Reminds me when I was in 8th grade and I threw my PowerBook 180 in my backpack one day. One of the books smashed against it and shattered the LCD. GRRRR....

Then this one time, I was coming home from a conference. All the gear was in a pile. Someone backed their SUV into it and smashed the headstock of my guitar. At least they paid to fix it.

The US is a lot more dangerous than Iraq.
Would you care to explain how? Iraq has a case of the Napolean Syndrom. They hate the US because it is so much bigger than they are. This time around, they have the great equalizer: terrorism. Don't be fooled by the diplomatic bullshit Iraq is spitting out right now. They know they are in trouble and they are doing damage control.
/me - highly educated Swedish citizen - working against the US.
So you need to show off your "education" to get credibility? Your argument doesn't stand on it's own? Yeah, education is good, but what you are saying is, "Believe me! I know what I'm talking about. Never mind that I don't use any evidence to back up my claims. I'm Educated (TM)!"
The Earth does not need a large military power declaring itself above international law.
Never mind that the US military has done great things in the Balkins. International law? Is there some sort of world government nobody told me about? I think you may be refering to the UN, which I find funny. The UN is America's bitch. Yeah, every third world dictator and people who think they will look better supporting the "little guy" may bitch and whine, but in the end, nothing happens unless the US agrees. In the cases where something does happen without the US, you get powerless things like the International Criminal Court. Without the US to enforce UN dictates, those dictates are just pieces of paper.

I'm getting tired of people demonizing the US. They seem to think that not being in the US gives them greater insight than us lowly Yanks. Never mind that most of what they say are cute little pieces of propaganda copied verbatim from somewhere.

I would love to see some of these digital pianos you speak of. I have played on just about every piano possible, from Steinway grands to no-name uprights from 100 years ago to the most elaborate digital pianos available. A good digital piano may have a better response than a cheap $700 dollar throwaway. But for the $2,500 you mention, you can get a decent upright with better response than any digital piano you can find for any price.

I bought a foldup keyboard and I am using it as a cheap laptop. I take all my notes on it and such. Not bad for $150+$70.....

It's also much smaller than my laptop. What is really cool is being able to read books, play games, or do e-mail on the run. Sure, a laptop could do it better, but it's harder to carry around and I can't really afford a decent laptop.

No, English isn't based on Latin.

England has been overrun so many times in the past, it has taken on words from many different languages. English orignally came from Saxon. When the Normans invaded England, they brought over their Norman French. So, it's basically Saxon with a massive Romance vocabulary. The syntax of the language is hardly Romance, however.

The 100 most common words are Saxon based though.

You can even see who conquered who in the language. For example, pork and hog. Pork is Old French. Hog is Anglo Saxon. The people who worked with the animals used one word that had a connotation of dirty, while the people who ate it used their own word for it that means it's nice, clean, and edible.

English, then is more closely related to modern German than Latin. Actually, Afrikaans is the closest modern relative to English.

I'm sorry my rant, calling English a Romance language is one pet peeves.

I'll agree that 25%-30% of the population are not high school students. Note that I said YOUTH in my original post. NOT high school students. It may have been unclear because I was a tad tired and my syntax was unclear. What I meant to say is that these are observations from a high school, but they are representative of youth and they are a big chunk of the population.

Also, it is not safe to assume that my friends are mostly geeks. Quite the opposite. And when their computers break down, they call me up. It gets quite annoying.

Also, my observations were not just restricted to my friends. People trade burned CDs in the hallways during passing period. I don't even know most of these people. It's not only my friends doing it.

It's not just youth that burn CDs illegally. I build computers for some extra money and the most common question I get is, "What do I need to burn CDs?" The average person who I build for is around 35-40.

  8. Re:It had to happen. on EMI Promises Downloadable Music · · Score: 2, Insightful

1% of the population copies enough music to fill an entire CD? You obviously haven't been to a high school lately. At my school, I'd say half the cds people own are illegally burned.

It's a high school, but youth compose a large enough chunk of the general population to push that figure to 25-30% by themselves.

Just because the music industry does stupid and outrageous things, that doesn't mean that you have to use wildly inaccurate numbers to justify your claims.

Amoung some people today, the Confederate flag symbolizes their belief in the 10th amendment, which is largely ignored today. I don't fly the Confederate flag, but I know many people who do.

A good example would be federal marjuana laws. Does the federal government have the power to pass such a law under article 1, section 8 of the constitution? Some people say yes under the commerce clause.

The federal government way back when reconized that it didn't have juristiction over such matters unless it was granted a new power. Say hello to the 18th amendment (Prohibition), which was obviously repealed.

Unless Congress has reserved that power through a constitutional amendment, the states have that power under the 10th amendment.

The modern use of the Confederate flag is usually a symbol of this opinion.

Contrary to popular belief, the Civil War was not fought solely to free the slaves. Get the facts straight. Anyway, Lincoln mainly freed the slaves as a political move. Reading some of his speeches that are routinely "forgotten," you can see this clearly.

BTW, Robert E. Lee thought slavery was reprehensible. He fought for the Confederates because of family ties and his strong beliefs about state rights.

Some people like to say that the Confederate flag solely represents slavery. Not exactly. It's all about states' rights. At that time, that included the right for the states to make their own decision on slavery.

Go to a Civil War reenactment one of these days. You will learn quite a bit.

Yeah, the Civil War basically ended slavery. Don't think, however, that it wouldn't have happened if the Confederats had won or tied the war. Just might have taken a bit longer....

    Peace out.

I disagree. The schools these days don't just shovel in the facts. I know, I'm a freshman in high school. We really don't need to learn anything, as long as we can make art about the subject. In my history class, our final project is to make something that looks like a WWII propaganda poster. Our notebooks are graded on their visual appearence, not their written content. Spanish is even worse. We are supposed to write a short story in Spanish, then make a short picture book about it, without the actual Spanish text. Keep in mind that I take all honors and AP classes. The only class I actually learned anything in was computer programming and geometry. Those classes hammered in the facts, and left it up to us to apply them.
