    > Even if HTML 5 were rigourously defined and backed up by proper compliance testing

For what it's worth, that's one of the most important goals of HTML5.

    > how long it will take for browsers to properly support it

That 10 year number in the article is actually more or less the current estimate from people like the spec editor for HTML5.

The funny thing is the uptake on mobile platforms will happen way faster, developers are not hampered by "but it also has to run on (fill in any IE version after 5.5)" requests. On PC level things will move more slowly which means probabla 5-10 years unless there is a revolution on the web developers side (which never will happen)

  2. Re:RIAs have common runtimes, browsers do not on HTML 5 Takes Aim At Flash and Silverlight · · Score: 1

Actually having developing RIA apps on open standards now for almost two years I must say the testing effort is not that bad, as soon as you can take IE and older browser versions out of the game.
Especially last year the run fpr 100% ACID3 compliants helped a lot.

The fixing effort across the latest browser engines (including opera 10) is less than 1% of the actual coding time which means all modern HTML5 capable browser engines (safari4, chrome, opera10, mozilla 3.5) if it is at all, normally it just runs!
Compare that to the problem of adding another 30% of coding time for the IE and you can see where things are heading. I am glad mobile devices for now are moving away from Microsoft software, and my hope is that Microsoft wont realize that the battle for the next generation of webapps will be on mobile devices for a long time, long enough so that they cannot stop the development towards html5 upfront with their Web malware!

Of course it is bullshit, if you talk directly to developers they even say, that 3d games are cheaper to produce than 2d (sounds funny but it really is like that) because the tooling already is that good!
One of the reasons why everyone makes 3d games only, and one of the reasons why most new releases are shooters, the engines simply were derived from shooters, and a shooter is the minimal effort you can do!

  6. Re:If they released a new generation this year... on Ubisoft CEO Says Next Gen Consoles Closer Than We Think · · Score: 1

PC gaming already is cheaper, you can get a totally new gaming capable rig for 500$, if you count that in most cases you just have to upgrade the graphic card for 99$, and that games are 20-30% cheaper on average, the case for consoles is just that you can play in the living room. But this case is closing also since if you have a hdmi enabled TV you just need a dvi to hdmi connector!

Well over here in Europe we had also the digital switch, but about 3-5 years ago. The converter box program also was in place. But as I see it you cannot switch off old technology without providing the people an upgrade path. And face it in the long run over here everyone is pretty happy with the switch, because they picture quality has improved, and you get more channels for free, and add to that that USB sticks for DTV cost almost nothing so that they become PC standard equipment!

  8. Re:Seriously, why should we care? on DTV Transition Mostly Smooth, Windows Media Center Problems · · Score: 1

DTV is the classic forced update of a technology that had worked just fine for decades.

They can talk all they like about picture quality (true, if you have a good signal), but the truth is they
are forcing the sale of a lot of new hardware, and are
making it easier for broadcasters to control what people do with the signals
they receive. It's all about control and money. Isn't everything?

    ...laura

Truth is, that you can get away for free with the cupons, which are financed by the sales of the now empty frequencies for other services. Truth is also that you can shove more channels into the spectrum which might save you a cable contract in the long run. Truth also is that the picture quality especially coming from the lousy US NTSC is way better.
Btw. we over here in europe had the switch about 5 years ago, I have never heard that much of complaining, we also had the cupon project. And no whining was there, and mostly people are pretty happy here that they had switched. Better picture quality, altough it was no such a big step from PAL which anyway was superior to NTSC, and the biggest plus more channels and cheap receiver usb sticks for their PCs.

So there is another coin to the switch!

The only safe bet so far is the PS3 and some high end players. But the PS3 has the problem of not really fitting into a rack except on the very top of it (one lessen all console manufacturers should learn, also build machines which can be put into a rack, sheesh)

They are competing... on a diferent market. If you are like me and those "casual" type games dont amuse you then Nintendo is no longer for you.

You've got to be kidding ... the DS has like 7 billion games available, covering pretty much every imaginable genre in great depth.

Sure there are vast quantities of "brain age" and "kanji master 10" type games, but there are vast quantities of every type of game on the DS....

Yes but the main problem with the DS as well is the overpresence of kids games on the store shelves, for every
adult game are 10 pony games and 20 disney movie tie ins. It seems that those games simply sell on the Nintendo consoles!

Stop sitting on quality games that have been released in Japan and release them elsewhere! I'm still waiting on fatal frame for the wii, and won't be buying another Nintendo game until I can purchase that! Tecmo hasn't had a problem releasing the other 3, and the sales have not been that bad in the states/Europe. UGH, I guess I'm still jaded that they're holding onto a shiny that I want, and am willing to part with money for.

Anyway, where are the good wii games anyway? I walk through the store and look at the Wii releases, and it feels like I'm in the kids section. Not that there is anything wrong with that, I guess. There is no reason not to offer them if that's what your consumers want, but why Nintendo (not Nintendo in Japan apparently) won't you release your high quality games over here? Will it ruin your family system image that for whatever reason you're doing your best to keep? It still makes no sense, there are already other more violent games out there!

The main issue is that there is an overpresence of kids games on the shelves while others clearly exist.
Okami, Tenchu Shadow Assassins, MadWorld, Godfather Blackhand Edition, Resi4, Metroid, Okami, Sam and Max, Strong Bad, Excite Truck, Excite Bugs, Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings, Red Steel, Disaster Day of Crisis, Endless Ocean, No More Heroes and many others I probably can dig up none of them I would call a kids game. The sony technology was very close to nintendo however, but there at least force feedback probably will be possible, but additional fine grained controls like nintendo has it on the wiimote also still are missing but could be added theoretically!

However Nintendo should be worried, because of the lack of HD support and their absymal performance in the games area 2008 (which slowly is changing this year).
