points to the hack.
1. Currently, Apple will not let you stream to more than one Airport Express. This should let you.
2. Currently, iTunes will either play locally, or play remotely. Not both. This should let you stream to an Airport Express while playing iTunes locally.
As it is, Airport Express is pretty useless. It's currently no better than a $20 pair of wireless speakers (in fact it's worse since a $20 pair of wireless speakers won't suck up all your bandwidth). This software should make it better.
Great that the client can verify data, but too many shoddy web programmers will use that as an excuse to not verify data on the web server too, as if only valid data can escape the client browser.
As opposed to too many shoddy web programmers who don't bother to verify data at all?
I can tell you that people accidentally hitting enter and submitting half a form happens way more often than someone trying to pass bad data purposefully. If I could prevent that from happening without having to code the damn form twice (once to ask for the data, the second time to present the user with the data they entered and highlight what went wrong) I'd be happy.
Without an effective touch and dual screen implementation, any ports will inevitably look better on the graphically more powerful PSP.
That's not true at all. If anything games on both systems will look the same. That's the way it works now. Many games on the xbox and gamecube look identical to the PS2 version because the developers like doing straight ports.
Finally, all they did was release the *names* of the games, how can anyone here possibly judge the games based on the title?
Just finished Reading 'Vernon God Little' by DBC Pierre last week and in that story there is a reality TV show on death row where the public get to vote every week on who gets executed next.
Sounds like Pierre is a bit of a Stephen King fan... *ahem*Running Man*ahem*

Damn good quality (almost DVD quality)
Actually, laser disc quality is *better* than DVD quality. There's no compression on a laser disc.
Requires Panther. What do you want to bet that the next version will require Tiger?
I'd like to see what this program requires in Panther that isn't available in Jaguar.
I'd rather pay $.99 a song and get to keep it rather than paying $.50 for a crippled song that comes from a company with a dodgy past.
/.
Why is this modded insightful? What you get from Real is *identical* to what you get from Apple! Except that Real offers a higher bitrate.
Sheesh. Rabid apple fanboyism is alive and well here on
I imagine Apple will get sued for anticompetitive behaviour.
Intentionally breaking compatibility with a competitor isn't a good thing. If Apple does this, they deserve to lose the market.
Because they have to *support* Real's format. When Real's shit breaks on iPod, the users will view it as Apple's fault.

We refer to it as the Internet.
That doesn't matter. We refer to it as the world, and the universe. We don't capitalize those either.
What I find interesting about this list is that there is only one ps2 exclusive game on there. People would be better off buying a gamecube. That way they can play 7 out of the top 10, and many of those games would have better graphics.

The price versus performance is tough to beat.
Oh yeah, and Marathon kicked the holy hell out of Doom and Doom II
Well, considering that Marathon came out a year after Doom, that's not saying much.
And System Shock kicked the holy hell out of Marathon, and it came out the same year.
