uhm, back up a second.. are you implying that Blackhawk Down was based on fictional events ? Thats what its sure sounds like, if not you seem to be making the suggestion the events were grossly exaggerated. Well Smiley Ben, why dont you send an email or two to the soldiers (yes they are available) that were involved in that political debacle. There were two interviews with the soldiers before the movie was made and the contents of the movie clearly reflect what they gave witness to.
And frankly I'm a little surprised when my service provider greeted me early one morning with this message. I run a small website that averages 3 hits day (more code red hits than real visitors.) The mail server takes in about 40-50 messages/day. Pop onto opennap every few days and download a few tunes. And have IRC running all the time.
I dont play quake, I dont run a porn site, I do share oggs on my website with friends but we're talking about 15-20 people that download on an infrequent basis.
So to sum it up, Well I dont know what these cable companies expect their users to do, maybe shut their machines off? I'm miffed and for the amount of money that I have to shell out for this "high speed" connection I'm about ready to go back to dialup.
I can see it now.. walking through the mall with my portable ogg player, collecting googlebytes while browsing the cd section at Harmony House.
It would work well if the software had a request list. Suppose I was interested in a certain genre of music, certain types of por^H^H^Hclipart, etc, the client could request to receive this data from anybody sharing in the vicinity.
It could work very well, if, enough people are using them. I imagine a school/college setting would be very conducive to a busy p2p wireless network such as this. As long as the mobile devices aren't moving at 60mph in opposing directions it would probably work very well.
But am I the only one that thinks the screenshots look like the hell. That isn't a UI, its a hackery of widgets tossed and turned until something popped out.
the Mac manual was published using a 1 point font, OTOH the beowulf manual is large, double spaced 36 point.

Final word and final comment, hithero you have had free reign to voice your opinion on this matter. I have arrived wielding a blood dripping Jon Katz voicebox remover.
Thou shalt not make any further comment!
For all the complaining about AOL that happens in this slashdot forum, it seems quite a few of you use their services.
Noscor, Oscar, toscar, whatever, schmoscar, its all irrelevant.
thank you thank you, now i remember.. truly one of history's worst films (not a popular opinion around obviously.) The:NG films were great but anything with Shatner was a complete fucking joke IMHO.
can someone explain to me what the writer of this story meant when they said "can transparent aluminium be far behind?" (i think he meant translucent) What does alumunium have to do with concrete ? Did i miss a joke ?
just a point i'd like to make, ignore me if you want but how am I to know (unless i read slashdot or a particular website,) that mail attachments with a fake.TXT.VBS extension are more than likely some sort of virus?
what do you mean drafting ? That would imply Apple's lawyers would need to put some thought into what they are writing.
Mr. Steve "The World Revolves around I" Jobs fires up Word with an evil grin on that smirky little face of his. Before template.DOC can open the screaming shards can be heard echoing deep below the surface. [global replace] NEXT-VICTIM : OEone.. the task is done but Mr. Dancing Paper clip will have the say in the matter...
I'd really like to see a High-School map + relevant skins.... I just the idea of sniping physics teachers from the 3rd story drama class. This might cause some angst in Jon Katz and his fat mouth but it would be a real joy for me:)
But if you want the best available recording of a classical performance go with the Telarc label (No I dont work for them.) http://www.telarc.com Their cd's are expensive but as far as quality and having compiled some of the best performances in Jazz and Classical, nobody comes close.
I dont think either of you quite get it, although the two of you might have no trouble listening to 128kbps streams, there are _millions_ still on dialup... both of those streams will work fine on a dialup link but if i had to choose the lesser of two evils I'd pick ogg anyday.
as for higher bit rates I suggest you play around a bit with it... _some_ have said nominal 128kbps ogg is better than 160K lame encodings...
To dethrone it you have to have demonstratable advantages that motivate people to adopt it, and honestly as of yet I haven't seen those advantages.
I think what you meant to say is that you haven't heard the audible benefits of using ogg. I have something in mind that might change your mind, its only one example but i think it will suffice. And keep in mind that the next release of the ogg encoder (RC4) will have even more improvements in the low bitrate range.
Try the following streams, one is ogg and the other mp3 , both broadcasting 32Kbps/mono.
mpg123 -b 64 -u a http://shoutcast.mediacast1.com:7005/32
If you believe the mp3 stream sounds better then I suggest you give a reputable otorhinolaryngologist in your area a visit... or talk to El Rusbo if that cooks your noodles.
Just let me know and I'll give him a call (great uncle of mine.) Thats all I've got to say, have a nice day :)
