Sony is going nowhere, although a little bit of problems would help their attitude. First of all many Sony divisions operate positively, secondly, Sony has very good sellers with the PSP and the PS3 (the psp is selling well although not in DS regions it is a successful handheld, and deservedly so, the hardware is phantastic the only thing problematic is the attitude of sony on what the users can do with it - UMD aaargh), and even if the PS3 dies on the console front, it definitely helps Blue Ray to stay. We are talking about a huge international corporation here, which has many divisions, if the shit hits the fan, sony can close all its non profit units or closes them down and still be very huge. We talk about a company knee deep in media business, hardware, gaming, and lots of other assets. So sony has about the same chance to go the way of the dodo as microsoft does, although I would not mind if both companies went away!

Unfortunately not, those assholes have given illegally software patents left and right since the US started it, with about the same invention height, now they tried to legalize it because they already cashed in lots of money, and suddenly the entire thing backfired somewhat because the affected people became scared (while big corporations which represent somewhat 5% of the european IT market pushed for it)

The funny thing is, not even the patent officers want the thing, they drown in work, and currently are on strike, because they cannot keep any good invention check due to overload, while the top people of the EPA hand in hand with some politicians try to get even more patents in (every patent means tax money and money for the EPA) and push the bar down on invention height.

The EPA as it stands is a joke enough, and the people having given the order to grand software patents should be pushed into jail, but no... we have had an ongoing battle of trying to push the software patents in which still is not over, every time they try it by different means.
The first time it was the last issue on the list before the european parliament holidays, another time they tried to push it through via another bill affecting copyright etc...

    This is not over yet.

The main problem I had was while the graphics really were amazing, there was almost no game I even was mildly interested in. I counted 10-11 shooter 9 of them first person 2 third person, 2 wannabe rpgs which in fact were just third person fighters. Ratched and Clank was interesting though, MGS4 also (because I have not played the other parts) and then the most interesting thing was the puzzle game with the 80s style vector only graphics. Anyway Sony did it right this year, while Nintendo was somewhat of a letdown. But the sony lineup definitely is not a reason to shell out 900USD (that is the price in Europe) for a PS3!!! For that price I can get a decent gaming PC!

Same here some of the graphics were jawdropping, but, they showed 10 shooters
3 racing games, and 2 pseudo rpgs which just were remodeled shooters.

The interesting games were the next Metal Gear solid (which is a sneaker shooter so speaking of shooters....)
and the puzzle game which used 80s non filled vectors graphics.

After the presentation I thought, all the graphics were jawdropping but the console simply fails miserably on the gameplay side of things. Playstation sequel syndrome!

But kudos to Sony they really made a good presentation while Nintendos was not even mildly interesting.

Actually the DS uses some kind of SD card system, this was a lucky move on nintendos side, the time the ds will reach its final lifespan the modules probably will have more storage than an average UMD with less power drain. Currently 2 gig sd cards are 10-15 dollars retail so if a big vendor will start to use it the cards probably will be 1-3 dollars oem, so it already is possible to push out ds games with higher storage than one umd at almost the same price, the problem is there are no games on the ds which currently need this much of a storage, the screens are small so are the textures and real time speech and lots of video are traditionally not found to often on nintendo systems.

The PS3 did not do too well here, after the initial rush it is sitting like stones on the shelves, but after what Sony did here, releasing it half a year later with a 900$ pricetag and then even removing hardware emulation to cut production costs they didnt even deserve the initial rush in the UK and 2-3 other countries!

Dont count on it, the graphics dont really come from the Cell, the cell is good for many things, in the PS3 mainly for marketing.

The cell is a sluggish general purpose processor with only one core, and a handful of dsps attached to it. What you get is basically blazingly fast signal processing.
Excellent if you want to encode videos, or if you want to do some serious 2d imaging or physics calculation, but the number of polygons pushed are not getting higher that way. (A simple NVidia GPU is taking care of that)

in fact it makes things way harder for the people utilizing it because the cell definitely does not make multithreaded programming easier and normal program execution times are way worse, after all you cannot push a lot of algorithms which need parallel processing through a multitude of dsps!

The medium itself is a nice extension to dvds, but since they are not writable they serve only one purpose, customer lock in! Besides that 2 gig sd cards are now somewhat 10 dollars or so, so even if sony would bring out writable umd drives, they would be bound to fail, the next medium which will go the way of the dodo will be dvds (and their rw incarnations), 4 gig memory cards soon will be in the pricerange of a no brainer!

Actually stripped down to the bare core so that applets and other applet based solutions are less of a pain installwise. I personally think, 2MB is a good entry threshold which is bearable for most users. Applets are far superior to both flash and silverlight, the main reason for not being able to adopt them for now is the current problematic 15mb download for the java plugin. Applets in JDK6 have become really good as most java client related things. Opening the codebase really has helped a lot there.
