"there's already a high speed serial that can be used for ide drives. its called usb2 and also firewire."

usb2 and firewire are designed for external devices. SATA is better suited for internal motherboard connections. I am guessing that USB can never get as fast as you could with SATA simply because of the length of the conductors involved.

"...after all, he is the man"

which is maybe why no one tries to oppose him/compete with him? I dunno, I think maybe it's just because it's a waste of time making a new kernel, when you can just submit patches to Linus instead. You're forgetting that the Linux kernel is a community effort, and Linus is just the maintainer.

"This leaves other Linux kernels, and there are none"

Doesn't Alan Cox still have his Linux kernel? And isn't there another one by some other guy named Andrea?

I'm just glad that Alan Cox doesn't have to look after it anymore. Now he can spend his time writing drivers and hacking away at the kernel source. As well as helping Redhat. He did good work maintaining 2.4.x but his talents could have been better spent elsewhere. Let's wish Marcello the best of luck.

Yeah I guess you should have done that originally. Too bad...any storage solutions meant for normal people will always be too small for you!

This is an extremely inefficient method, and solar cells are extremely expensive for what you get out of them. Which is exactly why this whole crazy idea will never happen until the economics work out....and until there is a good use for a laser in a car. It's a waste to convert the energy to another form, every time you do that, you lose tremendous amounts of energy. The heat in the exhaust should be used directly (for heating) or the laser sould be used directly if possible, and economical. Somehow I don't think any useful laser can be powered from exhaust, and a battery would surely be needed anyways.

I think that the laser should be used in some way for a laser guidance system. Although this is more suited to rockets, and projectiles, but who knows. Based on what happened in 20th century, the future is almost impossible to predict.

  10. Re:Block Devices! on KDE 3.0 Release Plan Updated · · Score: 1
True, true. The user interface should be as dumbed down as possible. That's the beauty of Linux! All the configuration can be done from the command prompt.... I am fairly new to Linux, but I now use command prompt config for almost everything I need to do, unless I find a config Util that is really stable (for example, Guarddog firewall and Mandrake's printing config). But we need to have simple-to-understand stuff for the newbies out there who pick up Linux for the first time.

I agree that that the name "block devices" should be changed. Hmmm, what would be a good name? How about "My Computer"?

One more thing, is that "block devices" dialog used to access the drives, to configure them, or just to see the free space? It depends what the usage is. If it's just a config tool for admins, then I don't really see the problem with naming it that way.

I don't know if it's the windows style that I meant, but it just looks DIFFERENT. I don't know what it is, but it looks even more prettier. I am using KDE 2.2 out-of-the-box, so it's fairly plain looking. I think it was the new close, minimize, maximize buttons and the Start menu that caught my eye. Aren't these changes all due to the fact that Qt3 widgets were brought in?

Has everyone seen the new screeshots for KDE 3.0? It looks awesome. I like the new window style.

One thing that I think really needs to improve with KDE is the speed. It is still much slower than Winblows if you ask me. But it's free, and very customizable, so I don't mind the trade-off.
